6 Claims. (01. 76-31) This invention relates to improvements in filing devices and the like, and more particularly to improved means for filing the teeth of a saw.
An object of the invention is the provision of improved means for adjusting a file or filing mechanism in a desired relationship to the teeth of a saw to be filed and maintaining the same in said relationship, to the end that the teeth of the saw may be filed more uniformly and speedily. Another object is the provision of improved mechanism for adjusting the filing mechanism in all the usual relationships to a saw required by the filing of teeth of various shapes and sizes and maintaining the said relationships so that the teeth of a sawmay be filed in practically every conceivable manner desired with increased accuracy, uniformity and speed.
The invention also hasfor an object the provision of mechanism for accomplishing said results which will be simple of construction, easy of manufacture and relatively inexpensive.
These and other advantages and objects of my invention will appear from the specification here* inafter set forth, and in which:

Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the mechanism for positioning and maintaining the filing mechanism in its horizontal angular relationship;
Fig. 6 is a plan View of the mechanism for positioning and maintaining the filing mechanism in a definite horizontal angular relationship;

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings is shown applied tothe usual saw 15 having a blade .16, teeth 17, and a handle 18. The device includes guides 19 which are equipped with flanges 20, as shown particularly in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Provided between the guides 19 adjacent to the ends are spacers 21 which have the function of providing room between the guides to permit the blade 16 of the saw 15 to be inserted between the guides 19; The guides 19 are further provided with a plurality of apertures 22 which are placed at'various intervals along the guides for accommodation of blades of various lengths. A stud 23 having a screw 24 for cooperation with a lock nut 25; as particularly shown in Fig; 1, is employed-to tighten the guides 19 upon one end of the blade 16 when the blade has been inserted between the guides. The stud 23 is preferably provided with a wing nut 26. A similar stud and lock nut, et cetera, are provided at the other end of the guides 19 for a similar purpose. By means of the foregoing the guides may be adjusted upon the blade of the saw and locked thereupon in position for cooperation with the rest of the mechanism to be described e For cooperation with the guides 19 and adapted to reciprocate thereon there is provided a movable guide unit including a frame 27, as particularly shown in Figs. 1, 2, 5, and 7, having an elongated portion 28 and terminating at its ends in posts 29 and-30. The frame 27 is provided with horizontal slots 31 and 32. The purpose of these slots is to enable the frame of the movable guide unit 27 to be slidably mounted upon the flanges 20 of the guides 19, said flanges working in the slots 30 and 31. The frame 27 is further provided with a vertical slot 33, the. function of which is. to provide room therebetween' for the teeth 17 of the blade 16 which extend slightly above the plane of the flanges 20 of the guides 19, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3., Slot 33 extends through the posts 29 and 30 and through the upper surface of the elongated portion 28, as at 34,'thereby permitting the teeth 17 of the blade 16 to extend upwardly in said vertical slot 33 above the upper surface of the elongated portion 28 and thereby to expose the teeth of the saw to the action of the file. The posts 29 and 30 are provided also with recessed portions 35 and 36 at their upper ends and are also further provided-with bolts 37 and 38. The recessed portions 35 and 36 are constructed and arranged to receive a guiding cross bar 39 adapted to be inserted in the recessed portions of the bolts 37 and 38, as shown particularly in Figs. 5 and 6. Themechanism just described refers to the movable guide unit, the function of which is to ride upon the stationary guides 19 and at the same time slidably support the file holding mechanism hereinafter to be described.
Referring especially to Figs. 3, 5, and 7, there is provided for slidable cooperation with the guiding cross bar 39 a channel member 40 which is securedto a plate 41. and 7. The interior base of the post 43 is inclined and concave, as at 48, as shown in Figs. .5 and 7. The upper portion of the post 43 is vertically apertured as at .49, and the external base of the post is further provided with teeth 50, as shown in Figs. 3, 5' and 6. ,By means of pivots 5l a supporting guide or. cradle or channel member '52 is connected to the post 43, said pivots being, constructed to move in the slots 46 and 47 in the post 43, which are vertically elongated as shown especially in Figs. 5 and 7. This is to allow vertical adjustment of the channel memberv in said slots 46 and 47 in the post 43. Also pivotally mounted in the supporting guide or cradle or channel member 5215 a pin 53 which is afiixed to the base 54 of a vertically extending threaded stud 55 provided at its upper end with a thumbnut 56. v The pin 53 is located in arouate'wall slots 53A to allow for the rocking movement of the channel member 52. If it is desired to raise or lower the rocking element 52 the thumb nut 56 may be rotated accordingly and thereupon the screw-threaded stud 55 will be adjusted vertically in accordance with the movementof the nut 56. Inasmuch as the supporting guide 52 is connected tothe stud 55 by means of the .pin 53, the supporting guide 52 will be adjusted accordingly also, although'the pivots 51 are afiixed in the supportingguide- 52 and extend through the slots 46 and 47 of --the post 43, there will be no impediment'to the vertical adjustment because of the elongated nature of the slots 46 and 47. g
. Formed integrally with the plate 41 is a housing 47,;having a chamber 58 anda screw-threaded plug 59 at its end. The plug 59 is provided with a bore 60, and a knob 61 has a stem 62 projecting through said bore 60, which stem has a collar 63 and a latch 64 extending through a slot 65 in said housing. By means of a spring 66 seated at one end against the-collar 63 andat the other end against the plug 59, which spring is sleeved about the stem 62, the knob 61' is normally held incontact with the plug 59 and the latch at the same time is normally projected outwardly from the housing at the other end. The latch 64 is located adjacent tothe teeth 50 at the base of the post 43 and constructed and arranged for engagement therewith. The foregoing mechanism is one of the elements involved in the horizontal angular adjustment of the mechanism. In other words, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, the latch 64 is normally in mesh with two of the teeth 50 and thereby locks the post 43 against rotation and retains by the the same token the mechanism controlled by the postin adefiniteposition. When it is desired to rotate the post 43 and establish a new relationship, the latch 64 may be drawn out of engagementwith the teeth 50 by means of the knob 61. When the latch 64 has been withdrawn the post 43 is free to be rotated on its pivot until the desired position is attained, when the latch 64 may then again be placed in mesh with the teeth opposite the latch and the said relationship will be maintained by the locking action of the latch 64.
Referring particularly to Figs. 3, 6 and 7, a yoke 67 is pivotally mounted at 67A to the supporting guide 52. The yoke 67 has a screw-threaded arcuate stem 67B which extends through a slot 68 in post 43 and a slot 68A in said post. After extending through slot 68, stem 673 threads into an opening 69 in the stud 55 and then threads into an opening 70 in the nut 71. A portion of the opening 79 is restricted and screw-threaded to engage the threaded stem 67B of the yoke 67. The inner portion 70A is enlarged and the outer portion of the openingis flared as'at 7915.7 Formed integrally with the nut 71 is a spherical head 71A located in the socket 72 in stud 55; The nut 7lis retainedin the post 43 by providing onthe nut 71 a bead or collar-71B adapted to cooperatively engage with overlapping plates 710. By means of the aforesaid general construction, a desired vertical angular relationship of the supporting guide 52 and the supported mechanism including the file, maybe secured and maintained by manipulating the nut 71 upon threaded stein 67B.
