My invention relates to improvements in gripping means whereby a strip or body of building material may be secured to a wall, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a gripping means whereby a body or strip of wood, metal, or other building material may be'fixedly secured to a wall.
Another object of my invention is the provision of the means whereby a solid body may be speedily attached to a hollow tile wall or to a wall having perforated lathing, such as for instance, a lathing material of expanded metal.
Another object of my invention is to provide a means for and a method of rapidly securing grounds, molding, baseboards, and the like to a hollow wall or a wall utilizing perforated reenforcement means.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a metal strip embodying the preferred form of my invention as applied in use,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the structure shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevational view of the metal strip,
Figure 4 is an end elevational View of the strip, and
Figure 5 is a modified form consisting of a comparatively stiif section of metal wire looped and twisted in simulation of the preferred form of my invention.
Now referring to Figures 3 and 4, in carrying out my invention I make use of a bent flat metal strip 1 having an ear 2 and a flange portion 3 offset approximately at right angles with respect to each other and to an integral curved U-shaped main body portion 4. The body portion 4 is provided with curved spaced-apart arm portions 5 and 6 which may be tapered and extend downwardly and to one side, substantially as shown.
The metal plate 1 may be made of a cut-out portion of any suitable metal sheet. The sheet may be of iron, brass, or any other suitable metal having sufficient rigidity for the purpose intended.
From the foregoing description of the strip, the operation thereof may be readily understood.
For the purpose of. illustration I have shown the device of my invention applied in securing a molding strip 7 to a hollow wall-8. The hollow wall 8 may consist of a plurality of hollow brick tiles 9 cemented or otherwise joined together. The strip 7 may be provided withcutout portions 10 of approximately the same depth as the thickness of the flanged portion 3, for the purpose of preventing the flanged portion 3 from projecting above the outer surface of the molding 7.
The tile may be perforated, as is indicated at 11 and 12, for the purpose of receiving the arm 5 of the strip 1 and enabling the 5 to secure a grip on the brick tile 9. The metal strips are alternately placed on the upper and lower sides of the strip '7 and the tip 13 of the arm 5 may point either toward each other, as is indicated at 14, or they may point away from each other, as is indicated at 15.
The metal strip 1 may be secured to the mold! ing 7 by means or" a screw 16. The ear 2 is provided for the purpose of enabling the carpenter or plasterer to hold the strip 1 in position while it is being secured to the molding '7 and the tiles 9. The ear 2, is hidden when the wall 8 is plastered. Where the strip 1 is intended to be used on a wall which is not to be plastered, the strip 1 may, if desired, be made without the ear portion 2.
In Figure 5, I have shown a modified form of my invention consisting of a section of metal wire 17 which is twisted together as indicated at 18 to form a looped portion 19 and curved arm portions 20 and 21. The looped portion 19 is adapted to perform the same function as the flange 3. The curved arm portions 20 and 21 serve the same function as the arms 5 and 6, respectively. The wire 17 should be of sufiicient rigidity to serve for the purpose intended. The loop 19 may be of such size that it will receive a screw or thread in the same manner as the perforated flange portion 3.
It is apparent that I have provided a very convenient means for rapidly attaching a block or strip to any wall which may be easily perforated. It is equally obvious that either the strip 1 or the wire 1'7 may be used in securing molding strips to a wall. Due to the curved shape of the arms 5 and 6 and the wire portions 20 and 21, my invention may be used equally well in attaching a thick piece of molding and a thin piece of molding. It is also obvious that either form of my invention may be readily applied to any perforated lathing, such as is used for plastering purposes. One well known form of this lathing consists of expanded metal having numerous perforations, any of which may receive the arm portions 5 and 6 or the end portions 20 and 21 of the devices disclosed herein.
Another advantage of this invention is that it is particularly applicable in applying strips to a Wall which is warped or a wall the hollow tiles of which are not in alignment with each other.
Where a portion of the wall is offset or out of alignment with the rest of the Wall, a block may be placed between the Wall and the molding for the purpose of preventing the molding strip from being bent out of alignment.
I claim:
1. A gripping means of the character described adapted for securing a strip to perforated portions of a wall, said device comprising a flat metal strip having a bent flanged top portion, and integral and downwardly extend ing spaced-apart curved arm portions, said arm portions and said flanged top portion being positioned in planes substantially at right angles to each other, said strip being also provided with an integral ear portion, said ear portion, said flanged portion, and said arm portions extending in a plane substantially at right angles to each other.
2. A gripping means of the character described adapted for securing a strip to perforated portions of a wall, said device comprising a flat metal strip having a perforated bent flanged top portion, and integral and downwardly extending spaced-apart curved arm portions, said arm portions and said flanged top portion being positioned in planes substantially at right angles to each other, said strip being also provided with an integral ear portion, said ear portion, said flanged portion, and said arm portions extending in a plane substantially at right angles to each other.
3. A gripping means of the character described adaptable for use in securing a strip of building material to the perforated side of a wall, said gripping means comprising a section of wire having a looped central top portion, and curved end portions extending laterally to one side of the axis of said loop, said end portions being positioned in a plane substantially at right angles to said looped portion.
4. A device of the character described comprising a pair of integral curved co-planar arms and an end disposed at right angles to the plane of said arms and provided with an opening for receiving a fastening means, one of said arms being curved on a smaller radius than the other and both extending in the same lateral direction with respect to the axis of said opening.
