6 Claims.
This invention relates to automobile door and window constructions and particularly to constructions wherein the glass pane is held by a metal sash which is movable into and out of the 5 door and has for its object a particularly simple and eflicient means within the door for supporting the sash and holding it against rattling, particularly when the sash is elevated out of the door.
The invention consists in. the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a fragmentary elevation, partly broken away, of a door and sash embodying one form of this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 22, Figure 1.
3-3, Figure 1.
, Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation looking to merely necesary to bear in mind that the sash the left of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view on line 5-5, Figure 1. a
Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9 are views similar to Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 of another form of this invention.
the tail pieces when the sash is fully raised.
1 designates the hollow door body, which may be of any conventional construction, it being understood that the door body includes an outer sheeting 2 and inner removable wall 3 and a top strip 4 formed with a slot sash is movable.
5, through which the 6 designates the sash and the type here shown includes a pane of glass and also a marginal sash frame '1 usually formed up of sheet 'metal. construction of the sash forms no part of The this and in vertical alinement therewith.
The means for supporting and guiding the sash, in addition to the tail pieces which constitute portions carried by the sash, comprises channel shaped guide pieces 9 mounted in the hollowdoor and secured in position in any suitable manner as by screws 10 extending through holes in the bottom of the guides 9 into blocks 11 within the hollow door adjacent the inner and outer edges thereof. The channel shaped guide pieces 9 terminate near but are spaced apart from the upper edge. wall of thedoor body. The sash is raised and lowered by any suitable well known mechanism including rocker arms 13 actuated 'by a crank handle 14 and motion transmitting connections between the crank handle and said arms, the arms having followers 15 slidable in a groove 16 along the. lower edge of the sash. As the construction of the means for raising and lowering the sash forms no part of this invention,
and as various forms of sash mechanisms are well known, further description is thought to be un-' necessary.
Insofar as this invention is concerned, it is moves upwardly and downwardly out of and into the hollow body.
The means for holding the sash against rattling, particularly when the sash is elevated comprises compres'sion devices for holding the sash snugly in the channel shaped guide 9. a The compression devices act on the tail pieces and the sash in one direction at an angle to the plane of the sash, these compression devices being yieldingly or spring supported. The compression devices are spaced apart along the guides 9 and the tail pieces, one at the upper end of each tall piece and the other toward the lower end.
Also anti-friction-devices are provided, paired with the yieldingly' supported compression devices. Some or all the compression devices may be carried by the tail piece and thrust against the guides, or by the guides and thrust against the tail pieces. In Figures 1 to 5 inclusive they are .carried by the guides. In Figures 6, 7,8 and 9, they are carried by the sash or tail piece.
1'7 and 18 designate respectively the yieldingly mounted compression devices mounted on each guide 9 and arranged to press the sash in a direction at a right angle to the plane of the sash, each of thesecompression devices consisting of a roller preferably of fiber or some non-metallic material carried at one end of an arm 19 extending lengthwise of one side of the channel 9 and pressed toward the sash by a flat or leaf' spring 20. The flat or leaf spring 20 and the arm 19 are secured at like ends to the channel as by rivets 21. The roller of the compression device 18 works through a slot 22 in the side Wall of the channel 9.- The roller of the upper compression device is located beyond the ends of the adjacent guides or channels 9 and as close as possibleto the upper edge wall of the ,door body.
24 and 25 designate antifriction devices paired with or opposedtolthe compression devices 17, 18 and against which the sash and the tail pieces are thrust by the compression devices. These antifriction devices'include rollers similar to the rollers of the compression devices and the rollers of the antifriction devices 24 are supported by rigid brackets at the upper end of each guide channel 9 to project beyond the end of said channel and being located as near as possible to the upper edge of the door channel.
Preferably additional means are provided for acting upon the sashand one of the tail pieces to thrust the sash edgewise in one direction and antifriction members are paired with the said compression devices located at the opposite edge of the sash.
2'7 and 28 designate the compression devicescarried by one of the guides 9 as the right hand guide, Figure l, and located relatively to the sash,
the tail pieces and the guide similar to the compression. devices 17, 18, and being similar in construction to the compression devices 17, 18.
29 and 30 designate antifriction members coacting with the left hand edge of the sash and paired with the compression devices 27, 28. These are similar in construction to. the compression devices 24, 25 and similarly located with re- 'spect to the upper andlower ends of the channel guides 9.
Inoperation, the compression devices 17, 18 thrust the sash against'the inner sides of the channel members 9 and the compression devices 27, '28 thrust the sash edgewise, thus holding the sash from rattling. Owing to the location of the compression devices and their coasting with the tail pieces, the compression devices also hold the sash against rattling when in raised position and also hold the sash in position so that'it will snugly engage the door posts or pillars when the door is closed, in constructions where the sash, when elevated, closes against door posts or pillars.
By this construction; felt and rubber linings that otherwise become displaced during the raising and lowering of the window are eliminatedor if used do notbear the brunt of the sliding action of the sash when being raised and lowered as the sash is supported and guided by the compression and antifriction devices. I In Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9 the compression de.- vices arecarried by the tail pieces.
31, 32 designate the compression devices for pressing the sash in one direction at a right-angle to its plane. The devices 31, 32 are carried with- 34 and thrust againstthe-side wall of each guide other ends to the channel 35.
The compression devices 31, 32 are spring pressedrollers located within the tail pieces 33 and extending through slots 86in oneofthe side flanges of each tail piece in order .to thrust against the inner face of the side flanges of the channel shaped guides 35.. Therollers 31, 32 are'shown as carried at the free ends of flat springs 37 located within the tail piece -33 and fixed at'their side flange of the tail piece.
ingon the tail pieces and the sash to support The rollers are here shown as of the anti-friction or ball bearing type. They are paired with incompressible rollers or antifriction members 38, 39 carried within the tail pieces 83 and extending through slots 40 in the opposite side wall of the tail piece to that in which the slots 36 for the rollers 31, 32 are located.
41, 42 are compression devices for thrusting the sash edgewise in one direction as tothe left, Figure 6. These are. spring pressed ball bearing rollers carried by one of the tail pieces and thrusting against the inner face of the bottom of the channel shaped guide 35. These rollers are shown as carried by leaf springs 43 secured to the tail pieces. I
Fixed or unyielding rollers'44, 45 preferably of the ball bearing type are carried by the other tail piece that is the left hand tail piece, Figure 6, and. coact with the bottomof the left hand guide 35. The operation of the form shown in Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9 is the same as that shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive except that the rollers move up and. down with the sash, being self-contained therewith. What we claim is:
1. Inan automobile door and window construe-- ticn, the combination of a hollow door body having a slot in its upper edge, a sash movable into and out of the door through said slot, the door being provided with guide pieces in the form of channels within the same and the sash being provided with tail pieces below the lower edge of the sash and movable in said-channels, means, acting on said tail pieces at spaced apart points when the sash is raised for holding the sash from 10 rattling, said means thrusting on the tail pieces to press the same toward one side of the-channel, I and rolling antifriction means on the other side of the channel against which said tail pieces are pressed. 1 2.
