Thus by securingv the plate 14 to the-plate 13 these plates provide a stationery carrier or mounting for the twoV guide units. The guide units are operatively connected with the rack and pinion means so that by operating one `both units will be simultaneously adarticle4 of stationery `inserted inthe typewriter. It is understood, of course, that instead of using rack and pinion mechanism the pinion may be friction roller* ffctionallv engaging the bars 21, 1110 1 but the principle of operation is the same.

justed -for edging the paper, envelope or other 1n-05K The arrangement illustrated in Figures 8 to 12 inclusive is very much the same so far as principle of construction is concerned and by referring to these figures it will be observed that the main plate 29, which may be the ordinary backing plate of the existing typewriter is provided with upperand lower slots 30. The cover plate 31 has no slot in this instance except the end slot 32 which serves to accommodate the fastening 33 and spacing washers 34 (see Figure 11) The upper face of the plate 31 is provided with a suitably calibrated scale 35 to expedite paper centering. The guide units instead of being made in two parts are made from single metal stampings and are distinguished by the numeral 36. Each unit includes a horizontal rack bar 37 having an upstanding end portionv 38 carrying a forwardly and outwardly projecting guide forming ange 39 which moves longitudinally along the face of the plate 31. This is accomplished through the action of the unitary pinion 40. Generically considered it is obvious that the supporting means comprises inner and outer spaced plates with either one or the other of the plates slotted to accommodate the attaching devices for the guide unit. As seen in Figure 10 the attaching device comprises small bolt 41 having an anti-friction collar or roller 42 riding in the complemental slot of the plates 29. In both forms oi the invention the guide units are adjusted in unison through the medium of an operating connection which is preferably in the form of rack and pinion ensemble. Both styles of the invention are well balanced, economical and simple, not likely to get out of order and calculated to fulfill the requirements of an invention of this class in a -highly satisfactory manner. In the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 8 having the scale 35 the guides 29 function as indicators for cooperation with the scale digits.
It is thought that the description taken in connection with the drawings will enable a clear understanding of the invention to be had. Therefore, a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted tok if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In a double acting guide of the class described, a relatively fixed support comprising a pair of spaced parallel attaching plates, a pair of duplicate paper guide units having operating members interposed between said plates, and an operating connection between said members causing said units to be uniformly adjusted in unison.
2. In a double acting guide of the class described, a relatively fixed support comprising a pair of spaced parallel attaching plates, a pair of duplicate guide units having operating members interposed between said plates, and an operating connection between said members causing said units to be uniformly adjusted in unison, one of said plates having a xed scale with which portions of the guide units slidably cooperate for the purpose specified.
3. In a duplex guide of the class described, a main plate, a companion auxiliary plate having its opposite end portions slotted, fastenings securing said slotted e'nds of the auxiliary plate to corresponding ends of the main plate, one of said plates being provided with upper and lower guide slots, a pair of duplicate simultaneously operablel unitsfeach unit including a guide element extending at right angles forwardly beyond the auxiliary plate and having a rack bar interposed between said plates, retention and guiding means carried by the respective rack bars and cooperable with the adjacent slots, and a centrally located freely rotatable pinion arranged between the toothed portions of the Vrack bars to join said bars Vtogether in affording simultaneous adjustment of 'said units.
Yat one end constituting a guide element, the guide element being in movable contact with the front face of said front plate for cooperation with the scale, the respective rack bars being interposed between said plates and Yjoined by anti-friction guiding and sliding means with the adjacent slots, together with a centrally located pinion arranged between and 'cooperable simultaneously with the teeth of the respective rack bars for simultaneous operation of said units.
