Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1919.
Original application filed. June 21, 1915, Serial No. 35,294. Divided and this application filed February 10, 1916. Serial No. 77,516.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES RADIGUER, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at St.-Denis, Department of the Seine, in France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headers for Boiler Elements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present application is a division of my copending application, Serial No. 35,294, filed June 21, 1915, and relates to the construction of headers or boxes for the elements of water tube boilers. Th present invention relates more particularly to the construction of upper headers for establishing communication between the upper tubes of the element and the purifier.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved form of upper header so constructed that as the water and steam are admitted to the header by the upper tubes of the coils, the currents in the upper header will all be directed upwardly, thus insuring a direct path for the water and steam from the outlet of each tube to the outlet of the header. By thus directing all of the currents upwardly through the header, the tendency for vortexes to form within the header is eliminated.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which z- Figure 1 is a vertical section through the improved upper header taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper header and a portion of the upper tubes of the element connected therewith.
The upper header illustrated in the drawing is designed for use with an element having four coils, but it will be understood that slight modifications may be made to the header to adapt it for use with elements of a different number of coils, without departing from the seope of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the header is denoted generally by the reference character A and is adapted to be connected at a to the pipe which communicates with the purifier. The header is provided with four compartments, indicated at 1, 2, 3 and 4, into which the upper tubes 25, 25 t and t of the four coils discharge. It will be understood that the tube t discharges into the compartment 1, the tube 25 into the compartment 2, i into the compartment 3, and the tube t discharges into the compartment 4. When the header is used for an element having a different number of coils, the number of compartments arranged in the header will be changed to conform with the number of coils in the element.
The compartments 1, 2, 3 and 4 discharge into a lateral passage 5 through openings 6, 7, 8 and 9, respectively. It will be noted that the compartments 1, 2, 3 and 4 are formed by the provision of vanes or ribs 10, 11 and 12, which are so disposed that they cooperate with the openings 6, 7 8 and 9 to direct the current from each of the tubes upwardly, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1. As all of the currents in the header are directed upwardly in this manner, the formation of vortexes within the header is prevented and the passage of the water and steam through the tubes of the element and through the header to the purifier is, therefore, made more uniform.
What I claim is 1. An upper header for water tube boiler elements, having ribs extending inwardly and upwardly from one side wall thereof and forming compartments which are open at the top, one end wall of the header having inlet tube-receiving openings alined with the compartments, said header having a pas sage with which all of the compartments communicate, the passa e being arranged between the ribs and the slde opposite to that by which said ribs are carried. p
2. An upper header for water tube boiler elements, having a plurality of ribs extend in g inwardly and upwardly from one side the said header having alateral passage with wall thereof, said ribs cooperating to form which each compartment communicates. 10 coniipai-tniilenitls, eiachhopen at its top]; one end In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. wal 0 t e ea er aving in et tu e-receiving opening alined with the compartments CHARLES RADIGUER the distance of the openings of said com- Witnesses: V
