(01. 296-48) This invention has for its object means for holding movable window sashes firmly against rattling in all positions thereof, and. particularly relates to means for holding the sashes from rattling, when projected out of a well or recess in which they are housed, when the sashes are open, and where they are unsupported except from within the body at their outer ends when open or partly open. More'particularly, the invention has for its object a door and window construction for automobiles where the sash is housed within the door body or an automobile body and is projected through the upper edge thereof and unsupported above the upper edge of the door or above the belt of the automobile body.
Another object of my invention is means for supporting the sash within the hollow body, where the well into which the sash moves is not rectangular because it has to conform to the curve of the fender of the automobile.

The tail pieces telescop e into the channels, and .the tail pieces are provided with means for coacting with the channels to hold the sash tight, not only when the sash is lowered through the slot 5 into the door body, but also when projected various distances out of the door body. As here shown, this means comprises pairs of spaced apart rollers car ried by each tail piece near the upper and lower and hence, the recesses are the spaces'enclosed by the channels.

The rollers are, mounted in suitable carriages and 'alsoare mounted to'avoldwear,- and to require very 1ittle,"if any, lubrication."
The carriages here shown include opposed plates 20 and 21 between which the rollers are mounted, floating axles between each of the plates, and-eaclrof the rollers, and means press- 1 ing ontheouter sides of the axles for holding the parts assembled in the channel or recess of the tail piece; The fioating'axles here shown are balls 22 fitting in sockets located in the center of each roller, and extending into passageways in the plates. The sockets in each roller are connected by'a passage 23 for holding the lubricant.
The means for holding the parts assembled, is here shown as a plate 24 which bears upon the outer sides of the floating axles or balls at 28,
V and which is clamped in position by a clamping member located between the two rollers.
The clamping member is here shown as a screw bolt 29 extending through the plate 24 and the plates 20,.21and threading intothe bottom of thejrec essor channelofthe tail piece. This plate 24 has some resiliency. The plate fits between the sides of the recess or guide, or tail piece, and forms a housing for the rollers, and also has angular end flanges'30 which enclose the ends of the plates 20, 21 and also at their edges meet the bottom of the channel of the tail piece. There is sufiicient clearance to permit the clamping of the plate 24 tight enough to hold'the rollers from looseness, or from binding on the balls.
Thisassernbly of the rollers is particularly sim- I ple and economical, avoiding the useof fixed axles and consequent looseness, and provides for lubrication for an'indefinite period.
The spring pressed track-18 extends along the adjacent'side of the channel- 12, is spaced apart therefrom, and is pressed against the rollers to thrust the sash, for tail pieces toward the opposit'e sides of the channel, by a plurality of springs The springs preferably encircle spaced apart studs 33 extending from the track through the adjacent side walls of the channel 12, and interposed between the track 18 and heads 34 through which the studs slide; The heads 34 are fixed to shrouds or cylindrical casings 35, the shrouds being fixed to the outer side of the channel 12. The track 18 is also formed with an angular flange 36 at its outer edge lapping the edge of the adjacent wall of the channel 12.
Each of the guides or channels l2are provided at their lower ends with a buffer or stop-37 on which the tail pieces rest when the sash is lowered to' its lowermost position into the door body. I
The pairs of rollers 13, 1'4are spaced apart so that the uppermost pairs are located asclose as possible to the upper edge of the door, when the sash is in its fully raised position; and the other pairs of rollers are located near the lower ends of the tail pieces. This arrangement particularly holds the sash against rattlingnvhen in fully ele-- vated position as well as when in any intermediate position. y,
The relative arrangement of the rollers, tail pieces and the guides, is such that they occupy a no minimum space, and are readily located in a limited space in a hollow door body, and as close a possible to the edges of the door body. The means for mounting the rollers permits them to be mounted in a limited spacaand to work without wearing, and without smearing lubricant with a minimum amountof lubrication which will last indefinitely. V
The rear edge of the rear door D conforms to the curvature of the tender B, and hence the well or openng into which the sash moves is not rectangular, and in order that the sash may be moved completely into the Well of the rear door, the guide memberor tail piece is movably connected tothe sash to shift in the planeof the sash, whenv the sash is being raised and lowered. vIt is preferably hinged to the sash and'movable along a guide following in a general way the. contour of the cutout of the rear door due to the curvature of the rear render and means is provided for making the joint rigid between the tailpiece and the sash and also for causing the tail piece to follow its guide.

