ADJUSTABLE SHADE HOLDER.

Be it known that I, EDWIN G. I'IEATH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Concord and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Shade Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention is in the nature of an adjustableholder for window shades, and the object is to provide a simple, practical and efiicient device for supporting ordinary window shades upon the window easements. Another object is to provide such a holder in the form which may be readily and reeasably attached to any standard window frame, without the use of nails or screws and without marring the frame work. A still further object is to furnish a shade holder adapted for supporting the shade elther inside the easement or on the out- [side face thereof, or two shades at the same time, one inside and the other outside the easement.

In the drawing:

Figure 1 is an end view of one of the holders (there being one for either end of the top facing of the easement), shown with the lever bracket raised and the upper and lower aws extended for embracing the facing strip, the form of lever bracket here shown being adapted to support the shade roller outside the casement.

Figure 2 is a similar end view of the same form of holder, shown with the lever bracket depressed flat to the facing strip, and the upper and lower jaws thus-drawn uptightly into engagement with the edges of the facing strip.

Figure 3 is a frontal view of the device as shown in the end view in Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a frontal view of'the device as shown in end view in Figure 2.

Figure 5 is a detail of the upper jaw of the form of holder shown in the preceding views.

Figure 6 is a detail of the lower jaw.

Figure 13 is a detail of a. modified form of upper jaw, showing a series of transverse pins instead of the slots shown in Figure 5 and other figures.

Figure 14 is a detail of a modified form of lever bracket, showing a transverse pin mounted at the upper end, instead of a slot cut therein as representedin Figure 7 and other views.

Figure 15 is a detail of a modified form of lever bracket, showing a curtain hook substituted on the outer or lateral extension thereof in lieu of the shade supporting stem shown in Figure 12.

The invention consists of apair of jaws Iormed preferably of sheet metal, an upper jaw 1 and an offsetting lower jaw 2, each having teeth 3 adapted to grip the upper and lower edges respectively of the casement facing strip 4. If made of sheet metal, the side edges of the jaws may be turned out perpendicularly, as shown at 5, both in order to strengthen the structure and to facilitate connecting the elements together. The upper jaw shank is provided with a series of transverse slots 6 as hook-holds, or pins 7 may be substituted as shown in modified form in Figure 13, these pins being the out-turned edges 5 at each side. The lower jaw has a V-shaped recess or crotch 8 cut out at its upper end and at this same end the side edges 5 are extended and enlarged to form ears 9. A lever bracket 10, similarly formed of sheet metal and having a similar V-shaped crotch 11 at its upper end and out-turned edges 5 and cars 12, is pivoted or hinged to the lower jaw 2 by nesting the ears 12 within the ears 9 connecting the two by rivets 13; 'he bracket 10 is also provided immediately be low the crotch 11 with a transverse slot 14, or a pin 15 may be substituted, as shown in modified form in Figure 1 1-. A connecting link 16 is hinged at 17 into the slot 14 or onto the pin 15, and has its free end turned to a hook 18 which is adapted to releasably engage any one of the series of slots 6, or the pins 7, according to the form of construction adopted. The lever bracket 10 may be formed with the lateral extension 19 and a final out-turned stem 20 with the usual eye 21 for engaging the usual pivot pin in the end of the ordinary form of shade roller; and this form of construction is adapted to support the shade flatly against the outer face of the casement and so that the shade will extend laterally over the fac ings of the easement in a well known way.

This construction is illustrated in the first ten figures of the drawing. Or, as shown in Figure 11 the bracket may be formed with the inwardly and downwardly turned extension 22 and then with the same final out-turned stem 20 with eye"21 therein as shown in Figure 7; and this form of construction is adapted 'to support the shade inside the easement. Or, as shown in Figure "12, the two preceding forms may :be combined and the lever bracket provided with both the lateral extension 19'and stem 20, and also with the downward extension 22 "and stem 20, for supporting two shades, one

' outside and one inside the easement. Or,

as shown in Figure 15, a curtain hook 23 may be substituted on the lateral extension 19 of this combination form, in lieu of the shade supporting stem 20 shown in igure 12, leaving the downward and inwardly turned extension 22 for supporting a shade.

In use, the jaws 1 and 2 of the device are spread or extended by raising the lever bracket 10 as far as possible and adjusting the aws over the upper and loweredges of the facing strip 4' and then pressing the lever bracket down flat against the lower jaw, the leverage action or pull of the con necting link 16 be ng sufficient to contract or draw the-two ja'wsl and 2 'togethr and into engagement'with the facingstrip. approximate adjustment or the, device to any widthrnaybe readily had by-simply hooking the upper end or hook18 of the jconnecting link 16 into 'the required one of the slots 6, or onto one of the pins 7 of the-modified form. Of course it is understood that a holder is to be mounted at each end of the facing strip for supporting both ends of'the shade roller.

While I have herein described a certain specific" method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is series oi? transverse slots therein as hook holds, and the lower jaw having a crotch its upper end and side ears thereat; a lever bracket adapted at its lower end to support an end of a shade roller, having a crotch at its upper end, a transverse slot iniii'iedia.tely below the crotch, and side ears at the crotch nested and pivoted into the side cars of the lower jaw; and a connecting link having its lower end hinged through the slot of the lever bracket and upper end formed into a hook adaptedto.releas ably engage the upper jaw through any one of the slots thereof.

An adjustable shade holder for a casement, comprising upper and lower jaws for gripping the casement facing, the upper jaw being provided with hook-holds and the lower jaw with side ears at its upper end; a lever bracket with its lower end adapted to support an end of a shade roller and its upper end having side ears pivoted to the ears of the lower jaw; and a connecting link hinged to the upper end of the lever bracket with its upper end hooked to engage the hook holds of the upper jaw.

An adjustable shade holder for a case Inent, comprising upper and lower jaws for gripping the casement facing; a lever bracket hinged to the lower jaw and adapted to sup- 20 port one end of a shade roller; a connecting link hinged by one end to the lever bracket; and means for releasably locking the free end of the connecting link to the upper aw.

7. An adjustable shade holder for a casement, comprising upper and lower jaws; a lever bracket hinged to the lower jaw and having a laterally turned extension for supporting an end of a shade roller outside the casement, and an inwardly and downwardly turned extension for supporting an end of another shade roller inside the casement; a connecting link hinged by one end to the lever bracket; and co-operative means embodied on the connecting link and upper jaw for releasably locking the free end of the connecting link to the upper jaw.
