Description

Oct. 24, 1933. R, K. MERRILL 1,931,504
CHAIR Filed April 2, 1932 Patented Oct. 24, 1933 STATES PATENT oFFlcE CHAIR Application April 2, 1932. Serial No. 602,643 1 claim. (ci. 155-194) The present invention relates to chairs, and its object is to provide improved and very stable means for mounting the back of a chair on the seat thereof.
This object is attained by, and the invention iinds preferable embodiment in, the chair structure particularly described in the body of this specircation andillustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 isan elevational front view of a chair; Figure 2 is an elevational side view (enlarged) thereof;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of a corner por'- tion of the seat of the chair; y
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional View of certain parts taken on line 4 4 of Figure 2; and
Figure is a horizontal sectional view oi a part of the same taken on line 5 5 of Figure 2.
The chair illustrated by these views has a seat 1 provided with a suitable support, as the leg or post 2, and a back mounted on the seat bythe following means:
Laterally spaced members designated generally 3 at the opposite sides of the chair are formed of bent sheet metal, each of said members having a vertical portion and a horizontal portion, the vertical portion being secured to the chairs back and the horizontal portion to its seat.
Each oi said vertical portions comprises flanges 4, 5 angularly disposed in a horizontal plane, to one (or both) of which the chairs back is secured, one of these flanges 4 extending inwardly behind said back and secured, in the shown construction, to its horizontal upper part 6 as by screws 7, the other one of these anges 5 having a iange 8 parallel therewith on its inner side as shown in Figures 4 and 5. Each of said members 3 has also a horizontal lower portion comprising flanges 9, 10 angularly disposed in avertical plane, one of which anges 9 is secured as by screws 11 to the side edge 12 of the seat, the other flange 10 being secured as by screws 13 to the under side thereof.
The inwardly extending ange 4 of said vertical portion of each member 3 has a lower ex- 60 tension or tongue 14 extending under the seat and secured thereto as by a screw 15 passing through this tongue and through the horizontal flange 10 of said lower portion.
The chair back, or the part 16 thereof, is turn- 65 ably mounted on said members 3 by horizontal pivot pins 17 extending through the parallel flanges 5, 8 of the vertical portions of said members 3. It will be seen that this construction provides a very stable mounting of the chairs back on its seat.
I claim: y
In a chair having a seat and a back: a pair of laterally-spaced members integrally formed of bent sheet metal, each havingy a vertical portion comprising'anges angularly disposed to one of which flanges the back is secured, one of said flanges extending inwardly behind the back and the other of said flanges having a flange parallel therewith, each of said members having also a 80 horizontal portion comprising flanges angularly disposed one of them being secured to the side edge of the seat and the other secured to the under side thereof, the inwardly extending iiange of said vertical portion having a tongue extending under the seat in contact therewith, then downwardly from the seat to form a shoulder and then parallelly with the bottom of the seat and beneath and in contact with the iiange of said horizontal portion which extends under the seat; means extending through the ange of said horizontal portion and through the part of the tongue which is in contact therewith for securing the same on the bottom of the seat.