Referring to Fig. 3 particularly,.a reciprocating bar 73 which is rounded in the preferred form as shown, at its ends; has bearings 74 and 75 mount edthereon by means of. bolts 76. Extending through the bearing 74 is the reduced shank portion 77 of a lock head 78 which is engaged on its outer end by a thumb nut 79 adapted to hold the lock head 78 flush against the bearing 74.. The lock head 78 has a triangular socket, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, and a vertical threaded bore 81 adapted to receive a set screw 82. The triangular socket ofthe lock head 78 is constructed to receive the usual-file 83, as shown in Figs. 5, 7, 9 and 10 especially; In order to accommodate files of various sizes, the triangular socket 80 may be made larger than the dimensions of the average file. To prevent any movement of the file within the socket, the set screw 82 is provided to be threaded into the bore 81 andinto the triangular socket 80 to engage against the'file and hold the same in place- Referring to Fig. 7, a pin 84 is mounted in bearing 74-and extends beyond thesurface of the bearing in the form of a lug 85 to engage teeth 86 formed on the adjacent periphery of the lock head 78.: As stated, the file is inserted in the triangular-socket 80 and held in place therein by the setscrew 82. If it is desired to change the rotative relationship of the file in respect to the filing mechanismproper, the thumb nut 79 may be unscrewed on the reduced shank portion 77 of the lock head 78 and the lock head may be withdrawn sufficiently away from the bearing 74 to disengage the teeth 86 of the lock head from the lug 85. The file may then be rotated to the proper angularity and when'that-has been secured it may be retained by meshing the adjacent teeth 86 with the lug 85 by closing the lock head 78 against the bearing 74Vand tightening the thumb nut 79 upon the reduced shank portion 77.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, the other end of f the file is engaged by gripping jaws 87 having a clamping sleeve 88. Gripping jaws 87 have a 90 on the .handle91. A collar 92 is provided on the screw shank portion 89 which extends through an elongated slot 75Ain the bearing 75, and on the'other side of the bearing the screw shank portion 89 has a spacer93 and a collar 94 thereon, with a stem 95, threaded asat 96. As particularly shown in Fig. 4, there is mounted on the bearing '75 a lug 97 with a slot 98. "The stem 96 has a nut 99 with a grooved portion 100 constructed to register with the slot 98 so as to rotatably engage the lug 97. The particular purpose of this mechanism is to provide foradjusting the respective ends of the file so that they may be located in a definite plane with respect to the mechanism proper. If for example it should be desired to adjust the end 83A of the file with respect to the end 83B, this may be accomplished by rotating the nut 99 which will cause the stem'96 to be raised or lowered. A chamber 101 is provided in'the handle portion to allow for the movement of the screw shank portion 89.
In the practical operation of the preferred form of the device illustrated in the drawings, the guides 19 with their flanges 20 are mounted upon the saw blade and locked thereupon by means of the lock nuts and wing nuts described. The movable guide unit including the frame 27 is then mounted upon the flanges 20 of the guides 19 by placing the horizontal- slots 30 and 31 in registry with the flanges 20 and inserting the flanges therein. By this means the guides 19 will support the movable guide unit and enable it to reciprocate thereupon. As shown inthe drawings, the teeth of the saw extend somewhat above the upper plane of the flanges 20 and through the vertical slot 33 to contact with the file 83. As the filing mechanism is mounted upon the movable guide unit, the file will be superposed over the teeth of the saw in position to file a tooth. However, in practical use the movable guide unit will probably be moved to one end or the other of the guiding cross bar 39 so as to begin at the first tooth which it is desired to file. The file is then in position to be operated by means of reciprocating the handle 91 and the reciprocating bar 73 in the supporting guide or cradle 52 transversely of the saw. When the filing of one tooth has been completed and it is desired to proceed to the next, the file maybe lifted out of engagement with the particular tooth by raising thesame because of the area for vertical movement in the supporting guide 52;
that is, the raising of the handle will cause the raising of the reciprocating bar 73 in the supporting guide 52 together with the file 83. By manipulating the handle 91 in the lateral direc-- tion desired the filing mechanism and the movable guide unit may be reciprocated to a point where the file is superposed over the next tooth 'to be filed and the file may be allowed to drop the latch 64 may be withdrawn from engagement with the teeth at the base of the *post 43. This will leave the post, which is hingedly mounted upon the plate 41, free to rotate thereupon to the desiredposition. When this has been attained the spring-held latch 64 may then be sprung back into engagement with the adjacent teeth 50 and the post with the supporting guide or cradle or channel member 52 will then be held in the desired relationship, and the reciprocation-of the reciprocating bar 73 and the file positioned therein will be controlled. Further, ifit should be found that the saw is too low relative to the teeth or too high relative thereto, this position of the file may be adjusted by operating the thumb nut 56 on the threaded stem 55, which will cause the supporting guide or cradle or channel member 52 connected thereto to be raised or lowered accordingly and the reciprocating bar 73 to which the file is linked will be altered accordingly also.
Should it be found desirable to obtain longitudinal angular adjustment of the file relative to a transverse section of the saw, this may be accomplished by adjusting the supporting guide or cradle or channel'member 52 by manipulating the nut 71 on the threaded stem 67B to tilt the support ing guide 52 to the desired position. The desired position will be maintained indefinitely and the reciprocation of the file 83 controlled thereby. In case it should be desired to adjust the file it-' self, the thumb nut 79 may be loosened on the reduced shank portion 77 of the lock head 78. As explained hereinbefore, the lock head '78 maythen be drawn away from the bearing '76 and the teeth 86 of the lock head will then be drawn out of engagement with the lug 85 of the bearing. After the file has been loosened in the chuck and incident mechanism at the other end, the file may then berotated together with the lock head '78 secured thereon by means of the set screw 82 until the desired adjustment is attained. Theteeth 86 of the lock head 78 may then be placed again in mesh with the lug 85 of the bearing and'the thumb nut 79 tightened on the reduced shank portion '77. .At the opposite end 83A of the file 83 the same is gripped by the gripping jaws 8'7 and clamping sleeve 88 may be manipulated to thread onto the externally threaded gripping jaws 87 so as to tighten or loosen the gripping jaws upon the file. As also explained hereinbefore,- the file may also be further adjusted vertically by means of the nut 99 and the threaded stem. 96. When the nut 99 is turned the stem will beraised or lowered, and inasmuch asv the bearing is connected to the nut 99 by means of the lug 97, adjustment of the file 83 relative to the bearing 75 will be accomplished and the file secured in its adjustment by tightening the handle 91 on the screw-threaded shank portion 89.
The structure hereinbefore described has innumerable advantages, some of which have been already indicated. Because of the structure, ease and speedin operation are afforded in facilitating the various adjustments which may be required in filing thedifierent kinds of teeth of a variety of sizes. carriages, one located on the stationary guides, and one mounted on the movable guide. The movable guide is located above the file and because of this fact it is impossible for the filings to clog the movable guide and interfere with its operation.
As disclosed hereinbefore, the movable guide may be superposed over a predetermined section of teeth to be filed, the length of which section The structure embraces two tooth to the next.

