The object of the invention is to construct the closure means for the box or container in such manner that the lid may be readily removed and again replaced without, however, the lid having the tendency to -fall oif.
This is accomplished by the fact that the edge of the box is constructed to form part of a thread, while the lid possesses a cylindrical, inwardly extending drawn-in portion, in which there is provided a groove constituting the male or counter thread.
The lid is applied to the container in the usual manner and rotated to a slight extent in relation thereto in order to ensure firm engagement between the two parts. Owing to the rotary movement the lid is pressed firmly on to the container, so that an absolutely tight closure is obtained.
In a corresponding groove or channel in the face side of the lid there may be provided a ring or washer which, when the container is closed, moves against the edge thereof and, occasioned by the threaded engagement between the lid and container, is upon the rotation of the lid compressed. By reason of the fact that merely the edge of the container is constructed to form a thread or part thereof quite a slight rotation of the lid is suflicient to hold the same in position, while on the other hand the lid is incapable of becoming wedged on the container as in the case of the known closure means.
The construction according to the invention also avoids the remaining disadvantages usually associated with a common screw connection, while on the other hand the arrangement according to the invention is of a very simple nature, and additional material for producing the thread as in the case of the ordinary screw connection is unnecesssary.
The invention will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates diagrammatically a possible form of embodiment in section.
Referring now to the drawing, 1 represents the upper section of a container having in the usual manner a neck portion 2, which may either be produced together with the container proper in one piece or may be connected therewith by folding or in other suitable manner. The upper edge 3 of the neck portion 2 is rolled over, at the same time, as clearly shown in the drawing, constituting part of a thread. The lid, which is shown in the drawing as being removed from the container, is in this particular form of embodiment shown as a lid adapted to be secured by means of a centrally extended portion 4. This portion 4 possesses an upper edge formed by a groove or channel 5. A further groove or channel 6 is impressed in the cylindrical portion 4 to form a thread conforming with the thread-constituting edge portion 3 of the neck 2. In the upper groove or channel 5 there may be provided a ring or washer '1 in order to ensure a perfectly tight closure being obtained when the lid is fitted into position.
To close the container the lid is placed on the neck and rotated to a slight extent. The edge portion 3 thereby moves into engagement with the channel 6 of the lid, so that the latter is drawn tightly on to the neck, the ring or washer moving on to the upper edge of the neck and the outer skirt or jacket of the lid being firmly pressed against the neck.
It is to be particularly noted that the roll portion 3 constituting the thread is resilient, in that the free edge thereof does not contact with the remaining portion of the neck, hence turning pressure of the lid causes a slight deformation of this thread portion 3 to insure an intimate sealing relation.
It will be understood that no restriction is made to the specific form of embodiment shown,
I and that various modifications are quite possible within the meaning of the above without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a closure means for tin boxes fitted with a detachable lid, a neck portion having an'edge rolled, with the rolled edge bodily following a thread formation, and a lid having a rigid channel shaped to cooperate with the roll of the neck, said channel following a thread formation similar to that of the roll of the neck.
2. A closure means for tin boxes fitted with a detachable lid including a neck having one edge rolled, with the roll bodily following a thread formation, the lid having a dependingportion to fit within the roll, with such depending portion formed with a channel shaped to interfit with the roll.
3. In a closure means for metal receptacles fitted with a detachable lid, a neck portion on, no the receptacle having one edge of the neck rolled' inwardly in circular form in section and thread form in elevation, and a lid having a rigid channel to cooperate with the roll of the neck.
4. In a closure means for metal receptacles fitted with a detachable lid, a neck portion on the receptacle having one edge of the neck rolled inwardly in circular form in section and thread form in elevation, and a lid having a rigid chan nel to cooperate with the roll of the neck, the
