Description
R. D. CROCE BERRY BASKET Sept. 5, 1933.
Filed Nov. 28, 1931 12.2. iwce 3W Patented Sept. 5, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application November 28, 1931 Serial No. 577,815
1 Claim.
This invention relates to berry baskets such as commonly made of Wood veneer.
While baskets of this kind, as usually made, can be used satisfactorily for holding large ber- 5 ries such as strawberries, blackberries, etc., they have not been efficient as containers for small berries such as huckleberries, because these have sfted through the gaps which are generally formed at the corners of the Veneer baskets.
It is an object of the present invention to pro- Vide a Veneer berry basket with a lining of stiff paper or the like which is built into the basket at the time of its construction, this lining being extended across all Corners of the basket so as to close the gaps and retain berries of any sizes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it
being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the basket.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3 -3, Figure 2. Figure 4 is a plan view of the lining blank. Referring to the figures by characters of ref- .25 erence, 1 and 2 designate the strip-s of veneer overlying to form the bottom 3 of the basket and having their end portions upturned to form the walls 4.
In the usual construction the upper edges of the veneer strips are extended between inner and outer bands 5 of veneer which are fastened by staples 6, or the like. In this construction the walls form gaps 7 therebetween at the corners and these are objectionable for the reasons stated. 6G
The present invention includes a strip S of heavy paper or the like, preferably of the same color as the veneer and cut to such shape and proportions that, when folded to rectangular contour, preferably a truncate pyrainid, it will fit snugly against the inner surfaces of the walls 4 and extend from the upper edges thereof to the bottoms 3. This strip is scored at 9 to facilitate bending and it is folded and positioned during the shaping of the basket. It is also held by the bands 5 and fasteners 6.
It will be noted that the same Operations are followed in forming the lined basket as When forming the ordinary unlined container, there being merely the added step of folding and applying the strip 8 to the inner surfaces of the sides before the binding operation.
When the lining is in place the corner gaps are closed and small berries are prevented from sifting through the openings.
What is claimed is:
As an article of manufacture a berry basket having its bottom and walls formed of overlying strips of sheet material With upturned ends providing corner gaps, a strip of lining material S5 bent to fit snugly upon the inner faces of the walls and close the gaps, said strip extending from the bottom to the top of the basket, inner and outer bands between which the upper edges of the Walls and lining strip are seated, and fastening means for holding the hands, walls and strip against separation.
