INVENTDB ATTRNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM sPETHMANN, or NEW YORK, N'. Y., AssIGNoE To HIMsELE AND ELIAs DUELAoE, oE sAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN EEDSZFOR MUSlCAL INSTRUMENTS.A
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,192., dated July 17, 1877-; application filed June 11, 1877.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM SPETH- MANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Musical Reed, of which the following is a specification Figure lis a front 4view of one of my improved reeds. Fig. 2 is-a detail section of the same, taken through the line .fr x, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved reed for toy trumpets and other reed musical instruments, which shall be neater and simplerin construction, and less expensive in manufacture than when constructed in the usual way.
The invention consists in a musical reed, in which the reed or reeds is or are cut out of the body of the plate, so as to be in one piece therewith, and having corrugations in the said plate, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents a piece of thin sheet brass or 'other suitable metal, of any desired shape and size, as the particular instrument in which the reed is to be used may require.
a1 is the reed, which is formed by slitting the plate A along two sides, and one end of l so as to give any desired tone.
the reed al, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The reed al may be varied in length and breadth rJhe plate A has a corrugation, a2, formed in it around the edge of the reed al to withdraw the edge of the plate A from the edge of the reed al, so that the said reed can vibrate without touching the edge of the plate A.
The plate A has a corrugation, a3, formed in it around its edge to stiften it, and enable it to be made of sheet metal suciently thin to serve as a musical reed.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to construct a musical reed and supporting'plate of one piece of metal.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'A musical reed in which the reed or reeds al is or are cutout of the body of the plate A, so as to be in one piece therewith. and having the corrugations a2 and a3 formed in the said plate, substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM SPETHMANN.
