1 Claim.

My invention relates to improvements in mats or the like, and has particular reference to one which is adapted to be attached to a receptacle.

Briefly stated, the invention has for its primary object to provide a novel device of this character which is especially suitable for goblets or other drinking vessels which are characterized by a flared plate-like base from which projects upwardly a stem of reduction carrying or forming a part of the receptacle itself,-the nature of the invention being such that it will protect a table or other supporting surface upon which the receptacle may be placed against such moisture as may be present upon the base of the receptacle.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a mat of this kind which is very simple and inexpensive in construction, and which may be readily slipped upon or removed from the base of a goblet or similar vessel, but which is so formed as to assure of its remaining in place while the vessel is being handled by the stem or reduction.

The foregoing and other objects are attained by means of a novel combination and arrement of structural features, such as illustrated in the accompany drawing, wherein:-,-= 3

Referring to the drawing by reference characters numeral 8 designates a conventional goblet base having a stem 4. 7

The mat which is the subject oi the present invention comprises the superimposed portions 9, lo,they being preferably of papersuch as crepe paper or the like although other materials may be used. The portion 10 is preferably shaped to generally conform with the shape of the base i of the goblet, except, however, that such portion 10 will be dimensioned slightly oversize with respect to the goblet base 8.

The mat portion 9, as shown, is secured at its edges to the mat portion 10 except for an area whose width is about equal to the diameter or maximum width of the goblet base 8.

In carrying out the invention the means for securing the mat portions 9, 10, together will pref erably be an adhesive 6. Preferably the ad:-

hesively secured edge portions of the members 9, 10, will lie flush or substantially so, The ad= heslvely secured edges may be scalloped as illus trated so as to give the mat an ornamental and pleasing appearance.

Numeral ll indicates what might be termed the forward edge of the mat portion 9 and it is free with respect to mat portion 10 as heretofore explained. Extending inwardly from the edge 11 of mat portion 9 is the key slot 12 whose neck portion ill will preferably be slightly narrower than the diameter of the goblet stem 7 so as to assure of the maintenance of the stem in the enlargement 12o at the inner end of slot 12,it being observed that the enlargement 12a of said slot is located approximately at the center of the mat so that the base 8 of the goblet will be properly centered with respect to the mat.

in order to facilitate insertion of the goblet base 8 through the slot 12 into the pocket provided by the mat portions 9, 10, I preferably dis-= pose the tree edge ll of mat portion 9 inwardly of the adjacent edge of mat portion 10. Thus the goblet base may be disposed upon the portion of part it that extends beyond the edge ll of part 9,

and then simply slid into the assembled position shown. The neck portion of the slot 12 will, as previously pointed out, tend to prevent the stem from Jim outwardly from the slotted enlargement' so that the mat will remain in place during the usual handling of the goblet by the stem 7.

Having thus described my invention, what i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A mat for goblets and the like comprising super imposed sheet-like members having their super= o5 imposed peripheral edges secured to each other in liatwise relationship to provide a goblet basereceiving pocket, one of said members having an edge unsecured to and inwardly of the periphery of the second member defining an'entrance to said pocket for ready insertion of the goblet base therein, and a slot formed in said first member extending from the unsecured edge thereof, the slot terminating in an enlarged goblet stem receivingopening.
