Description

Nov. 21, 1933. I A. J. FILKINS 1,935,839
PORTABLE LOCOMOTIVE DRAFTING DEVICE Filed June 9. 1932 Patented Nov. 21, I933 PORTABLE LOCOMOTIVE DRAFTING DEVICE Arthur J. Filkins, Chicago, In.
Application June 9, 1932. Serial No. 616,252
teams. (01. 104-52) 7 My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in portable locomotive drafting devices as set forth in the following specification in conjunction with the showing of the preferred embodiment thereof in the drawing forming a part ofthe specification, the novel features being set forth in the appended claims. i
In my prior patent of the United States 1,165,-
957, December 28th, 1915, I haveshown and described a portable locomotive drafting device designed for attachment to the discharge end of the stack of a locomotive, and it is the primary object of the invention to improve upon the struc v portable devicefor the reason that the usual acid character of the fumes of combustion forming in the locomotive. stack in firing requires the pipe construction of cast iron for resisting such fumes and the modern tendency to increase the height and size of the locomotivestacks has made the use-of a drafting suction pipe of a character shown in my aforesaid patent elongated, heavy and expensive and diflicult of operation and adjustment particularly in view of the modern tendency to increase the diameter and height of the locomotive discharge stack.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved portable locomotive drafting device of a character capable of ready attachment direct to the smoke box chamber at the end of the boiler fines and at the front end of the. locomotive. v r Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description of the preferred embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary, diagrammatic view of the front end of a locomotive showing the usual smoke stack and the front end smoke box equipped with apeep hole provided with a removable cover designed to accommodate Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a locomotive with" my improved portable drafting device attached thereto and illustrated alternative methods of locomotive during the drafting operation.
Fig.3 isa side elevation view of the portable drafting device of Fig. 2, a fragment of the loco- 55.. motive smoke box being shown to which the discharging the products of combustion from the i with t pivotally attached b31131 by which the drafting device is attached with v.the discharge spout thereof leading toward an opening as a Window in the wall of a building.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged, detailed sectional view being taken approximately on the line 44= of Fig. 5 6o Referring to the drawing, 10 is a platform carried by a frame work 11 and it is adapted to be shifted from place to place for use in drafting various locomotives as in a round house when it is desired to fire any given locomotive. The frame is mounted upon'wheels 12. fan or blower is provided in a casing 13 mounted on the platform 10 and is driven by the motor 14 through the rotor shaft 15.
The intakeor suction end of the fan is provided withan elbow 16 to which is connected for 5 universal adjustment a pipe 17 terminating in an adjustable elbow 18 provided with a peripherally flanged portion 19 adapted to take a co-operating attaching pipe section 20 which has a peripherally enlarged under-cut flange 21 adapted to sur- 0 round the flange on the portion 19 of the intake pipe leading to the exhaust fan or' blower casing 13. The intake pipe section 20 will preferably be of a size adapted to enter a peep hole or' other opening 22in the smoke box casing 23 of a 1000- 5 motive, suchopening being surrounded by the usual peripheral flange 24 carrying one or more and preferablytwo spaced-apart inwardly projectingradial pins 25 designed to co-operate with bayonet joints 26 formed in the'swivelled intake pipe section 20, whereby the intake pipe of the drafting device maybe connected with the smoke box of the locomotive in the most simple and economical manner. 1 i V A vertical'standard 45' is mounted on the platform 10 and supports a swivelly mounted sheave 26 adapted to. receive a flexible cable '27 for sup- 7 porting the discharge pipe of the drafting device which is shown in the drawing, Figs. 2 and 3, as
consisting of the two telescopingsections 28, 29 respectively, the discharge pipe section'28 of the drafting device being swivelly connected at 30 to the exhaust fan casing 13, and the pipe section 29' telescopically mounted thereon being provided direction of the discharge pipe sections maybe maintained and the'longitudinalextensible section 29 supported in its adjusted position for discharging smoke, gases and the like as products of An exhaust in the casing 13 may be started to operate, producing in the smoke box of the locomotive the desired vacuum or draft so that the firing takes place quickly and without inconvenience and all the products of combustion pass through the fan casing 13 and discharged into the smoke receiving hood or opening 32 which is capable of handling them and removing them from the building in the ordinary manner, being in the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 2 either the draft hood 82 attached to a suitable wall or post indicated diagrammatically at 33 and'leading obviously to a pipe, not shown, carried by the wall or post and discharged on the outside of the building. Op-
tionally the usual smoke jack, indicated at '34 for ordinarily taking the products of combustion direct from the stack of the locomotive and to be found in most round houses and running sheds,
may be utilized, under which conditions the dis- 7 charge pipe sections 28, 29 will be adjusted to substantially the position illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The dischargepipe sections 28, 29 may be further operated to discharge thesmoke and other products of combustion from the device in drafting the locomotive as by passing the pipe section 29 through a window of the building as indicated at 35, Fig. 3 but in any event, regardless of the manner of disposalof the products of combustion taken from the locomotive by the drafting device, it is essential to secure the best results to close the stack 36 of the locomotive while the drafting device is being used as by means of the detachable cap 37 over the top thereof shown in Fig. 2. By connecting the smoke box .of the locomotive on one side or to the front end thereof I am able to effect certain economies in construction, toproduce a lighter'device because less of the intake connection leading to the improved apparatus is necessary and I am enabled .to secure improved results by reason of being able can be used in the ordinary way when my im proved'device will bev disconnected and moved to another locomotive which requires firing.
I claim: a
