1 Claim.
An object of the invention is to provide a grater having a body with a cutting surface and a box for the material to be grated, the box having an opening at the cutting surface, so that, when the 5 box is moved across the cutting surface, the material in the box will be actedon by the said cutting surface.
Another object of the invention is to provide guide means between the box and the body having the cutting surface for directing the path of movement of the box relatively to the body.
Still another` object of the invention is to provide the box with openings at its top and bottom, so 'that the material in the box whichl is to be grated may be disposed against thev cutting surface at the opening in the bottom of the box and be pressed against the said cutting surface by a presser member which is disposed through the opening in the top of the box. ltwill be under- 2'3 stood that the body having the cutting surface may be held with one hand of the operator andl a handle on the presser member may be held by the other hand ci' the operator, so that the hand y holding the handle on the presser member may not only press theY presser member down against the material to be grated, but may, at the same time, reciprocate the presser member relatively to the body having the cutting surface. The enl gagement ci the presser member with the inner sides of the box will reciprocate the box with the presser member carrying the material to be grated against the cutting surface.
A further object of the .invention is to provide the body with a Idetachable cutter member, so that any desired cutter member may be readily adjusted in position on the body and a worn cutter member be replaced.
Additional objects oi the invention will appear in the following specification in which the pre- 0 ferred form of the invention is described.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts in the several views, of which Figure l is a plan view of the 'gratelg Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view .on the line 3--3 of Figure 2.
By referring to the drawing it will be seen that r, the grater is provided with a body 5 having its 00 sides 6 bent around the parallel side portions 7 of a rod 8, the rod 8 being bent at 9 at one end of the body 5 to form a handle, the terminals 10 of the rod at the other end ofthe body serving l, as .supportinglegs.` The central portion of the 5') body has an opening, as shown at 11, there being (Cl. DIG- 179) flanges 12 which extend inwardly at the sides of the body at the said opening 11. There is also a iiange 13 whichextends inwardly at one end of the opening 1l and a flange 11i which extends from the' body inwardly at the other end of It will be understood that, while a particular type of cutter member 15 is shown in the drawing, any other cutter member with projections, teeth or knives may be employed. The cutter member 15 has a tongue 16 which is disposed under they ilange 14 at one end of the body y5, there being a pivoted flange i7 on the cutter member 15 which may be turned under the iiange 13 to hold the cutter member in position relatively to the body 5.
t will be understood that the body 5 is braced by the parallel side portions '7 of the rod Sand thatV the body 5 is also preferably disposed around a rod 18 at one of its ends, which serves to reinforce the body. A rod, similar to the rod 18, may be disposed at the other end of the body,
and the body may be turned around this second y transverse rod, should this be .found to be advisable to strengthen the body. f
The sides 6 of the body 5, which are bent around the parallel side portions l1 of the rod 8, serve as guides for the guideV members 19 on a box 20, the said box 20 being open at its bottom 21 and also at its'top 22, so that material or an article, which is to be cut or grated and which is shown in dotted lines at 23 in Figures 2 and 3, may be disposed in the box 2) against theV teeth 24 on the cutter member l5, which, when the box 2) is reciprocated on the body 5, will serve to move the box 2) vso that the material or article 23, which is to be cut or grated, will be rmoved against the teeth 24 on the cutter member 15. As a means to reciprocate the box 2O relatively to the body 5 and also to press the material or article down against the teeth 24, a presser member 25 is provided, this presser member being introduced 'iny the box Yat its top 22, the presser member' having a handle 26 which may be held by one hand of the operator, while the other hand of the operator holds the handle 9 to permit the recprocation of the box 20 by vmeans of the enloo gagement of the presser memberr 25 at the inner sides of the box, while, at the same time, the presser member 25 is pressed against the material or article 23 to press or force the same against theteeth 24 on the cutter member l5.
As Will best be seen by referring to Figure 2 of the drawing, the presser member 25 has depending teeth 2'7 Which are formed by cutting and pressing portions of the presser member downn Wardly, these teeth 27 engaging the material or article 2S and serving to hold'the same relatively to the presser member 25 and the box 29 as the box 2 is reciproeated over the teeth 24 of the cutter member 15. l
The upper portions of the sides of the box 20 are turned over a rod 28 which. is bent around the top of the box and which serves to reinforce the box, the box also preferably having transverseA which is the subject matter or this application, maybe manufactured inexpensively and that it may be eenveniently'used to out or grate materials and articles of various kinds.
What is claimed is:
In a grater, a rod bent between its ends to form a handle and with parallel sides, a body spaced from the bent portion of the rod with the sides bent around the parallel sides of the bar, the body having a central opening with end ianges extending into the opening below the plane at the top of the body te form seat`l a Cutter member having sides and one L sp-cased on the side anges and one of the end flanges, the cutter member having a tongue disposed derv theother end flange, a flange pivoted nnfle the said end of the cutter member for the if' er side of the adjacent end of the body, Va box open at top and bottom and havin.' sidesfthe bottoms of which are bent around the sides of the body at the parallel sides of the bar and Vwhich slide thereon, and a prever r m:aber disposed in the box for pressing material in the box against the member,
