This invention relates to lapping tools and more particularly to. improvements in devices of this -character tending to simplify and render the same more efdcient.
The invention has as one of its objects toprovide- .a lapping or grinding tool comprising a plurality of lapping members mounted for radial adjustment upon a body and to provide means whereby each lapping member may be rocked longitudinally for the purpose of accommodating the tool .to tapered surfaces.
The several objects, advantages and the novel details of construction of this inventionv will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection ,With the accompanying drawings wherein:

Referring now particularlyto the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like parts, it willbe noted that the tool comprises a body 10, provided with a central longitudinal bore 1l,'radially arranged recesses 12 opening into the outer surface of the body and radial slots 13 communicating respectively with the bore 11 and the recesses 12. The body is provided with cap-plates 14 at the ends thereof,'
preferably formed separately from the body and secured thereto as, for instance, by means of bolts 15.. These cap-plates 14 define the ends of the recesses 12 which as illustrated, extend longitudinally of the body.
Arranged ineach recess 12 is a lapping member indicated generally-by the reference character 16 and comprising a shoe or hone guiding member 17 carrying a hone or grinding stone 18. The stones '18 are secured in recesses in the outer faces of the shoes and may'be'secured against endwise displacement by means of pins 19. The ends of the shoes 17 are extended beyond the ends of a the stones and are engaged by a circular resilient member, as for instance, a coil spring 20; whereby the several lapping members are all resiliently urged radially inwardly. The end surfaces ,of the shoes 17 are rounded or curved as indicated at 21 on an arc, the center of which is arranged sub- (Cll. El -184.3)
stantially or approximately mid-way of the length of the shoe. These arcuate or curved surfaces at the ends of each shoe are adapted toengage the cap-plates 14 and to permit of a longitudinal rocking of the shoes ina manner, and for a purpose, to appear more fully hereinafter.
Arrange d longitudinally of the bore 11 is a shaf or rod 22 provided with two sets of oppcsite screw threads 23. Adjustable blocks 24 engage the threaded portions of the shaft 22 and upon rotation of this shaft are adapted for adjustment longitudinallyof thebody within the adjacent portions 25 of the bore 11. The outer surface of each of the blocks 24 is fluted or provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced longitudinally extending grooves 26.
Arranged in the radial slots 13 are plate mem-' bars 27 each of which is provided with a pairof inclined or, bevelled surfaces 28 which surfaces engage in the recesses or grooves 26 of the blocks 24. The plates 27 are therefore suported by the pair of blocks 2% and any longitudinal adjustmentof these blocks by reason of rotation of shaft 22, causes a corresponding radial adjustment of plates 27. The outer edge 29 of each'plate 27 projects into or above the bottom of one of the recesses 12 so that each plate 2'? acts as a-support for one of the shoes 17 of the lapping members.
As a consequence of this construction it will be apparent that each lapping member is left unsupported at its ends even though any radial rectilinear movement is prevented. Thus the lap pmg members may be rocked upon the plates 27 to, for instance, the dotted line position shown in Figure 2. This rocking movement is furthermore permitted by reason of the rounded ends 21 or the shoes 17 Longitudinal movement of shaft 22 is prevented by means of a set screw 30 threaded into the body and engaging in an annular groove 31 formed in the shaft 22 at one end thereof. The a shaft may be rotated, for the purpose of adjusting the lapping members, by means of an adjusting rod 32 pivotally connected to the end of shaft 22 as indicated at 33. While the tool may be rotated within the cylinder in any suitable manner, I have shown an operating shaft 34- universally connected thereto as indicated at 35."
i The operation of the tool will be obvious from the foregoing and neednot be recited herein in detail. It will be noted however, that the lapping members may be adjusted radially by rotating shaft 22 which will move the blocks 24 toward or away from one another. .The action of these blocks upon the. inclined surfaces 28 of the plate members 2'? cause these members to move radially outwardly and to consequently move the "lapping members radially outwardly against the action of springs 20. While the outer edges 29 of the plate members 27, which are parallel with the longitudinal axis of the tool, rigidly support the lapping members in the ordinary use of the tool, nevertheless each lapping member may be rocked longitudinally because the plates 2'7 provide support intermediate the ends only of the shoes 17. What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a lapping tool, a body provided with radial recesses in the outer surface thereof, lapping members arranged in said recesses and means for adjustably and rockably supporting said lapping members including radially adjustable plate members projecting into said recesses and engaging said lapping members.

In a lapping tool, a body provided with ra-' dial recesses in the outer surface thereof, lapping members arranged in said recesses and means for rockably supporting and radially adjusting said lapping members including radially adjustable plate members projecting into the bottom of said recesses and engaging thelapping members intermediate their ends. 3. In a lapping tool, a body provided with a central longitudinal bore and radial recesses in the outer surface thereof, hone guiding members arranged in said recesses, radially adjustable plate members projecting into the bottom of said recesses for supporting saidguiding members, and adjustable blocks in said bore engaging inclined surfaces on said plate members for radially adjusting the same.
4. In a lapping tool, a body provided with a central longitudinal bore, radial recesses in the outer face thereof and radial slots connecting said bore to said recesses, a threaded shaft in said bore, adjustable blocks on said shaft, plate members arranged in said slots and provided with inclined surfaces engaging said blocks, said plate members extending into said recesses and hone guiding members in said recesses supported by said plate members- 5. In a lapping tool, a body formed with a central longitudinal bore, recesses in the outer surface and radial slots communicating with said recesses and bore, adjustable blocks in said bore, plate members in said slots engaging said blocks and hone guiding members arranged in said recesses and engaging said plates intermesecured to said body, lapping members arrangedin said recesses and provided with curved end portions .engaging said end plates, andradially adjustable plate members projecting into the bottom of saidrecesses and engaging the lapping members intermediate their .ends for permitting said lapping members to be radially and rockably .supported'in said recesses,
10. In a lapping tool, a body provided with radial recesses in the outer surface thereof, end plates secured to said body, lapping members arranged in said recesses and provided withcurved end portions engaging said end plates, and means located in said recesses and supporting said lapping members intermediate their ends for permitting a rocking movement of said membersrin said body.
.11. In a lapping tool, a body-providedwith radial recesses in the outer surface thereof, end plates secured to said body, lapping members arranged in' said recesses and provided with curved but permitting a rocking movement thereof with respect to said plate members.
12. In a lapping tool, a body formed with radial recesses and a bore, a pair of blocks in said bore,
means for adjusting said blocks, hone guiding members in said recesses, and means for permitting a longitudinallyrockable movementof said' guiding members in said recesses including plate members supporting said guiding members and slidable radially in. said body by means of said blocks. v