provided with a downward extension 48 at its lower end which carries a pair of rollers 49, 51"
similar to the rollers 13, 14. The tail -piece;42 is hinged or pivoted at 52 to the sash or a rigid projection 53 depending from the lower edge of the sash, this'tail piece being in theform of a channel in cross sectionand the pivot extending through the opposite walls of the Channel and through the projection 53. The sides of the channel adjacent the hinge are prevented from separating by suitable fastening members as rivets 54. The upper end of the tail piece 42 thus embraces the projection 53 and this projection telescopes into the channel of the tail piece 42 and slidably fits the same, thus providing telescoping means on the sash and on the tail piece for relieve ing the hinge pin of practically all strains except pivotal or torsional strain or relieving the pivot or hinge pin of leverage strains due to the fact that the sash, when closed or out of the well of the door, is supported by the tail pieces within the door. In order to cause the tail piece .42 to follow the guide 45 during the raising and lowering of the sash,,sliding interlocking means is provided between the tail piece and its guide 45, this sliding interlocking means being here shown as a pin 56 located near the lower end of the tail piece 42 and projecting beyond one side of the same into a suitable guide provided in the channel .or guide 45.
As here shown, the pin hooks under the rear edge of the track 46, the track 46 being made to terminate short of the bottom of the channel shaped guide 45. I
In Figure 4, the track 18 meets the bottom of the channel 12 and as seen in Figure 8, the track 46 terminates short of the bottom of the channel 45,
thus providing a groove or slot for the pin 56 to slide in.
In order to further hold the door of the sash from rattling, particularly the extreme upper edge thereof, when the sash is lowered into the door body, means, in addition to the pairs of rollers 13,14 are provided, this means being stationary and not movable with the sash or the tail pieces, but being carried by the door body or the guides 12. blocks or buttons 61 having facings 620i fiber or leather and arranged in openings in the upper ends ofthe guide channels 12 and 45 and pressed by springs, as flat springs 63 secured at 64 to the outer faces of the side flanges of the channel members 12 and 45 and carrying the block 61 at their free end. Owing to the fact that these blocks are provided with fibrous or leather facings, they do not trace or leave a mark on the stiles of the sash.
Owing to the construction herein described, the
sash is noiseless and anti-rattling and thereis no felt lining to become loose and scrape off, and also owing to the tail pieces, the guides and the rollers, the sash is firmly supported, when fully open or fully closed or in any intermediate position, and owing to the pivoted tail piece 42, the sash is firmly supported in all the positions thereof when the sash goes into a Well shaped to conform to the curve of the fender of the automobile or in other words, the pivoted tail piece 42 provides means for firmly supporting a sash that lowers into a well which conforms to the curvature of a fender.
What I claim is:
l.- The combination with a supporting body, of sash guides in the form of channels mounted in the body, a sash having members movable in said guides, a pair of rollers carried by each of said members, oneroller coacting with. one wall of the channel, and a resilient track extending lengthwise of the channel and opposed to saidside This means is here shown as spring pressed wall of the 'channel an'd along which the other roller travels, the track being formed with studs extending through theadjacent side wall ofthe channel at spaced apart; points, fixed heads through which the studs slide, and springs surrounding the studs and interposed betweenthe heads and said track;
2. The combination with a supporting body; of
sash guides in the form of channels mounted in the body, a sash having members movable in said guides, a pair of rollers carried by each of said members, one roller coacting with one wall of the channel, and a resilient track extending lengthwise of the channel and opposed to said side wall of the channel, and along .which'the other roller travels, the track having anangular sages opening through the opposite side wallsof the recess toward opposite sides of the channels, a carriage mounted in each recess, rollers mounted in the carriage and projecting through the passages beyond opposite sides of said members, andengaging opposing, surfaces of eachrguide.
4. The combination of a supporting body having guides therein'in the form of channels, a sash havloo
having members movable in the channels, said members being formed with recesses having passages opening through the opposite side walls of the recess toward opposite sides of the channels,
a carriage mounted in each recess,'ro1lers mount- 1 ed in the carriage and projecting through the passages beyond opposite sides of said members, one of said rollers engaging one of the walls of the channel, and a spring pressed track along the other side of the channel'on which the other roller rolls.

The combination with a supporting body I and guides in the form or channels in the body, a sash having members movable in the guides, each of said members being in the form of a channel in cross section and formed with passages through the walls thereof, said passages opening towards opposite walls of the guide, a roller car; riag'e mounted in the channelof each of said members, and rollers carried thereby and extending respectively through said passages for coacting with the guide. The combination with a supporting body and guidesin the form of channels, a sash having members movable in the guides, each of: said members being formed with a recess and with passages opening towards opposite walls of the channel, a roller carriage mounted in'the recess and rollers carried thereby and. extending respectively through said passages for coacting with the guide member, said carriage including plates, floating axles interposed between the plates and the rollers, a cover plate thrusting opposing plates, rollers mounted between said spectively through said passages for coacting withthe guide member, said carriage including opposing plates, rollers mounted between said plates, floating axles interposed between the plates and the rollers, a cover plate thrusting ag'ainstthe outer axles, and means for clamping the cover plate in position against the outer axles, saidmeans coacting with the cover plate between the rollers.

