4 Claims. (Cl. 29249) lhe present invention relates to window locks and has for its main object the provision of a window lock provided with a pair or gripping jaws for the purpose of clamping a m'uilion in 5 the type or windows which are divided into i'rame sections by bars known as mullions.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a window lock of the character indicated which may have a pair of gripping jaws for the purpose or" engaging a mulllon whereby the two window sashes may be caused to remain in a relative rigid locked condition for preventing shifting of one sash with respect to the other, and wherein suitable means may be provided for rigidly maintaining the gripping jaws in gripping association with a mullion.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of means in connection with a window lock of the character indicated, wherebyt he lock may be hingedly shifted in order to render the same inoperative.
A still further object or" the present invention is the provision of a window look including a pair of gripping jaws, wherein one jaw may have regulating means for shifting the same towards the other to adopt the jaws to clamp various widths of mullions.
l fith the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring in detail to the present drawing there is shown therein window generally indicated by 10, including lower sash 11 and its upper horizontal bar 12, and the upper sash 13 including the lower horizontal bar 12 thereof. The sashes with which the lock is intended to cooperate are made in sections defined by upright bars or mullions 1%, into which sections panes 15 are adapted to fit.
The invention further includes a mounting plate 16 made U-shaped with the resulting arms 1? laterally extending from the body portion of said plate 16 and from a pair of opposite edges thereof. Said plate 16 is adapted to be permanently and rigidly attached to the upper face of the horizontal bar 12 of the lower window sash by means of a pair of screws 18 passing through suitable apertures made in said plate 16.
The invention also includes a mounting plate 19, upon which the principal portions of the lock hereinafter desoribed are mounted. Said plate 19 adjacent one of its edges if cut away to define a substantially U-shaped recess 2c within which plate 15 is accommodated. Said recess 26 adjacent the opposite edges of said plate 19 defines a pair of oppositely disposed prongs 21 embracing arms 17, said prongs 21 being hingedly connected to the respective adjacent arms 17 by means of pins 22. From the construction described it will be seen that plate 19 is hingedly and angularly shiitable with respect to plate 16 upon pins 22.
The lock proper includes a pair or oppositely disposed lever-members generally indicated by 23 disposed above plates 16 and 19 while the L lock remains in an operative position upon the window as shown on Figs. 2 and 3. Said levermembers at their front ends terminate in clamp ing jaws 24, while their rear ends are enlarged on vertical plane, as clearly seen on Fig. 3, to define substantially spade-shaped arms 25.
The central portions of said lever-members 23 converge towards each other and forwardly and rearwardiy they diverge from each other, merging into the clamping jaws 24 and arms 25, respectively. Each of said lever-members 23 on its outer side is provided with an integrally formed horizontal strengthening rib 26, merging forwardly into the clamping jaw 24 and rearwardly into arm 25, as is clearly seen on Fig. 2.
Each of said lever-members 23 at its central portion is 'iulcrumed upon pin 27. Each of the two pins 27 at its upper end is provided with an integrally formed comparatively large head 28, while the lower end of each of said pins 27 is reduced and threaded to receive nut 29 whereby each of said pins 27 is maintained in position and prevented from making any vertical shifting movement with relation to plate 19. Said plate 19 on its underface is provided with a longitudinal groove 30 wherein the threaded ends of pins 27 and nuts 29 are countersunk.
The invention further includes pin 31 which passes through heads 28 transversely of said lever members 23, one end of said pin terminating in a head 32 while the opposite end thereof is threaded to receive nut 33.
Receivable between heads 28 and upon the central portion of said pin 31 is the front end of handle 34 which is adapted to make angular swinging movements upon said pin 31. The central portion of said handle 34 defines a downwardly depending bulge 35 which is wider on cross-section than the remaining portions of said handle 34, as seen on Fig. 2. Said bulge 35 is downwardly tapered on cross-section to define wedge 36, as is clearly shown on Fig. 4.
The opposite free end of said handle 34 extends beyond arms 25 and is longitudinally reduced, as seen on Fig. 3, to facilitate manual grasping for shifting said handle 34 upon its pivot 31.
From the hereinabove described construction it will be seen that clamping jaws 24 are adapted to grip therebetween mullion 14 as seen on Fig. 2. To prevent scratching of the faces of said mullion 14 each of said clamping jaws on the inner face thereof is provided with a hard rubber pad 37 receivable within rectangular slot 38 made at the inner face of each of said jaws 24 wherein said rubber pad 3'? is frictionally embedded.
When it is desired to interlock the two window sashes by means of the present lock, handle 34 is raised upon its pivot point to the position shown by dotted lines on Fig. 3. This will make the lever-members 23 inoperative or out of clamping engagement with mullion 14. When one of the sashes is raised with respect to the other and it is desired to make the present look operate, handle 34 is brought down and forced downwardly as far as the handle will go, which operation will force wedge 36 between arms 25 and force them outwardly, in consequence of which operation the gripping tension of clamping jaws 24 upon mullion 14 will be increased.
