My invention relates to improvements in attachment for hair clippers, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.

An object of vmy invention is to provide anattachment for electric hair clippers which will enable the operator, whether he be a skilled barber or an inexperienced novice, to cut the hair evenly and to easily and gradually vary the depth of the out, whereby the hair maybe left short or relatively long as may be desired. y

A further object is to provide an attachment for electric hair clippers which will not become clogged or inoperable by the cut hair.

A further object is to provide an attachment for electric hair clippers `which is simple in construction, and which may be quickly and easily connected with or detached from the clipper.

Other objects and advantages will appear in of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims. Y

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of an electric -hair Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the end of a clipper showing an alternative form of my invention connected therewith, and Figure 6 is a top plan View of the attachment y shown in Figure 5, the clipper being shown in dotted` lines.

In carrying out my invention, I make use of a' conventional electric hair clipper 1 which comprises a handle portion 3 land a head portion 5. The head'portion is provided with a reciprocable cutting blade 7 which is actuated by an electrically operated mechanism disposed in the handle portion. ConductorsV 9 provide communication between the mechanism and ya power supply means, and aswitch is provided for controlling the operation of the mechanism. y

A stationary cover plate or guard 13 is connected with the head portion 5 and extends over the blade 7. The blade 7 is in sliding engage-` an enlarged detail sectional viewl ment with `the plate 13, and both' theblade and merely for the purpose of vclearly 'disclosing Ythe nature of my invention and the device with which it is adapted for use. l.

Theinvention lconsists of a body member or comb retaining member l5, which is preferably shaped as shown in Figures l and 2 and may be made of any suitable material suchras aluminum. The body member has been illustrated as beingv longer than the width ofthe plate member A13 and may be formed for providing a pair of spaced comb 19 and the plate member 13 .therebetween- The end portions 17 may have ange portions g v i 21 for providing recesses 23 for receiving the ends the following specification, and the novel lfeatures of the comb for slidably connecting thejcomb with the end portions. yIn like manner the end portions 17 may also have flange portions 25 for providing recesses 27 for receivingV the, lowermost corners ofthe plate member 13. for fixedlyy positioning the body member 15 with respect to ,the plate member 13 and also serving in part to connect thebody member with the plate member.

The'body member 1'3 is` further provided with an attachmentportion 29 for being pivotally connected with a resilient' fastening .member 31 which may bek constructed of a strip of Aspring steel. 1

The attachment vportion 29 may` be formed integral with the body member'or may be formed by connecting a4 U-shaped'member with the body member in any suitable manner. f

Due to the fact that the teeth of the comb y preferably taper from the top portion to the ends,` the lowermost position of the comb may be determined by the width of the recesses 28.

When the clipper, is used ywith my device attached, the handle 3 of the clipper is held in the hand .of the operator in a manner similar to that for holding a pencil. The comb is held substantially vertical to the surface of the head. As the comb is moved downwardly pressure may be exerted on'the handle by the operator which will result in the comb being moved upwardly with respect to the blade and the blade being moved downwardly with respect to the head, thereby increasing the depth ofthe cut.

The pressure'on the handle may be gradually increased during the travel of the comb along the rhead until the comb is moved to its uppermost position withgrespectto theblade as shown inY dotted line position inFigure 1, atwhich time the hair will be cut quiteshort.

It will be noted that'when the comb is moved upwardly with respect to end portions 17, the taper ofthe end teeth of the comb will result in the comb being loosely held by the end portions 17, thereby permitting the top portion 20 of the .comb to remain in engagement with the comb engaging portion V35, and preventing binding v therebetweenr or between the comb and the end ,portions 1'7,

When it is desired to detach my device from the clipper, the plate engaging portion 33 of the fastening member 31 is 'moved out of engagement with the end 14 of the plate.

Each of the side arms 41 has atop portion 53 andan inwardly projecting lower flange end portion 55 disposed in spaced relationship with the top portion for receiving the tapered end 57 of the plate 13 therebetween. I claim: Y

1. An attachment for hair clippers comprising a comb retaining means, a fastening member pivotally connected with the comb kretaining means for 'connecting the same with ay clipper,

and a comb connected with the comb retaining means and movable wthrespect thereto, said fastening member being provided with a comb engaging portion for yieldingly retaining the comb in a given position.

2. An attachment for hair clippers having a clipper plate comprising a comb holderl adapted to extend transversely of the clipper plate and having means for attachment to said plate com` prising forwardly extending arms provided vwith recesses for engaging the forward corners of said plate, said arms each having a guide channel therein in a plane intersecting the plane lof said plate forwardly of the forward end thereof, a

comb slidably disposed in said channels, and a resilient member carried by said holder and engaging'said comb for urging the same forwardly within said channels.

3. An attachment for'hair clippers having a clipper plate rcomprising a comb holder having Y recessed portions into which the forwardl corners of said plate are adapted to be inserted, means cooperating with said portions for detachably' securing said ,holder in `position on said plate and a member carried by said holder comprising a forwardly extending resilient comb engaging larm for yieldingly holding a comb'in a plane intersecting the plane of said plate forwardly of the forward edge thereof.
