WALL AND CEILING CONSTRUCTION Filed Oct. 6, 1930 INVENTOR ('zzr270raiI a2per ATTORNEY5 Patented Oct. 24, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 8 Claims.
The present invention relates to a novel wall and ceiling construction adapted particularly for use in connection with plaster boards and the like.
The invention has particular reference to that type of wall and ceiling constructions in which double channel members are arranged at opposed parallel edges of the plaster boards for supporting and reinforcing the same, the present invention relating particularly to an improved construction of clips or hangers by means of which the channeled members and the edges of the plaster boards are supported with respect to the frame members.
The present invention has as one of its primary objects to provide an improved construction of clips or hangers by means of which the erection of the wall or ceiling is simplified by reducing the number of operations required and by means of which a more permanent and rigid wall or ceiling construction is produced.
The several objects, advantages and novel details of construction of my invention will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a detail fragmentary perspective view of a ceiling construction embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 2--2 in Figure 1; 1
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the forms of clips or hangers employed;
Figure 4 is a similar view of another of the clips or hangers employed;
Figure 5 is a sectional plan view taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 55 showing the clip in engagement with adjacent edges of a plaster board, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective one form of clip or hanger employed.
Referring now particularly to Figure 1, it will be noted that there is illustrated a frame member 10 to which it is desired to secure plaster boards 11. The opposed parallel edges of the plaster boards are adapted to be engaged by double channeled members 12 which in turn are secured to the frame member 10 by the clips or hangers forming the particular subject matter of this invention. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 1, two forms of clip members indicated generally by the reference characters 13 and 14 are employed, these clip members being shown respectively in Figures 4 and 3.
The hanger or clip member 13 as shown in Figure 4 comprises a portion 14' adapted to engage in one of the channels of the double channeled member 12 and an extension 15 slotted to view of provide a jaw opening 16 adapted for detachable engagement with the frame member 10 in the manner clearly illustrated. The portion 14' of the clip is provided with return-bent lugs or ears 17 adapted to engage the outer surface of one of the channel portions of the channel member to securely grip the same. A projection 14. engages the opposed surface of the channel to insure a secure gripping engagement.
The other clip or hanger member 14 shown in Figure 3 is provided with a portion 18 adapted to be engaged within or enclosed by one of the channel portions of the double channeled member and provided with a slotted extension 19 providing opposed jaws or lugs 20 adapted for detachable engagement with the frame member 10. The clip portion 18 is provided with prongs or piercing portions 21 adapted to be driven into the edge of the plaster board. for securing the plaster board to the frame member 10, with return-bent lugs or ears 18' to engage the outer surface of the channel member. A projection 18" is provided, engaging the opposed surface of the channel.
In practice one of the channel members 12 will be secured to the frame member 10 by means of, for instance, a pair of clips 13. Thereafter one of the plaster boards 11 will have one of its longitudinal edges engaged in the opposed channel of the double channeled member 12 and thereafter a clip 14 will be engaged with the frame member 10 and the prongs 21 thereof driven into the edge of the plaster board as clearly illustrated in Figure 1. Thus the channel member supports the one edge of the plaster board and the clips 14 engaging respectively the frame members 10 will support the other edge of the plaster board until the next channeled member 12 can be placed in position and secured to the frame member 10 by other clips 13 engaging the channel thereof opposite to the channel which is already embracing the edge of the erected plaster board. In this manner the channels and plaster boards may be successively erected and permanently connected to the frame members 10 in a manner which will be quite obvious.
In Figure 6 there is illustrated a modified form of clip indicated generally by the reference character 22, this form of clip being capable of use either as the previously described clip 13 or the previously described clip 14. It will be noted that this clip or hanger is provided with a portion 23 adapted to engage in one of the channels of the double channeled member and with return-bent lugs or ears 24 engaging the outer surface of the channeled member and cooperating with the portion 23 to grip the same. The clip is provided with a slotted extension 25 providing opposed lugs or jaws 26 for detachable engagement with the frame member 10.
When this clip is used to support the edge of the plaster board before the next channel member has been erected, a nail or the like 2'7 may be driven through an aperture 28 provided for the purpose in the angularly arranged portion 29 of the clip portion 23. Obviously, when this clip is used as the clip 13, the nail is not employed. With this latter form of construction it is obvious but a single type of clip can be used in the first instance either to support the channel member 12 or the opposed edge of the plaster board before the channel member is put into position.
Various modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in this art and to this end reservation is made to make such changes as may come within the purview of the accompanying claims.
