2 Claims.
The invention relates to a swing and hasv for its primary object to provide a device of this character, wherein the seat board is of a construction to permit the straddling thereof by 5 riders so that such riders are prevented from slipping ofi during the motion of the seat board in the operation of the swing, the seat'board being of a kind to permit a determined number of riders to mount the same and the swing is usable by children or adults.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a swing of this character, wherein in the working thereof the operators are subjected to exercise which is beneficial and the motion to the swing is efiected through a toggle action imparted both by the hands and feet of the riders.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a swing of this character, wherein the seat board is of a waved conformation and when in motion will be prevented from side sway and tends to hold the riders in proper position and to keep them from sliding back and forth, thus making the swing particularly easy and enjoyable as it creates a feeling of security and places more weight upon the feet .of the riders, thereby relieving the latter of the necessity of maintaining position by hanging on with the hands.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a swing of this character, wherein its passengers will'be assured of comfort and any variations in weight of the respective riders on any part of the swing does not affect the operation of the same. i
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a swing of this character which is extremely simple in construction, readily and easily erected, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
40 With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a swing constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional View on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a sectional View on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a sectional View on the line 6-6 of Figure 2.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the swing constituting the present invention comprises a pair of long standards or supports 10, these at their upper ends carrying upwardly arched bows or heads 11, while the lowerends are provided with feet 12 which may be rested upon a foundation or anchored thereto at the option of the erector of such swing.
Mounted within the bows or heads 11 diametrically opposite each other are channeled or U beams 13, these being horizontally disposed and bridge the space between the standards or supports with the ends thereof slightly protruded beyond the same. Swingingly connected to the beams 13 at equidistances from each other are the hangers 14, these having'lower hook ends 15 while at the upper ends are carried hubs 16 fitted upon stud axles 17 made fast in the channeled beams 13.
Suspended from the hook ends 15 of the hangers 14 are bails 17, these forming lower foot rungs 18 and upper handle rungs 19 respectively. Each bail 17 loosely carries coupling members 20 engaged by the hooks 15 forthe suspension of said bails by the hangers 14 as will be obvious. Formed centrally on the foot rungs 18 of the bail 1'7 are toggle acting arms 21, these at their upper ends beingpivoted at 22 to the center beam 23 of a seat board 24. This seat board'is o1 waved formation and has the seat areas 25 and contracted leg straddling portions 26 respectively. The raised seat areas 25 have underlying the same braces 2'7 which are carried by the center beam 23..
I Pivoted to the arms 21 medially of their length and located therebetween is a connecting bar 28, the same having its pivotal connection 29 with said arms21. Thus it should be apparent that when the seat-board is'occupied by riders or passengers and the feet and hands of such riders or passengers engage and manipulate the rungs 18 and 19 a toggle motion is set up so as to give momentum to the center beam 23 of the seat board 24 and the swing set in motion. By increased manipulation the momentum of the swing will be intensified and thus the riders or passengers will be subjected to exercise in the operation of such swing.
The seat areas 25 of the seat board 24 are located between the bails 17 and also outside of the outermost of these. Thus the seat board has a capacity for a number of riders or passengers.
Connected with the standards or supports 10 are crossed braces 30 which give rigidity to the swing.
The mounting of the seat board in the bails 1'7 avoids any side sway when the swing is in action.
What is claimed is:
1. A swing of the character described comprising spaced standards, horizontally arranged sills carried by the standards, hangers swingingly suspended from such sills, bails linked with the hangers, hand and foot rungs on each bail, arms rising from the foot rungs, a seat board pivotally connected to the arms, and a connecting rod pivoted intermediate of the arms, said seat board leg straddling areas, hooks on the hangers, and
connectors loosely engaged with the bails and the hook portions for linking the bails and hangers together.
