GATE ATTACHMENT Filed Nov. 3, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 I v Q jFazzZJi. laz'z' INVENTOR WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Sept 19, 1933 Application November 3, 1930. Serial No. 493,162 l' l '1 Claim; (c1; 292-93) The object of this invention is the provision of means for unlatching a, gate and to cause the same to swing outwardly to fully open position by the contact of the front bumpers of an auto mobile with a bumper element which is associated with the latch mechanism, so that the vehicle can travel through the gateway without necessitating the occupant alightingvtherefrom and further, wherein the gate will gravitate to closed and latched position.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimedQ In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the application of my improvement.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the gate. 1 v
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail side elevation illustrating the gate in its fully open position.
While in the drawings I have illustrated my (improvement in connection with a gate it is to be understood that the same is equally adaptable to doors, especially to garage doors.
VReferring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 indicates a gate of any ordinary con- .struction, 2 a hinge post therefor and 3 the latch 7 post.
One end of the gate, at the upper edge thereof next to the hinge post 2 is provided with the socket extension 4 in which is loosely received the offset end 5 of a bolt member 6. The bolt member is passed through the post 2 and has screwed thereon nuts '7 which contact with the opposite faces of the said post 2. By this arrangement the bolt member may be longitudilnally adjusted, so that the gate canbe properly adjusted with respect to the roadway;
On its lower corner, the gate at the end thereof opposite the post 2, has fixed thereon a bracket that includes a laterally extending plate 8 .whose ends are cupped, as at 9, the said cups receiving therein rounded heads 10 on a plate 11 which is fixed to the post 2. In lieu of the members 8 and 11 a double hinge may connect the lower corner of the gate with the post 2. I
The latch post 3 has fixed thereon and extending beyond the face thereof a latch keeper mem-' spring 16;
her 14 from its keeper member 12. end or pintle 5 of the bolt memberrfi, as'stated, I
ber 12 is designed to havelnormally receive d the longitudinal rails or, the gate Land-the latch member 14 is influenced to engage with its keeper member 12 through the medium of a As disclosed by Figure 1 of the drawings the latch member 14 is movable through a substantially U-shaped guide 17 which is spaced from and secured to the outer vertical member of the gate, and the downward movement'of the latch member 14 is limited by contact with the lower wall or shoulder provided by' the substantially u shaped guide 17;
Loosely or pivotally connected to the latch member 14 is one end of a rod 18 which is guided between vertical supporting members] respect to each other, as best shown in Figure 3 2, and the other or remote ends of said links are pivoted to therouter curved ends of the upper'arms 21 of a pair of substantially U shaped buffer members 22 which are arranged whereby one buffer member is disposedon one .35
side'of the gate while the otheris disposed on the opposite side thereof so that the latching 7 means can be actuated from either side. The
upper arms 21 of the buffer members 22 are relatively long and are disposed between the lower right angle bent end of a: vertically disposed bracket 24 which is fixed to the gate, and
the upper arms 21 at their juncture with each other are pivotally connected to the upper right 10o angle bent end of the bracket 24, as-at 22'. An automobile approaching the gate from either side thereof will have its front bumpers contact with one of the buffer members 22 and 1 swing the said buffer members upon their pivots,"thus drawing on the links 20 and to exert a pull 'on the rod 18 to release the latchmem- The ofiset is loosely received in the bearing socket 4 and 7 one of the cupped members 9 of theplate 8 will no ride on.one of the rounded heads 10 of the plate"11,- thus causing the gate to be moved,
upwardly 'when the pressure imparted by the vehicle on the buffer causes the gate to be swung to open position. The gate is canted or arranged at an angle when fully opened, as disclosed by Fig. 4 "of the drawings and therefore,
will gravitate to its closed position. The latch.
member 14 will ride'over one of the archedor inclined edges of, the keeper member 12, and will thereafter, under the infiuence'of the spring 16 be forced into the notch 13 thereof.
It will be apparent from the above that the 'gate will be easily swung to an open position by a vehicle'without any attention on the part or the operator of the vehicle and that the gate Will be returned to a fully closed position and the buffer members will be set for engagement for another vehicle. satisfactory embodiment of the improvement and it is apparent that changes in the detail of construction, etc., may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as herein claimed advantages. 7 7
Having described the invention, 1 claim:
or sacrificing any of its In a gate, a latch therefor, means for actu- The above refers to one ating the latch from either side of the gate and comprising a vertically. arranged bracket fixed to the gate and having outwardly directedends disposed at right angles to the major portion thereof, aepair of substantially U-shaped buffer members a'rrangedwhereby one buffer member is disposed upon one side of the gate While the other is disposed upon the'op'posite side thereof, relatively long horizontally disposed arms for the upper ends of the buffer members and being overlapped 'with the overlapped portions pivoted to the upper bent end of the bracket, the
arms for the lower ends of the buffer members being pivoted to the lower bent end of the bracket; curved free ends for the upper arms,
