This invention relates to steam generators and boilers and has reference to devices preventing priming and for promoting water circulation therein. Generally speaking, bafiie devices for this purpose are known but the device of the present invention is novel form and construction as hereinafter described.
An object therefore of the present invention is to provide a steam generator or boiler with a novel form of baiiie device for preventing priming and promoting water circulation.
A further and more specific object is to provide a steam generator. or boiler with a submerged baffle device in the form of a plate extended substantially throu out he whole length of the drum' but having openings, i. e. apertures or spaces adjacent its ends, or spaces between its ends and the drum ends and also at or near, 1. e. in the region 0i,- its longitudinal edges alongside the curvedwall of the drum to allow of the escape of steam.
A still further object is to improve the action of water tube boilers, by providing my bafile device in the steam drum th reof in such a position as to cooperate functionally with the water circulation tubes of such boilers. My bafile device is so disposed as to prevent priming and to assist the natural thermo-circulation system by directing the stream of rising hot water (which surges into the drum from the circulation tubes) into a controlled or regulated course and thereby avoid-the excessive swirl or turbulence liable to take place in the region of entry of the hot water stream from the circulation tubes, which swirl or turbulence normally prevents the steady and rapid circulation of water within the In combination with the upfiowing group of circulation tubes I provide upward extensions reaching to the underside of the bafile plate as hereinafter described. a
Another object is to provide a water bafiie device of sectional construction in order to facilitate erection and replacement. The sections may be arranged longitudinally side by side in two or more rows or transversely as a single row. Transversely disposed sections can be conveniently formed to be self-supporting, whilst the arrangement of longitudinally dis posed sections necessitates the employment of transverse bearers. The disposition, as to height and inclination, of the baffle plate as a whole will naturally vary with the type of boiler and the position of the drum within which it is fitted.
The above objects and such others as are incidental thereto or hereinafter appear will of a Babcock water tube boiler showing my now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view illustrative of the steam and water drum baffle plate in position.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan view-thereof, and
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section through the drum of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view illustrative of a modified construction of the baflle.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line V-V of Figure 4.
In carrying out the invention, and referring first to Figures 1, 2, and 3, reference numeral 1 represents the single substantially horizontal steam drum passing from front to rear of the boiler, 2 the series of rearwardly inclined heater tubes spanning between the front and rear headers which are connected by upflowing circulation tubes 3 and downflowing circulation tubes to the respective ends or the steam drum disposed above.
The baffle plate is constituted by twelve sections 5, longitudinally disposed and arranged in four groups of. three. Each of the three rows constituting a group of four sections is supported at opposite ends by transversely disposed bearers 6 which span the drum 1 in chord-like manner. The bearers 6 are conveniently'iormed of bars of metal with downturned ends 7 which are bolted or otherwise secured to the wall of the drum 1. Each section 5 is strengthened against bending'or sagging by a bar 8 (conveniently of half round section) bolted, riveted or welded one on each side of the section upon which it is centrally and longitudinally disposed. At the point of support upon the bearers 6 the sections 5 of one row overlap thoseoi the adjacent row. A longitudinal steam opening 9 is left on each side of the composite plate. The bearers 6 are arranged progressively higher so that the baiile plate as a whole is upwardly inclined from the inf-lowing circulation tubes 3. Spaces 10 and 11 are also left between the ends of the baiile plate and the respective ends of the drum.
In a modified arrangementemploying a single row of transversely disposed sections and as shown in Figures 4 and 5, each section 5 is formed with a central gap 15 at each end, so as to form two tongue-like members .16. These members 16 are downturned from about the middleof their length to constitute surfaces 1'? for bearing against the wall of the drum 1, whilst leaving a space at each end of the section for the escape of steam.
Each section 5 is furnished with two strengthening bars 8, one at each end thereof, the ends of which bars 8 overlap, if desired, on to the adjacent section 5. If desired a number of sections 5 may be joined together by means of some such strengthening bars 8.
In combination with the bailie plate I use a series of tubular ch'culators. These circulators or tubes form, as shown in Figure l, extensions of the customary upflowing circulation tubes 3 from the headers of the boiler to the steam drum and are secured to the underside of the neighbouring bafiie section 5. Each tubular circulator consists of a tube 12 which depends into a circulation tube 3, and is provided with an upper flanged portion 18 by means of which it is secured to the underside of the baliie, and the tube 12 is formed with a lip affording an opening 14 for the lateral egress of the hot water passing up from the header, said lipped'opening facing the direction of travel of the stream and being under the bafile.
What I claim is:-
1. In a multiple water-tube boiler, the combination with a steam drum composed of a circular wall and front and rear ends, of circulation tubes for leadng upfiowing water to the front end of the drum, circulation tubes for leading downfiowing Water from the rear end ofthe drum, a sectionally-assembled flat baffie plate extending submerged substantially throughout the length of the drum but having spaces between its ends and the drum ends and also between its longitudinal edges and the circular wall of the drum, and upward extensions of the upflowing circulation tubes of said drum, said upward extensions having flanged upper ends for attachment to the underside of the baffle plate and having lateral delivery towards the other end of the drum, and said bafiie plate as a whole being slightly inclined upwardly from the water inflowing end of the drum to the Water outfiowing end 2. In a multiple water-tube boiler, the combination with a steam drum composed of a circular wall and front and rear ends, of circulation tubes for leading upfiowing water to the front end of the drum, circulation tubes for leading downflowing water from the rear end of the drum, a flat-bafile plate extending submerged substantially throughout the length of the drum but having spaces between its ends and the drum ends and also between its longitudinal edges and the circular wall of the drum, and upward extensions of the upfiowing circulation tubes of said drum, said upward extensions having flanged upper ends for attachment to the underside of the bailie plate and having lateral delivery towards the other end of the drum, and said bafile plate as a whole being slightly inclined upwardly from the water infiowing end or" the drum to the water outilowing end.
3. In a multiple water-tube boiler, the combination with a steam drum composed of a circular wall and front and rear ends, of circulation tubes for leading upfiowing water to the front end of the drum, circulation tubes for leading downfiowing water from the rear end of the drum, a flat baille plate extending submerged substantially'throughout the length of the drum but having spaces between its ends and the drum ends and also between its longitudinal edges and the'circular wall of the drum, and upward extensions of the upflowing circulation tubes of said drum, said upward extensions reaching to the underside of the baflle plate and having lateral delivery towards the other end of the drum, and said bafile plate as a whole being slightly inclined upwardly from the water infiowing end of the drum to the water outflowing end.
