12 claims. (ci. 155-43) The object of` our invention is to.r provide a combined chair and ironing boardv which is simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. x v
A further object of our invention is to provide a chair formed of elements `which maybe readily extended from their normal position to a position serving as an ironing board, supporting elements for the ironing board being foldable, collapsible and slidable relative to the frame of the device so that they can all be concealed within the frame when the device is used as a chair.
More particularly, it is our object to provide a combined chair and ironing board consisting of a chair frame with a back element and a seat ele-Y ment hinged together Vand arranged to swing forwardlyto a substantially level position to serve as an ironing board, suitable supporting means being normally folded within thechair frame and ca- ,pable of extension to a supporting position for the -element r provide an ironing board of practical length and an intermediate supporting element.

With these and "other objects in view our in-v vention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the Various parts of our device, whereby the objects'contemplated are at' tained as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed `oui'l in our claims and illustrated in theY accom-k panying drawing, in which:

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional View on the line A540i Figure 2 showing the parts collapsed, however, instead of in the extended position of Figures 1 and 2; and
Figure 5 is a perspective View showing the parts in their normal or chair forming position.
On the accompanying drawing, we have used 60 the reference character A to indicate generally a. chair frame. The frame A consists of side frame elements 10, front cross frame elements 12 and a. rear cross frame element 14.
Pivoted at 16 .to the upper ends of the side frames is a back'element 18. Hinged at 20 to the lower end of the back element 18 is a seat element 22. A seat extension element 24 in turn is hinged at its forward edge to the forward edge of the seat element 22, as indicatedat 26. The elements 13, 22 and 24 are adapted to form an ironing board or 'surface'when in their extended position, as will hereinafter be more fully described.
Hinged at 23 to the cross Vtar 12 of the chair 75 frame is an intermediate supporting element 25. Its rear end normally rests on a cross bar of the chair frame.
Slidable on side bars 28 is a slide element 30.
It consists of apair of side bars and a cross bar ,80, 30a. Pivotedat 32 to the slide element 30 is a slide extension' element 34.
' Hinged to the slide extension element 34, as at 36, is a depending post element 38. It is provided with a cross bar 38a to which is hinged at 40, 85 an upstanding primary post'element 42. Hinged at 44 to the post element 42 is a secondary upstanding post element 46.
Hinged at 48 to the cross bar 12 of the chair frame is a closure panel or door 50. It is adapted to be closed when the ironing board is collapsed and the device is used as a chair, as shown in Figure 5.
This completes the description of the parts of our combined chair and ironing board with the n exception of `a few fastening elements which will be described under the following heading.
: Practical operation Referring to 4Figures 4 and 5, it will be noted 100 that the elements 18, 22,24, 30, 34, 38, 42 and 46 are all in collapsed or folded position and that the door 50 encloses the elements 30, 38, 42 and 46. When it is desired to use the device as an J Weclaim as our invention:
The elements 34, 38, 42 and 46 can then be unfolded to the dotted line position of Figure 1 5 and then further unfolded to their fully extended position as shown by full lines. To retain them in this position, the following described fastening means is utilized.
An ordinary hook such as usedon a screen door and its coacting screw eyes areindicated at 52 for holding the elements 38 and 42 rigid with respect to the forward end of the element 34. The cross bar 38a being set lower` than the upper edge of the element 34 provides a shoulder to assist in limiting the'elements 38 and 42 to a right angle position with respect to the element 34. v
A turn button 54 is utilized to keep the elements 42 and 46 in alinement witheach-other and e. hook 56-and its coacting screw eyes are usedto secure 29 the upper end of the element 46 to the element 42. Thus the rironing board, consisting of the elements 18, 22 and 24, is effectively supported intermediate its length by theelement 24 and at its outer en dby theelements 38, v 42 and 46, which 25,3 when extended form a post member. Y
The upper end of the element :46 is provided with a dowel adaptedto selectively enter openings 58 of the element 24. For instance, a full line and a dotted line position are shown in Fig- 3Q,;ure 1. A plurality of screw eyes is provided for the hook 56 to accommodate the post member in any of its three adjusted positions. The slide element 30, of course, permits `such adjustment since it merely slides into the chair frame when 35,the post member is adjusted toward the frame.,