To adopt the present lock to various widths of mullions with which the same is intended to cooperate, one of the lever-members 23 may be made adjustable with relation to the other lever-member. This is accomplished by means of slot 39 made in plate 19 within which the lower end of one of the pins 27 is accommodated, as seen on Fig. 5. By unscrewing nut 29 from said one pin 27 and likewise temporarily removing nut 33 from pin 31 pin 27 with its head 28 may be shifted, whereby one of said levermembers 23 may be bodily shifted, in consequence of which clamping jaws 24 may be farther removed from each other to grasp a mullion of a larger width. To maintain the levermembers 23 in their spread newly adjusted position, washers or spacers 40 through which pin 31 passes, may be interposed between one of heads 28 and the adjacent face of handle 34, or two such washers may be interposed between the both heads 28 and the adjacent faces of handle When it is desired to shift one window sash with respect to the other without interference from the lock hereinabove described, and more particularly from clamping jaws 24, the entire locking mechanism, including plate 19, may be bodily raised or angularly shifted upon pins 22, which operation may be manually accomplished as is obvious. Obviously, when plate 19 is an gularly shifted handle 34 should be disengaged from arms 25 as otherwise the shifting of said plate 19 could not be accomplished due to the engagement of jaws 24 at mullion 14. When said plate 19 is completely shifted upon pins 22 the same will assume a substantially vertical position with relation to either window sash. So that angular shifting of said plate 19 may be facilitated, and any interference between arms 25 and plate 16 may be avoided, said latter plate at its outer edge has a cut away portion 41 coinciding with the adjacent portion of arms 25 while the same make shifting movement with plate 19.
When plates 16 and 19 remain in an alined 0perative position, illustrated on Fig. 2, and it is desirable to make the two plates rigidly connected to prevent shifting of one plate with respect to the other, for increasing the efficiency of the lock, suitable locking means between the two plates is provided including arm 42 reposing within correspondingly shaped recess made in plate 16. One of the ends of said arm 42 is pivoted upon pin 43, while the other, free end thereof, terminates in a raised lug 44 whereby said arm 42 may be manually shifted upon pivot 43. Plate 19,;at one of its bars 21 adjacent the recess in plate 16 wherein arm 42 is accommodated, is reduoed in thickness to the depth of the recess wherein said arm 42 is accommodated to define groove 45 within which said arm 42 under manual actuation at lug 44 may shift. Thus, when said arm 42 is shifted to its operative position, to assume the position shown by dotted lines on Fig. 2, the same will overlie the reduced portion of the adjacent bar 21 and within groove 45 for the purpose of preventing any upward shifting movement of plate 19.
The hereinabove. described window locking mechanism, including all parts thereof, is generally indicated by 46 on Fig. 1.
While there is described herein a preferred embodiment of the present invention it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
1. A window lock adapted to cooperate with a window of the type having mullions, comprising a base, a pair of lever members, pins upon which said lever members are pivoted for horizontal swinging movement upon said base, one 11:
of the ends of said lever members constituting clamping jaws, heads integrally formed with said pins and overlying the upper edges of said lever members, a horizontal pin passing through said heads, and a handle pivoted by one ends upon said last named pin, a portion of said handle being tapered to define a wedge, which under manual pressure exerted on the opposite end of said handle is adapted to enter between the opposite ends of said lever members for gradually spreading the same for the purpose of increasing the gripping pressure of said clamping jaws at the mullion.

34, whichever may be found more practicable. a window of the type having mullions, compris- 5L ing a' base, a pair of lever members, pins upon which said lever members are pivoted for horizontal swinging movement upon said base, one of the ends of said lever members constituting clamping jaws, heads integrally formed with said pins and overlying the upper edges of said lever members, a horizontal pin passing through said heads, a handle pivoted by one of its ends upon said last named pin, a portion of said handle being tapered to define a wedge, which under manual pressure exerted on the opposite end of aid handle is adapted to enter between the opposite ends of said lever members for gradually spreading the same for the purpose of increasing the gripping pressure of said clamping jaws at the mullion, and means for bodily moving one of said lever members away from the other for the purpose of regulating the spread of said clamping jaws for fitting various Widths of mullions.
3. A device of the class described comprising a pair of lever members, pins upon which said lever members being pivoted substantially at the central portions of the latter, said pins having heads at their upper ends, a transverse horizona pair of lever members, pins upon which said lever members being pivoted, a transverse horizontal pin passing through said last named pins, and a handle pivoted by one of its ends upon said horizontal pin, a portion of said handle being tapered to define a wedge which under manual pressure is adapted to enter between the adja cent ends of said lever members for the purpose of increasing the gripping pressure of said lever members at the opposite ends thereof.
