A ORNEY Patented Sept. I, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CARTON Application February 23, 1935, Serial No. 7,663
9 Claims.
My invention relates to a carton and specific-ally to a carton formed of berboard or similar ilexible material and adapted for use in shipping and storing heavy merchandise, particularly bottled beer.
One object of my invention is to form the entire carton, inclu-ding the cover, of a single sheet of material with the minimum of waste.
Another object of my invention is to provide reinforcing means for the carton, particularly at the parts engaged by the hands when lifting the carton.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a carton made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section, one of the cover members being shown in raised position; Figure 2 is a top View, partly in elevation and partly in section, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an end View; Figure 4 is a bottom view, partly in elevation and partly in section, taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1; Figure 5 is an enlarged section through one end of the carton taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 3; Figure 6 is an enlarged view of a portion of one end of the c-arton; Figure '7 is a plan View of the blank from which the carton is formed; Figure 8 is a vertical cross-section showing a slight modification; and Figure 9 is a bottom plan View showing a further modification.
The carton is formed of a single sheet of berboard or similar material stamped out in the shape shown in Figure 7 and divided by longitudinal crease lines I and 2 into a central and a pair of lateral portions. Cross crease lines 3 divide the central portion into a pair of end panels 4, a pair of side panels 5, and a fastening strip 6. The portion of the blank extending beyond the crease line I is divided by slits 1 which are continuations of the creases 3, into a pair of bottom flaps 8, carried by the panels 4, and a pair of bottom flaps 9, carried by the panels 5. The portion of the blank extending beyond the crease line 2 is provided adjacent its edge with a third crease line I and is divided by cuts II into four parts. The cuts II are so positioned that two of the parts, forming reinforcing aps I2, are of less width than the panels 4 by which they are carried, while the other two parts are of greater width than the panels by which they are carried. The cuts II terminate short of the crease line 2 and are connected with the intersection of crease lines 2 and 3 by diagonal cuts I3. In this way I obtain the necessary material for the end cover flanges and at the same time secure reinforcement extending entirely across the upper edge of the panels 4. Cuts I4 forming extensions of the crease lines 3, extend from the edge of the blank to the crease line I0. These cuts, together with crease lines 3 and IIJ, divide each of the parts carried by the panels 5 into a cover panel I5, a 5 side cover ange I6, a pair of end cover flanges I'I, and a pair of fastening tabs I8. The crease line III also provides each of the reinforcing aps with a' reinforcing strip 24. Formed in each of the reinforcing flaps I2 are cuts I9 providing a 10 rectangular reinforcing strip detached along three of the edges but integral with the flap at the other. Formed in each of the panels 4 are cuts 2| providing hand-hold blinds 22. Cuts I9 and 2I are so positioned with respect to crease l5 line 2 that when the reinforcing flap is bent over upon the panels 4, the hand-holds formed by such cuts will register. Arr-anged between the handholds and extending across crease line 2, are slots 23. 20
In forming the carton from the blank the reinforcing flaps I2 are bent over against the inner faces of panels 4, reinforcing strips 20 bent up between the flaps and the panels, as best shown in Figure 5, and secured by staple 25. Reinforcing strip 24 is also bent up between the flap and the panel and secured by staples 26. Flanges I6 and II are bent up at right-angles to panel I5 and secured together by staples 2'I passing through flange I6 and tabs I8. The blank is now bent 30 into tubul-ar form and secured by staples 28 passing through the fastening strip 6 and the adjacent end plate 4. Finally, bottom flaps 8 are bent over at right-angles to the end panels, the bottom flaps 9 superimposed upon them, and the flaps 35 secured together by staples 29.
While I prefer to fold the strips 24 up between the flap and the panel, it may be left in the plane of the flap, as shown in Figure 8, as the most essential end reinforcing function is secured by the reinforcing flap and the reinforcing strip 20.
In Figure 9, I have shown an alternative construction in which the bottom. aps 9 are rst folded over and the flaps 8 superimposed upon them. With either construction two-ply material is secured throughout the entire area of the bottom.
It will be seen that I secure a strong and rigid carton with the use of a minimum amount of material, the bottom being reinforced by the use of two-ply material and the top by the use of flanges around three sides of each cover panel as well as by the use of the reinforcing flaps and strips. The hand-hold blinds 22 normally seal the hand-holds against entrance of light which has a deleterious effect upon bottled beer. When the carton is to be lifted, the blinds are forced inwardly, as shown in Figure 5. to permit entrance 'of the ngers into the hand-holds. Upon withdrawal of the hand the blind will spring back into position to exclude the light.
It will be understood that when my carton is used as a beer case it will be provided with the usual partition walls to separate the bottles but these have not been shown as they form no part of the present invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent bf the United States is:
l. A carton having an end wall comprising an end panel and a reinforcing flap superimposed thereon, said wall being provided with a hand hole, and a reinforcing member for the upper margin of the hand hole, said member being positioned between said parts and formed integral with one of them.
2. A carton having an end wall comprising an `end panel and a reinforcing flap superimposed thereon, said parts being provided with registering hand holes, and a reinforcing member for the upper margin of the hand holes, said member being integral with one of the parts.
3. A carton having an end wall comprising an end panel and a reinforcing flap superimposed thereon, said parts being provided with registering hand holes, the hand hole in one of said parts being formed by partially detaching a piece of material therefrom, and a reinforcing member for the upper margin of the hand holes, said reinforcing member being formed by folding said piece of material between the parts.
4. A carton comprising an end panel and a reinforcing ap superimposed thereon, said parts being provided with registering hand holes, a reinforcing member for the upper marginr of the hand holes, said member being integral with one of the parts, and a second reinforcing member below the hand holes, said second named member being formed by folding over the lower edge of the ap. Y
5. A carton comprising an end panel and a reinforcing flap superimposed thereon, said parts being provided with registering handA holes, said hand holes being formed by partially detaching pieces of material from the panel and flap, one of said pieces being folded between the parts to form a reinforcing member for the upper margin of the hand holes, and the other piece forming a blind to prevent entrance of light into the carton.
6. A carton comprising an end panel and a reinforcing flap superimposed thereon, said parts being provided with registering hand holes, said 5 hand holes being formed by partially detaching pieces of material from the panel andap, the piece carried by the panel'forming a blind to prevent entrance of light, the piece carried by the flap being bent over to form a reinforcing member for the upper margin of the hand holes, and
a second reinforcing member below the hand holes formed by folding over the lower edge of the flap.