The sliding carriage may then be positioned adjacent oneend of the cross bar 39" in position to file the first tooth atthat end; although filings may collect as a result, This fact .will not be any bar preventing the file from proceeding from one In other words, by the construction disclosed, it is not necessary tostop the filing operation after each tooth has been filed, in order to clean out the collected filings. If it'is necessary to clean filings at'all, the entire section of teeth corresponding to the length of the cross bar 39 may beefiled first, and then all the filings which have been collected from the whole section of teeth may be cleaned at one time. The movable guide unit may then be moved on to the next section of teeth to be filed, and the file of the sliding carriage may be applied to each tooth successively and the operation repeated over again. In short, among other advantages, by means of the structure disclosed, greater range and facility of adjustment are attained with increased speed and uniformity of result and simplicity of operation and construction. Much of the disadvantage caused by the collection of filings is eliminated, and the necessity for frequent cleaning is diminished.
While I have illustrated and described the. preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efiect, this is capable of variation andmodification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself'of such variations and modifications as come within the scope I of the appended claims. 7 V Having described my invention, what I claim as new an desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a 1. The combination with alongitudinal guide detachably mounted on a saw adjacent the teeth thereof, of a movable guide slidably supported on said guide, a, carriage slidably supported. on said movable guide, and filing means supported on said movable guide including an adjustable channel guide for securing angular adjustment mounted on said carriage on an axis parallel with the longitudinal axis of the saw a reciprocatory bar adapted to reciprocate in said adjustable channel guide, and a. file supported thereby so constructed and arranged as to be reciprocated transversely of the saw.
2. The combination with alongitudinal guide detachably mounted on a saw adjacent the teeth thereof, of a movable guide slidably supported on said guide, a carriage slidably supported on said movable guide, filing means supported on said movable guide including an adjustable chanof said file relative to the face of the saw.