In a combined chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a back element pivoted to the upper end thereof, a seat element hinged at its back: edge to the lower edge ofv said back element, a seat extension element normally positioned beneath said seat element and hinged to the forward edge thereof and means for supporting said three elements in a substantially level position extending forwardly from said chair frame, said means including a slide element slidably mounted in said chair frame and a collapsible post for supportingly engaging said seat extension element, said post being normally collapsed to a position on said slideelement and supported there.
4. In a combined chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a back element pivoted to the upper end thereof, a seat element hinged at its back edge Yto the lower edge of said back element, `a seat extension element normally posiiv tioned beneath said seat element and hinged to the forward edge thereof and means for supporting said three elements in a substantially level position extending forwardly from said chair frame, said means including a slide element supported on said chair frame, a slide extension element hinged thereto and normally supported thereby and a collapsible post member normally collapsed and supported by said slide element, said post member in its extended position supportingly coacting with said seat extension element.

In a combined chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a back element pivoted to the upper end thereof, a seat element hinged at its back edge to the lower edge of said back element, a seat extension element normally positioned beneath said seat element and hinged to the forward edge thereof,- means for supporting said three elements ina substantially level position extending forwardly from said chair frame, said means including a slide element slidably mounted in said `chair frame and a collapsible post for supportingiy engaging said seat extension element, said post being normally collapsed to a board, a`

In a combination chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a back element and a seat element connected with said chair frame and extensible forwardly from the backof said frame to a horizontal position serving as an Vironing board and collapsiblev means normally positioned yWithin said chair frame below said seat element to support said ironing board when said collapsible means is in its extended position, a portion of said means being confined for horizontal sliding movement only and another portion thereof being hinged to the outer end of said first portion and extensible to a vertical supporting position.

In a combination chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a back element and a seat element connected with said chair lframe and extensible forwardly from the back of said frame to a. horizontal position serving as an ironing board, collapsible means normally positioned within said chair frame below said seat element to support said ironing board when said collapsible means is in its extended position, a portion of said means being horizontally slidable and another portion thereof being hinged to said first portion and extensible to a vertical supporting position and means for causing coaction of said second portion at different distances from the outer end of said back element and said seat element when extended to ironing position.

In a combined chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a back element pivoted to the upper end thereof, a seat element hinged at its back edge to the lower edge of said back element, a seat extension element normally positioned beneath said seat element and hinged to the forward edge thereof and means for supporting said three elements in a substantially level position extending forwardly from said chair frame, said means including an intermediate supporting element normally positioned below said seat element and said seat extension element and hinged at its forward edge to said chair frame, said means including a slide element slidably mounted in said chair frame and a post member connected with said slide element and selectively detachably connected with said seat extension element at different distances from the forward end thereof. l

In a combined chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a back element pivoted to the upper end thereof, a seat element hinged at its back edge to the lower edge of said back element, a seat extension element and means for supporting said elements in a substantially level position extending forwardly from said chair frame, said means including a slide element slidably mounted in said chair frame and a post member connected with said slide element and detachably connected with said seat extension element.

In a combined chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a back element pivoted to the upper end thereof, a seat element hinged at its back edge to the lower edge of `said back element, a seat extension element and means for supporting said elements in a substantially level position extending forwardly from said chair frame, said means including a slide element slidably mounted in said chair frame and a collapsible post for supportingly engaging said seat extension element, said post being normally collapsed to a position on said slide element and supported thereby.

In a combined chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a back element pivoted to the upper end thereof, a seat element hinged'at its back edge to the lower edge of said back element, a seat extension element, means for supporting said elements in a substantially level position extending'forwardly from said chair frame, said means including a slide element slidably mounted in said chair frame and a collapsible post for supportingly engaging said seat extension element, said post being normally collapsed to a position on saidrsli'de element and supported thereby and an openable door in the front of said chair frame for concealing said slide element and collapsible post when they are slid to position within said chair frame. i
