" 444-4; 4 Ms) ATTORNEY6 NEPEIERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHEE WASHINGTON. D- c- UNITED STATES MARRION E. KIME, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
IOWA COUNTY, IOWA.
IMPRI DVEMENT IN FENCE-WIRE STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 193,005, dated July 10, 1877; applicationfiled April 21, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN W. S. KIME, of Victor,'in the county of Iowa and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wire-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had a to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my wire-stretcher. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a clamp for holding wires on fences while tighteningthe same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, which fully illustrates my invention, A represents the clamp, having its ends formed in dovetailed shape, as shown, to be inserted in a correspondingly-shaped groove, formed in a lever of any suitable length.
This clamp orblock may be fastened to said lever by bolts instead of the dovetails, for which purpose holes a a are made in the same; or it may be fastened by both bolts and the dovetails.
In the clamp or block is a slot or mortise, d, in which is inserted a sliding key-block, B, which is movable out and in to close a groove, d, made in the face of the clamp, into one end of the mortise d, as shown. The key- -block B is held from coming out of the clamp by means of a pin, 12, passing through the clamp into a groove, f, on said key-block.
On the front edge of the block B is formed a round projection, h, and a corresponding recess, t, is made in one end of the mortise d. and groove (1- Back of the key block B is inserted a wedge-shaped key,'0, and the back end of the mortise d is made inclined to correspond with the inclination of the key 0.
When a fence-wire is to be stretched, one end thereof is, of course, made fast to the fence-post. The other end is placed through the groove d in the mortise d of the clamp, and by a tap on the key 0 the block B is forced forward so that the round projection h will force the wire into the recess 11 and hold or clamp it firmly. The lever is then applied to the fence-post to stretch the wire, and when stretched the wire is fastened to this post by the usual staple or other suitable fastening. The wire is then released from the clamp, and the clamp applied on another wire, and so on.
The projection h and recess '5 being rounded, the wire will not ened in the clamp and stretched, but simply bend in the same.
What I claim as new, by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a clamp for stretching wire, the sliding key-block B, provided with a rounded projection, h, in combination with a wedgekey, and the clamp-body, having the concave recess 2', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the clamp A, having mortise d and grooves 01, and applied to a lever, as described, the sliding key-block B and wedge-key O, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WARREN W. S. KIME.

and desire to secure ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO get broken when fast-.