In a filing device, a carriage slidably supported on a saw or the like, means for supporting a-filev on said carriage whereby they file may be reciprocated transversely of the saw, said means including a post mounted on said carriage and having a slot, a channel member pivotally mounted in said slot, a file holder mounted to reciprocate in said channel member,-a yoke pivotally connected to said channel memher and having a threaded stem, and a nut threaded on said stem and swiveled in said post, substantially as described.

In a filing device, a carriage adapted to be movably supported on a saw and including an upwardly extending post, said post having a vertical slot,-a cradle pivotally mounted in said slot on a horizontal axis, a member pivotally connected to said cradle and having athreaded stem, a nut threaded on said stem and having a swiveled mounting in said post, and a file holdermounted to reciprocate in said cradle, substantially as described.

In a filing, device, a carriage adapted to be movably supported on a saw and including an upwardly extending post, said post having a vertical slot, a cradle extending through said slot, pins on said cradle pivotally connecting the same to said post on a horizontal axis, said post having vertical slots for said pins, a stud vertically movable in the end of said post, and having athreaded upper end, a nut threaded on said end and resting on the top of said post, a horizontal pivot pin connecting said stud and cradle to support the latter, said cradle having arcuate slots to receive said pivot pin, and adjustable connection between said stud and said cradle for varying the horizontal angle of the latter, and a file holder mounted to reciprocate in said cradle, substantially as described. a

A device as set forth in claim 5 in which the adjustable connection between the stud and the cradle comprises a member pivotally connected to the cradle and having a threaded stem, a nut threaded on said stem and having a swiveled mounting in said stud, the post being vertically slotted adjacent said stem and nut, and a file holder mounted to reciprocate in said cradle, substantially as described.
