Description

Nov. 14, 1933. v. GREEN 1,934,705
CLAW HAMMER Filed March 11, 1932 Viaor Green.
Patented Nov. 14, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLAW HAMMER Application March 11, 1932. Serial No. 598,255
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in claw hammers, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a claw hammer having novel and effective claw means whereby a nail may be held by the hammer in a position enabling the hammer to drive the nail into wood.
A further object is to provide a hammer of the character described having means whereby the nail may be withdrawn from the wood in which it is driven, even if the head of the nail be broken off.
A further object is to provide a hammer of the class described having means whereby the shank of a nail may be gripped so effectively that the nail may be easily withdrawn from the wood.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational View of the hammer showing a nail in dotted outline held by the hammer in such a position that the tip end of thenail may be conveniently driven into wood,
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the same, Figure 3 is a perspective view of the hammer,
and
Figure 4 is a section taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of a claw hammer 1, the novel features of which reside in the arcuate claw portion 2 and a recessed portion 3. The recessed portion 3 may be positioned substantially as shown in Figure 1, and provides means whereby the head of the nail may 40 be supported and retained in position when the shank of the nail is gripped by a nail-gripping slotted portion 4 of the claw 2.
The slotted portion 4 of the arcuate claw portion 2 is provided with a V or Ushaped inner wall portion 5, the depth of which increases as the slot extends inwardly toward the central ope ing 6 which receives and retains the handle 7.
The left hand face 9 of the middle claw, as viewed in Figure 2, is beveled in the usual manner. The outer end 10a of the adjacent face of the left hand claw is also conventionally beveled to enable said claws to engage the head of a nail protruding but a short distance. The face of the left hand claw, as viewed in Figure 2, throughout the remainder of its length is provided with an oppositely beveled portion 10, the upper surface 12 of which inclines from adjacent the upper concave edge of the claw to the apex of the slot and thus defines, with the beveled face portion 10, a nail engaging edge or arris 13, which is indicated by dash-line 8 in Figure l. The wall portion 9 protrudes outwardly toward the wall portion 10 and terminates in an outer edge 11 which is adapted to dent or bite into the shank of a nail when it is positioned as shown in dotted outline in Figures 3 and 4.
The edge 13 of the shoulder is also adapted to grip the shank of a nail and dent it so that the nail may be withdrawn by its shank. The manner in which the edges 11 and13 grip the shank of a nail is clearly illustrated in Figure 4. It will be observed that the claw of the hammer is tilted to one side to enable the inclined slot formed on the walls 9 and 10 to accommodate the nail after which, when the handle is pulled in the usual manner, the hammer will tend to right itself and cause the edges 11 and 13 to grip the shank of the nail more securely.
The claw portion 2 may also be provided with a slotted portion 14. The slotted portion 14 is of the conventional type and requires no further description.
In operation the hammer is used as indicated in Figures'B and 4 for withdrawing a nail from the wood or other substance in which it may be driven. The slotted portion 4 of the claw portion 2 and the recessed portion 3 are used for gripping the nail and holding it so that it may be started into the wood. The recessed portion 3 may be slightly offset with respect to the center of the slot 4 so that the nail may be positively gripped by the edges 11 and 13, see Figures 1 and 2.
I claim:
A hammer comprising a pair of similarly dis- .posed claws, one of said claws having the inner face beveled to provide a nail engaging arris adjacent the outer face thereof, said other claw having a beveled face portion defining with said other beveled face an inclined slot for accormnodating a nail when the, hammer is tilted, said beveled face portion of said second mentioned claw terminating at its upper edge in a second nail engaging arris extending from the apex of said slot adjacent the outer face of said claw to a point adjacent the opposite face and forward end thereof.
