Description

A'. M. SMITH.
SHADE-ROLLER. No. 193,426. Patented July 24,1877" UNITED STATES '4 FICE.
ANTHONY M. SMITH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHADE-ROLLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,426, dated July 24, 1877 application filed June 21, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY M. S TH, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shade-Rollers, which improvementis fully set forth in the spcification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 00 .00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3/ y, Fig. 1.
The object of my invention is to produce an adjustable shade-roller, which can be adjusted to windows of any width without cutting the said shade-roller.
1 construct my shade-roller of wood or any suitable material, in two or more sections, the sections fitting into or on each other longitudinally, by means ofslidingjoints or other similar devices, as shown at A, Fig. 1. The rollers can be formed into various shapes, and operate in the'same manner. The length of the roller can be adjusted, and held in position by the metal clamps or stops shown at C, Fig. 1. Two or more of these metal clamps or stops are used, being on opposite sides of the roller, and forming about a quarter of a circle each, more or less, and they are .connected together by the screw E passing through the roller and into the clamp on the opposite side, as shown at C, Fig. 3. These clamps or stops are made of any suitable metal, and of sufficient thickness in the center to contain a thread for the screw E, as shown in Fig. 3.
The outer ends of the clamps or stops are not The advantages and operation of this construction of shade-roller are that windows of any width can be fitted in a moment without cutting the rollers, as a roller used on a narrow window can be used on a wide window by simply releasing the clamps or stops, and drawing the roller apart to the required length, and again tightening up the clamps or stops by means of the screw E, thus making it unnecessary to buy new rollers when changing from a narrow to a wide window. The construction is simple, cheap, and eflective, and requires but few lengths of rollers to fit all the widths required.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Theadjustableshade-rollerA,constructed in two or more sections, havinga slidingjoint,
B, and clamp or stop 0, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The clamp or stop Gin combination with the adjustable shade-roller A, when arranged and operated substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
ANTHONY M. SMITH.
