It has been customary to construct the entire boiler shell of boiler plate and to hold the inner and outer walls of the fire-box together by means of staybolts, additional braces being disposed di tion of the boiler walls because ofjthe high pressure existing in the boiler.

In the preferred form "of the invention the boiler backhead 1 and fireebox door sheet Zcomprise a single casting forming awater and steam header. Backhead 1 and fire-box door sheet 2 are braced by verticalribs 3 provided with openings 4 atf intervalsto facilitate the circulation of water and steam and for molding purposes;
The lower portions of members land 2 are joined by an integral element 5 which formsa mud ring section and is provided with cored openings 6 I through which the-core sand maybe removed and,
into which suitable plugs'ii may be inserted and utilized for cleaning out the mud 'ring at intervals. A continuoustransverse connection Vibe- -tw'een the inner 'and outer members forms a, door lOand 11 project lengthwise of the boiler,-1and the fire-box boiler plate sheets 12 and 13 are secured to theseflanges by welding as indicated t the backhead 1 and, with a flange 15, consti tutes a transverse girderjreinforcing the upper portion .of the backhead. This web is perforated topermit the passage of the fstaybolts 16 between the fire-box crown sheet 13 and the boiler roof sheet 12.
To facilitate the mounting of equipment on the backhead, the latter is provided with suitable pads, brackets, etc. including a pad 1'? for mounting the throttle lever 18; pads 19 and 20 for mounting the support 21 for the turret handle rods 22; a'pad' 23 for mounting the water column 24; a bracket 25 for mounting the duplex air gauge 26 and steam chest pressure gauge 27;
pads 28 for wash out plugs 29; a bracket 30 for the feed water heater gauge 31 and steam gauge 32; a bracket 33 for the force feed lubricator 34; brackets 35 for the stoker operatingrrod 36; a bracket 3'7 for the stoker steam jet and driving engine gauges 38; a bracket 39 for the brake valve 40; brackets 41 for the power reverse lever 42; a bracket 43 for the automatic brake valve 44; and brackets 45 for mounting thebutterflyupper portion of the head includes an integral which the fire-box; door sheet '70 is not cast flange 53 forming a socket for receiving the dry pipe 54 and also includes a superheater header 55 extending substantially entirely across the front head and forming a reinforcement for the same which eliminates the necessityof a separate reinforcingweb corresponding to the'web 14 of the backhead and, incidentally, eliminating the necessity for diagonal braces between the front head and the boiler sheet 52. The lower portion of the front head may be machined front and back and the flue holes are .eitherpunched or drilled therein so that the flues can be secured to the head in the usual manner. Preferably the front head is cast in one piece and i'ncludessuperheater header 55 and adual throttle valve housing 56.
This projecting'structure will include superheated steam passages 57, wet steam passages 58, reinforcing ribs 59 and suitable brackets 60 for mounting the operating cam 61. The side of the smoke box will be depressed as indicated at 62 to provide a mounting forithe operating shaft 63 for the throttleand the upper portion of the box will depart from thecircular form as indicated at 64 and accommodate theupwardly, projecting portions of the superheater header and associated structure.
Figure 1'7 illustrates :a modified structure in with the backhead 7 1.but constitutes a'separate boiler plate corresponding to the usual fire-box door sheetn At the door, this plate is curved outwardly to meet theinturned flanges '72 on the backhead and-to unite therewith, to form the door opening.-
In this structure the ribs between the inner and outer members of the rear header are eliminated and the usual staybolts 73 are utilized.
In the modification shown in Figures 18, 19 and 20, the inner and outer members 74 and 75, respectively, are integral with each other and are braced by a plurality of relatively short horizontal ribs 76 scattered throughout the header. Otherwise this structure corresponds substantially to that shownin Figures 1 and 3, it being understood that the numerous pads and brackets shown in Figure 3 may be included in this and other modifications of the invention. In Figures 21, 22 and 23,,th'ere is illustrated a modified front .head in which the superheater header is eliminated. The main vertical wall 80 is braced by a web 81 having flanges 82 at its inner end and extending across the head from side to side.
An inwardly extending circular flange 83 serves to mount the dry pipe and bolting flange 84 may be provided along that portion of the top of the head which is so close to flange 83 that there would not be enough room to insert rivets through the inner flange 85.
In all of the forms of the invention, it will be seen that a rigid boiler head structure is provided which is capable of resisting the distortion due to high boiler pressures and which makes possible the formation therewith of additional equipment which heretofore has been manufactured separately and assembled with the heads only by difiicult machining and assembling operations.
Obviously many of the elements illustrated and described may be omitted from the structure, if desired, and many of the features may be varied to suit particular conditions and we contemplate'the exclusive use of all modifications which come within the scope of the claims.
. We claim:
-1.-In a locomotive boiler, an integral cast structure comprising a back head member having its edges bent over and arranged to form the corners between said member and the boiler wrapper sheet, a fire box rear sheet adjacent the lower portion of said member, ribs connect- ,member are of sufficient rigidity to withstand boiler pressures without the use of stays to said wrapper sheet or of other braces.

An integral cast boiler structure comprising a front pressure head, the edges thereof being bent over and arranged for attachment to the boiler wrapper sheet, and an elongated hollow steam header member extending across said head and merging with said edges, said header member reinforcing said head whereby the same is sufiiciently rigid to withstand boiler pressures without the use of stays to the boiler wrapper or of other braces.
