(01.101-58) This-invention relates to printingmaoh-ines and more especially to a selector for such machines of the character through'which variable printing devices are sequentially Passed from which printing impressions are made.
The salient object of myinvention is to pro vide a novel selector for determining whether or not impressions are to be made from the printing devices passed through the machine. The selection or determination of the printing de vices is usually controlled by suitable means on the printing devices such as removable tabs, notches, openings, or the like. However, the size oi the printing devices is usually limited-andthe number of such determining'means that can be provided. is consequently limited. In the art, eachof such means is known as a primary selection and the selection may be determined from any oneof these means or from a grouppof such means. However, groupseleotions are of course dependent upon the number of primary selections; and it is therefore an important object of my invention to provide a selector having a large number of primary selections; i V

Movement of the arm 1 41 is limited lay-engagement thereof with a pin 42 on the arm 43 of the rocker, generally indicated by 44, V pivotally. mounted at 45 on the bracket 46. Also mounted on the'bracket 46 is the rocking member 47 having plates 48 and 49 thereon between which a recess 50 is defined, Adjacent the rocking, member 47 is an arm 51 having a recess'52 therein and a shoulder 54 is defined at one end of the recess 53. One end of therod 55 ismovable into the recess 53 or'onto the-shoulder 54 and when disposed on the shoulder 54 the'rockingmember '47, which is connected to the arm 51 through the spring 56, is disposed in the position illustrated in Fig. 2. Pivotally mounted at 57 on'the rocker 15 is a pawl 58'havi'ng a nose 59 engageable with the plate '60 on the arm 61 0f the rocker 44. When the rocker 151s moved in the manner previously described the nose 59 of the pawl 58 engages the plate and pivots the rocker 44 to move the pin 42 upwardly from the position illustrated in Fig. 1so that said pin 'will'be disposed out of the recess 50. In a manner to be described the rocking member .47 is positioned so that either the plate 48 'or 49 or the recess 50 will be'positioned below the pin 42 after movement thereof out of the-recess 50. Wherithe nose 59- disengages the" plate 60 the rocker 44 pivots in a clockwisedirection'and the pin 42 moves downwardly. Should the pin 42 move-into the recess'50 the arm 41 will move downwardly'and the roller 39 will be disposed in the recess 35. However, should the pin 42 come to rest on either the plate 48 or the position and the roller 39 will be disposed on the shoulder 36' and the pawlf33 will not engage the plate 32 and consequently no movement will be imparted to the rocker 31. On the rocker 15" there is a-pawl 62, the nose of which is engageable with a plate 63 on the rocker 64 pivotally mounted on the shaft 65 journal'ed in the frame 11'. Also mounted on the shaft 65 and on the. shaft 65' is'the'selector' bar structure'66 and a' spring 67 is interposed between the structure 66 and the rocker 64. A plate 68'carried by the bar 70 is movable downwardlyv in a certain amount to be described presently and engagesthe upper end of the rod 55 to move the same'and thereby position the rocking -mernber 47 as previously described. The selector bar structure. carries the bar 70 in which a'plurality of transversely and longitudinally aligned openings are provided into which pins 71 may be introduced when'the removable plate '72 (Figs. 3 and 4) is removed. The'positioning of the pins 71in certain of the openings in the bar 70 will be described'more' fully presently. Disposed .below the plane oi. the plate guideway 19 is a block 73 which has .a
plurality of transversely and longitudinally aligned openings therein positioned correspondingly to the openingsfin the bar 70.

'The tabs T are illustrated in detail in Figs. 7
to 10, inclusive, and these tabs include body portions which project beyond the edge of the printing device when the tabs are installed in position, this being clearly illustrated in Fig. 6. On these tabs the detecting means are in the form of embossages or protuberances. These protuberances are, in the present instance, embossed at any of four different positions on the body portions of the tabs. In'Fig."7 the pro-' tuberance A is embossed on the body portion of the tab T adjacent the upper right hand corner thereof. In Fig. 8 the protuberance B is'shown on the body portion of the tab adjacent the upper left hand corner thereof.- In Fig. 9 the protuberance C is shown on the body portion of the tab adjacent the lower right hand corner thereof. And inFig. 10 the protuberance D is shown on thebody portion of the tab adjacent the lower left hand corner thereof. The determination of the selection results from the disposition of the embossages or protuberances A, B, C, and D on the tabs T, which tabs T in turn are disposed at various positions along the edge of the printing device. In the present embodiment, of-the invention the printing device is arranged to have twelve" such tabs T secured thereto and since each of the tabs may be provided with an embossage at any of four difi'erent' positions'it is manifest that I am enabled to thereby attain forty-eight primary selections.

