Description

L. FRIEDMAN Oct. 24, 1933.
CLEANER Filed June 2, 1931 INVENTOR Lou/'6 filed/7704 BY m3 ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 24, 1933 x UNITED STATES PATENroFFIcE CLEANER Louis Friedman, Brooklyn, N. Y. I Application June 2, 1931. Serial No. 541,698
4 Claims. (01. 15-209) This invention relates to cleaners, and more particularly to cleaners utilizing a mechanical abrasive.
The objects of the invention are to provide improved means for securing a mechanical abrasive to a holder; to utilize the abrasive as means for retaining the holder assembled; to enable the abrasive to be easily applied to the holding means; to avoid protruding parts from the rubbing surface of the abrasive; to secure simplicity of construction and operation; and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views;
Figure 1 is an elevation of a cleaner embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a plan thereof; and
3-3 of Figure 1.
In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates a cup shaped holder member preferably having a substantially flat bottom wall 2 and a substantially cylindrically formed upstanding edge wall 3 in the present disclosure. However, other shapes than cylindrical may be utilized within the scope of my invention.
A cooperating inner member 4 is provided having depending side walls 5 the shape of which corresponds in contour with the shape of the upstanding wall of the outer member and accordingly in the present showing is cylindrical. Preferably the lower peripheral edge of the said inner member 4 is curled inward thereby forming an inturned flange 6. The upper wall of said inner member provides a convenient means for mounting a handle '7 which may be secured 40 thereto in any appropriate manner as by screws In the use of the device a pad of steel wool or corresponding abrasive 9 is applied to the outside of the cup shaped holder member 1 which accordingly positions the holder member within the abrasive. The abrasive has a size such that the margin thereof may be turned inwardly over the upper edge of the upstanding edge wall 3. The cooperating inner mem-, ber A is then forced downwardly within the outer member carrying the inturned margin of the abrasive pad therewith compressing the said pad for the part thereof lying between the I parallel walls 3 and 5 of the inner and outer members. This compressive action obtains a Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view on line frictional mounting for the inner member with respect to the outer member and yet the members may be separated when desired without use of any tools and without any material difficulty.
Obviously detail changes and modifications 0 may be made in the construction and use of my improved cleaner without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction shown or described ex- 5 cept as set forth in the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A scouring device including an outer cupped member having a bottom wall and a cylindrical side wall, an inverted inner cupped member having a top wall and a cylindrical side wall, and a steel wool pad extending continuously under and around the bottom and side wall of the outer member and the latter continuously supporting the same, said steel wool pad having a portion infolded into the outer member over the rim of side wall thereof, the side wall of the inner member being disposed within the infolded portion of the steel wool pad in direct 30 contact therewith, the side wall of the inner member. being uniform so as to be adapted to be snugly fitted in said infolded portion, and the latter being engaged between the side walls of the outer and inner members for frictionally en- 5 gaging the side wall of the latter member and thereby securing the members together in an operative assembly.
2. A scouring device including inner and outer members, the outer member having an opening for receiving a portion of the inner member, said members being engageable and separable from each other by movement along the axis of said opening, said opening and the portion received therein having spaced walls facing each other and being parallel tosaid axis, and 'a steel wool pad extending over the outer member and snugly into the space between said walls in contact therewith for retaining said pad and for biting into the parallel walls of said members to releasably strongly hold the members in engagement with each other.
3. A scouring device including an outer member having an opening, a pad of steel wool passing around said member and having opposite portions extending into said opening, and an inner member removably inserted in said opening disposed so that the said portions of the steel wool pad are snugly engaged between said members, the inner member having parallel wall All) surface, and snugly engaged between said members to frictionally interengage the same and hold the pad in position, said members having substantially parallel surfaces of considerable area with which said pad is in contact for holding the members together independently of any other securing means.