11. The combination of a hollow body having a slot in the edge wall thereof, a sash movable from the interior of the body through, the slot beyond 'the edge of the body, and having tail pieces,
guides mounted in the body for coacting with the tail pieces, pairs of spaced apart rollers carried by the tail pieces and coacting with the guides, and tending to thrust the sash in one direction against the guides, like rollers of the pairs thrusting against like sides of the guides and the guides having spring pressed tracks coacting withthe other rollers and thrusting toward the other sides of the guides.
12. The combination of a hollow body having a slot in one edge thereof, a sash having a rigid marginal frame member} the sash being movable through the slot into, and out of the body, and
means in the hollow body for supporting and guiding the sash comprising a tail piece extending below the sash member and movably connect ed to the sash'member .to shift in the plane of the sash during the raisingv andlowering of the sash and a guide in the body coacting with the tail piece. a v 1 I a 13. The combination o'f'a hollow body having a slot inone edgethereof, a sash having a rigid marginal frame, the sash being movable through the slot into and out of the body, and meansin the hollow body for supporting and guiding the sash comprising a tail piece depending below the frame and being pivoted to the sash frame on an axis extending transversely of the plane of the sash during the raising and lowering of the sash and a guide within thebody and coacting with the tail piece. 14. The combination of a hollow body having a slot in one edge thereof, a sash having-a bottom piece, said tail piece being movable on its pivot from an inclinedposition, when the sash isjwithin the door body into a position parallel to the/direction of movement of the sash whenthe sash is moved out of the door body.
15. The combination of a hollow door body havingaslot in one edge thereof, a sash havinga marginal frame including stiles movable through the slot into'and out of the body, and means'in the hollow body for. supporting and guiding the sash, comprising a tail piece pivoted'to thesa'sh frame on an axis extending transversely of the plane of thesash during the raising and lowering of the sash anda guide within the door body and coacting with the tail piece, said tail piecebeing movable on its pivot from an inclined position,
when the sash is within the door body into a position parallel to the direction of movementof the sash when the sash is movedout of the door body, and said tail piece being in alinement with one of the stiles of the sash when the sash is moved out of the door body.
16. The combination of a hollow door body having a slot in one edgethereof, a sash having a marginal frame member, the sash being movable through the slot into and out of the body, and means in the hollow body for supporting and guiding the sash, comprising a tailpiece pivoted to the sash frame member on an axis extending transversely of the plane of the sash during the raising and loweringof the sash, a guide within the doorbody and coacting with the tail piece, and means for relieving the pivot'pin of a leverage action. r V 17. The combination of a hollow doorbodyhaving a slot in one edge thereof, a sash having a sash frame, the sash being movable through the slot into and out of the body, and means in the hollow body for'supporting and guiding the sash, comprising a tail piece pivoted to the sash frame on an axis extending transversely of the plane of the sash during the raising and lowering of the sash and a guide within the door body and coacting with the tail piece, and means for relieving the pivot pin of a leverage action, said means includ-' ing rigid telescoping parts on the sash. frameand the tail piece adjacent the pivot pin.
18. The combination of a hollow door body having a slot in one edge thereof, a sash having a ing a slot in one edge thereof, a sash including a marginal sash'franie, the sash being movable through the slot into and out of the bodyfand means in the hollow body for supporting and guiding the sash, comprising a tail piece pivoted to the sash on an axis extending transversely of the plane of the sash during the raising and lowering of the sash frame, a guide within the door 3 body and coacting with the tail piece, the tail piece and the guide having sliding interlocking means for holding the tail piece fromdislodgment from the guide during the pivotal move-- ment of the tail piece.

