10 Claims. (o1. 22-5s My inventionrelates toa babbitting machine and particularly to one for applying semi-linings to connecting rods or similar bearing members.
The object of my invention is to produce a machine for the purpose named which will be inexpensivein construction and simple in operation and which will insure the formation of a perfect lining.
'In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a babbitting machine made in accordance with my'invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation, the housing being shown'in section; Figure 2 is a front elevation, the housing being shown in section; Figure 3 is an enlarged front view of the upper part of the machine; Figure 4 is partly a top plan View and partly a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1; Figure 5 is an enlarged section taken on the line 5--5 of Figure 4; Figure 6 is an enlarged elevation and plan of the core; Figure 7 is a bottom plan view and section of the upper semi-annular mould; Figure 8 is a top plan View and section of the lower semi-annular mould; and Figure 9 is a viewsimilar to Figure 5 but showing amodified form of core.
' Referring first to Figures 1 and 2, the base of the machine is formed of a housing 1 to which is pivoted at 2 a supporting plate 3 carrying a motor 4 and vibrator casing 5 within which is a cam 6 driven by the motor 4. The cam is adapted to impart vibratory motion to a rod "7 which, however, is normally held out of contact with the cam by a spring 8. Positioned directly over the rod 7,and just out of contact therewith, is a rod 9 secured to the lower face of a plate 10 upon which the babbitting mechanism is mounted. A
bent lever 11 is pivoted to the housing at 12 and provided at one end with a treadle 13. The other end is connected by a link 14 to the plate 3 so that when the treadle is depressed the end of plate 3 is raised to cause the end of the rod 7 to contact with the rod 9, forcing the first named rod against the cam so that vibratory motion is im-v parted to the platel0.
In order to allow the vibratory motion of the,
The connecting rod 28to be babbitted, is positioned around the core and between: the mould members 19 and 20, as shown in Figure 5, and the parts areheld in position by clampingmechanism'hereinafter to bedescribed; v Carried adjacent'to one side of plate 10 are a post 30 and a post 31 forming guides for sliding bars 32 and 33. The bar 32carries on its forward end a clamping fiange 34' adapted toengagei with the mouldmember 20, and thebar 33 carries atits forward end a clamping finger 35 adapted to engage with the member 19. The latter finger is connected to the bar by a swivel joint 36 so as to compensate for variations in theiithickness of the bearings babbitted, and, also to allow it to swing up into the position shown in-Figure 4' to facilitate the assembly of the parts of the mould and the bearing to be lined. Bars 32 and 33fare moved longitudinally by a yoke 37 acting through cell springs 38. This cross bar isv c'onnectedby a link 39 with an operating lever 40.
with clamping fingers43 for, engagement with the connecting rod or other bearing to be lined.
' The forward end ofthe bars are guided in slots 44 in the supportl'l so as to allow of adjustment of the distance between the fingers43 to accom modatebearings of different width; The bars 42 j 90 are moved longitudinally by-iayoke 45 acting through coil springs 46., The connection of the bars with the yoke is made by slots 47 to permit of the movement of the bars toward and away from each other; The-yoke 45 is connected'by a link 48 with an operating handle 49. Securedto the support 17 by bolts 50 is-an upright 51;; R0 tatably. mounted in the upright are a pair of internally threaded 1 sleeves :52 v provided with knurled-heads 53 and engaging with threaded stems 54 and 55, respectively. Carried on the stem 54 is an upper guide bar 56 and on the stem 55 a lower guide bar 57. Sliding in these guide bars are clampingbars 58, the ends of which are adapted to bear upon the upper face of the mem-' ber 19. I Slots are provided in the guide bar 57 to allow of the movement of the'clainpingbars toward and away from each other and this movementis regulated by set screws 59. A yoke 60, acting through coil springs 61, moves the clamping'bars 58.- This yoke is provided with s1ots'62 (Figure 3) to permit of the lateral movement of the clamping bars, therefore, to prevent lateral movement of the yoke when it is actuated, I prefer to provide auxiliary bars .63 extending: between bars 56 and 57 to guide it. The yoke 60 isconnected by a link 63 with an operating lever 65.
In Figure 91 have shownamo'dification' in 'Which'a core 18'. not provided with a flange," is
used instead of the flanged core previously described. In this construction the filler block 23' is made thicker and the member 20 rests upon it instead of upon the core flange.
In using my machine the connecting rod or other bearing is positioned around the core between the mould members 19 and 20, as shown in Figures 5 and 9, and the posts are clamped in position by operating the levers 40, 49 and .65.
' bination with a support, of a core carried thereby, a pair of mould members adapted to be placed against said support one at each side of the bearing to be lined, clamping means engaging with the bearing lugs for holding the bearing against said support, clamping means arranged above and below said first named means and engaging the mould members for holding said mould members against said support, clamping means engaging the upper face of the top mould member and operating substantially at right angles to said first named clamping means for holding the bearing and mould members together, and means for vibrating said support while the bearing is being lined.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a support, of a core carried thereby, a pair of mould members adapted to be placed against said support one at each side of the bearing to be lined, -a pair of independently movable clamping fingers engaging with said bearing one at each side of the core, common operating connections for both fingers, and equalizing means in said connections for compensating for inequality in the bearing engaged by the fingers.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a support, of a core carried thereby, a pair of mouldmembers adapted to be placed against said support one at each side of the bear-, ing to be lined, a pair of clamping bars provided.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a support, of a core carried thereby, a pair of mould members adapted to be placed against said support one at each side of the bearing to be lined, a clamping means engaging with the bearing lugs for holding 'the bearing against said support, a pair of longitudinally movable clamping bars, fingers carried by said bars and adapted to engage with said mould 'members' above and below the bearing, one of said fingers being swiveled to swing upwardlyand laterally away from the member with which it cooperates, and means for moving said bars longitudinally to engage said fingers withsaid mould members.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a support, of a core carried thereby, a pair of mould members adapted to be placed against said support one at each side of the bearing to be lined, clamping means engaging with the bearing lugs for holding the bearing against said support, a pair of clamping bars, a pair of fingers carried by said bars for engaging with said mould members above and below the bearing, one of said fingers being swiveled to its bar, a yoke for actuating said bars, a spring interposed between each of said bars and the yoke, and an operating lever for said yoke, whereby the bars are simultaneously and differentially actuated.
