IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LAMP-REST AND SHADE-HOLDER.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,438, dated July 24, 1877; application filed April '2, 1877.
To atl lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, PARTRIGK J. CLARK and J osEPE KINTZ, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Combined Lamp-Rest and Shade-Holder. of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of our improved lamprest and shade-holder, shown partly in section.
The invention relates to an improved lamp- I rest and shade-holder combined, by which the shade may be readily swung out of the way, and securely retained in raised position while the fount is taken oft' for refilling and other purposes, the fount being securely applied to -the fount-plate or basket, and any danger of upsetting or dropping the lamp effectually prevented.
The invention consists in the connection of the lamp-fount, having a central cavity, with a spring-wire holder or clamp that screws the fount or basket tightly to the bracket or chandelier; and it also consists in the connection of the fount plate or basket with an adjustable rod carrying the swinging shade-holder.
In the drawing, A represents the fount plateor basket that is secured to the bracket or chandelier by a socket, B, with interior screw-thread tting tightly on a screw-pin of the bracket. The socket B is provided with one or more bent holding-wires, B', that enter into the center cavity C of the fount, as commonly used in lamp-founts placed on gas-tixtures, the wires being compressed by the walls of the central portion C of the fount, so as to exert a strong clamping or binding action thereon.
The fount when placed on the spring-wire holder is rigidly retained on the plate or basket without danger of being thrown oft' or detached from the same in accidental manner.
The wire-holder admits at the same time the ready sliding oft of the fount when lifted in vertical direction, for cleaning, refilling, &c., and the instant replacing by pressing the fount down on the holding device.
To a socket at the circumference of the fount plate or bracket A is attached a vertical rod or post, D, by means of nuts a, which turn on the threaded lower end of the rod D, and bindon the upper and lower sides of the plate. To the upper end of the post D is hinged the shade holder E, that extends around the lower or base part of the chimney, globe, or shade E', and is tightly clamped thereto by a sliding sleeve in the customary manner.
The supporting-rod D may be raised or lowered by the threaded lower end and bindingnuts to conform to the diti'erent sizes of fouuts, the hinged arm admitting the raising of the globe, shade, or chimney, and the removal of the fount from the holder.
The shade or chimney is swung back on the fount as soon as the same is placed in position on the holder, being securely supported in raised position so as to remove and replace the fount and light the lamp in convenient manner.
Having thus described our invention,.we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. rI he socket B, intermediately and detacliably connected at the upper and lower end, respectively, with the fount and plate A, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination ofthe detachable screwsocket B of the fount plate or basket, having a clamping wire-holder, B, with the central portion C of the fount, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
3. The combination of the fount plate or basket with avertically-adj ustable supportingpost, D, carrying the swinging shade or chimney, encircling band or holder, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
PARTRICK J. CLARK. JOSEPH KINTZ.