It has; been pointed out that the pins 71 are 7 arranged in two rows in transverse and in longitudinal'alignment. The pins 71 in one transverse row will be aligned with the protuberances positioned similarly to the protuberances A and;
B, while the pins in the other transverse row will be aligned with protuberances positioned similarly :to. the protuberances C and D. The spacing apart of the pins in the tworows just described corresponds to the spacing apart ofthe protuberances A and B, and C and D; and
since, for example, the protuberances A- and'C,

An example of a group selection may be that a printing device having tabs positioned as indicated in Fig. 6 might be used and only printing devices having tabs and protuberances as illustrated in Fig. 6 will be printed. I have stated that the positions A, B, C, and D of the protuberances indicate the primary selections, but it is manifest that a tab might be provided with more than one protuberance which, in itself, would constitute a group. Such a tab is indicated in the position '75 in Fig. 6, and this tab T has protuberances B and C thereon.
When printing devices such as those illustrated in Fig. dare to be printed with the machine arranged as previously described, the pins 71 will be disposed to correspond to the positions of the protuberances on the tabs at the positions illustrated. Therefora'when these pins strike these protuberances a printing operation will be performed as previously described. Should these pins fail to strike the protuberances the printing device will be skipped.
In the foregoing description I have describeda selection as being performed to print print-'- ing devices tabbed only in a certain manner, but as is well understood in the art this arrangement might be reversed and printing devices tabbed in a certain manner would be skipped, while all others would be printed,
In the foregoing description I have described a selected embodiment of my invention but it is to be understood that this is capable of variation and modification and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to availmyself of such changes and alterations as fall within the purview of the following claims:

In a printing machine, means sequentially moving printing devices therethrough, the printing devices having tabs engaged therewith, at Y predetermined places, saidf tabs embodying predetermined positions whereat embossages may be formed,; an operating part in the printing machine, a selector for controlling the operation of said operating part and including a selector bar having a plurality of transversely and longitudinally aligned rows of openings therein positioned correspondingly tothe predetermined positions on said tabs whereby pins may be mounted in selected openings for cooperation with the predetermined positions on said tabs to determine the operation of said selector.

In; aprinting machine including an operating part, and means for feeding printing devices-through selector and printing positions in the machine, said printing devices having tabs secured at selected places along corresponding edges thereof, and said tabs having predetermined places whereat embossages may be formed, the combination of a selector mechanism for controlling the operation of said operating part and including a selector bar movable toward and away from the tabs on the printing device at selector position, said selector bar having a plurality of openings therein respectively aligned with the predetermined places whereat embossages may be formed on the tabs on the printing device at selector position, and pins mounted in said openings and adaptedto cooperate with the predetermined placesfon said tabs to determine the operation of said selector mechanism.

In a printing machine, meanssequentially moving printing devices therethrough, said printing devices including tabs engaged therewith at predetermined places, said tabs having protuberances on the face thereof at. selected predetermined positions, a platen, a selector conopenings thereinpositioned correspondingly to the predetermined positions onsaid tabs where by pins mounted in selectedopenings for cooperation with protuberances at selected predetermined positions determine operation of said selector. l g

In a printing machine which has a platen for making impressions from printing devices fed into printing position in the machine, and means for feeding printing devices which have tabs secured at selected places along corresponding edges thereof and which tabs have embossages thereon at predetermined places, the combination of a selector mechanism for controlling the operation of the platen and including a selector bar movable toward and away from the tabs on the printing devices, said selector bar having a plurality of transversely and longitudinally aligned openings therein, and pins mounted in said openings and adapted to cooperate with the embossages on said tabs to determine the operation of said selector mechanism.
5. In a printing machine which has a. platen for making impressions from printing devices fed into printing position in the machine, and
means for feeding printing devices which have u tabs secured at selected places along corresponding edges thereof and which tabs have embossages thereon at' predetermined places, the combination of a selector mechanism for controlling the operation' of the platen and including a selector barmovable toward and away from the tabs on the printing devices, said selector bar having two rows of openings therein in side by side relation with each opening in' one row aligned with an opening in the other row, and pins mounted in selected openings and adapted to cooperate with the embossages on the tabs to determine the operation of said selector mechanism.