The combination of a hollow door body having a slot in one edge thereof, a sash including a sash frame, the sash being movable in the body through the slot into and out of the body and having tail pieces at its opposite 'edgeaguide means within the body and coacting respectively with the tail pieces, one of the tail pieces being hinged to the sash frame and the axis of the hinge pin extending transversely of the plane of the sash, and the guide coacting with the pivoted tail piece causing the tail piece to be arranged at an inclined angle and to move into a position parallel to the direction of movement of the sash when the sash is moved out of the door body,
21. The combination of a hollow door body having a slot in one edge thereof, a sash including av sash frame, the sash being movable in the body through the slot into and out of the body and having tail pieces at its opposite edges, guide means within the body and coacting respectively with the V tail pieces, one of the tail pieces being hinged to the sash frame and the axis of the hinge pin extending transversely of the plane of the sash and the guide coacting with the pivoted tail piece causing the tail piece to be arranged at an inclined angle and to move into a position parallel to the direction of movement of the sash when the sash is moved out of the door body, and means forming a rigid joint between the tail piece and the sash frame and relieving the hinge pin from other than pivotal strains. l
22. In an automobile body having the usual curved fenders'and door body, one edge of which conforms to the curve of the adjacent fender, the door body being hollow and'having a slot in its upper edge, a sash having a marginal frame,
the sash beingmovable into and out of the door body through the slot and means within the body for supporting and guiding the sash-comprising a tail piece hinged to the sash frame and a guide within the body at the edge thereof conforming to the curve in the fender, the tail piece being,
normally arranged in inclined position when the sash is lowered and to move the guide into an upright position, when the sash is elevated 23. In an automobile body having the usual curved fenders and door body, one edge of which conforms to the curve of the adjacent fender, the door body being hollow and having a slot in its upper edge, a sash movable into and out of the door body through the slot and means within the body-for supporting and g uiding'the sashcomprising a tail piece hinged to the sash and a guide within the body at the edge thereof conforming to the curve-in the fender, thetail piece being normally arranged in inclined position when the sash is lowered and to move the guide into an upright'position, when the sash is elevated, the

In an automobile body having the usual curved fenders and door body, one edge of which conforms to the curve of the adjacentfender, the body being hollow and having a slot in its upper edge, a sash movable into and out of the door body through the slot and means within the body for supporting and guiding the sash comprising a tail piece. hinged to the sash and a guide within the body at. the edge thereof conforming to the c'urve'in' the fender, the tail piece being normally arranged in inclined position when the sash is lowered and tomove the guide into an upright position when the sash is elevated; the tailpiece and the sash having means adjacent the hinge joint'connecting them for holding thetail piece rigid withthe sash and relieving the hinge pin from strains other than pivotal strains, and the tail piece and the guide having sliding interlocking means for holding the tail piece from dislodgment from the guide. v a

the sash frame having tail pieces at its front and rear edges, one tail piece being rigid-with the sash frame and in line with one of the stiles thereof, the other tail piece being hinged to the sash frame and arranged in an inclinedposition when the sash is lowered and movable into a position in line with the other stile of the'sash, guide means Within the door bodyand coacting with the tail pieces, the guide means coacting with the pivoted tail piece extending along the conforming to the curve of the adjacent fender,
a hollow door body fitting the door opening and having a slot in its upper edge, a sash movable into and 'out of the door body through the slot, the sash having tail pieces at its front and rear edges, one tail piece being rigid with the sash and in line with one of the stiles thereof, the other tail piece being hinged to the sash and arranged in an inclined position when the sash is lowered and movable into a position in line with the other stile of the sash, guide means Within the door body and coacting with the tail pieces, the guidemeans coacting with the pivoted tail piece extending along the edge of the door conforming to the curve of thefender, and means for forming a rigid joint between the pivoted tail piece and the sash and relieving'the hinge pin of strain,
the pivoted tail piece and its guide having interlocking means for holding the pivoted tail piece from dislodgment during raising and lowering of the sash.

The combination of a hollow body having a slot in one edge thereof, a'sash including a sash frame, the sash being movable through the slot into and out of the door body and means for supporting and guiding the sash comprising a tail piece pivoted to'the sash frame on an axis extending transversely of the plane of the sash dur-, ing the movement of the sash, an inclined guide within the body and coacting with the tailpiece,
during the movement of the sash, an inclined,
guide within the body and coacting with the tail piece, the sash frame being formed with a projection and the tail piece with a socket in which the projection slidably fits, the projection and socket being located near the hinge pin, and
means for causing the tail piece to follow the guide during the movement of the sash.

The combination with a supporting. body, of sash guides in the form of channels mounted in the body, a sash having members'movable in said guides, a plurality of pairs of rollers carried by each of said members and spaced apart lengthwise thereof, one roller of each pair coacting with one wall of the channel, and a track comprising; a strip extending lengthwise of the channel and opposed to said side Wall of the channel and along which track the other rollerof each pair travels, whereby the rollers of each pair coact with one side wall of the channel and with the track at spaced apart points, and springs pressing the track inwardly toward said member. w

The combination of a hollow body having a slot in the edge wall thereof, a sash movable from the interior of the body through the slot and having tail pieces, guides mounted in the body for coacting, with the tail pieces, apair'of rollers carried by each tail piece and coacting with theadjacent guide, and tending to thrust the sash in one direction against the guide, one roller of each pair thrusting against one side of the guide, the guide having a spring pressed track coacting with the other roller of that pair and thrusting against. the same.
