Description

F. OSSING Aug. 15, 1933.
Filed May 15, 1931 Patented Aug. 15; 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT-joFFicEi Application May 15 1931. Serial No. 537,568 3 Claims. (01. 101-348) ers.
The rollers in common use on what are known as job presses comprise a steel shaft on which is cast a resilient roller, the roller being a glue-.
gelatine composition or specially prepared rub ber. Slidably received-on the 'ends of the roller shaft are guide rollers which operate on guides or roller-ways at each side of the press. The movement of the guide rollers over these guide-ways rotates the resilient rollers. Theguide rollers are removable from the shaft by merely sliding them longitudinally and are prevented from rotating on the shaft when slid into place by projections which are struck out of the shaft itself, the guide roller having a key-way into which one of the projections fit. y l e After being used for some time the rollers become dead and must be recast, the same shaft being used over and over again. It has been found that the projections which are struck from the shaft itself are soon worn or "broken off and the shaft rendered useless.
It is the object of my invention to provide a shaft construction which includes a removable key of a particular form which may be readily replaced when worn so that the shaft of the roller may be used indefinitely.
A further object is to provide a construction in which the shaft may be of uniform diameter whereby to reduce expense. 1
A still further object is to provide'means on the key which will abut against a cooperating means formed in connection with the guide rollers for positioning said rollers on said shaft.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is an elevation of an inking roller with a shaft and key constructed in accordance with my invention, one end being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal'view through one end of theshaft in preferred modification; Fig. 3 is asection on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view similar to that of Fig. 2 of a modified form and Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 of Fig. 4.
15 and spaced transversely extending openings 16 and 17. Thekey 13 is generally U shaped, be ing provided with extensions 18 adapted to'be received in the openings 16 and 17. It will be understood that the projections 18 have a driven fit whereby to be frictionally held in position. The key 13 has at the end thereof nearest the end of the shaft 12 a level portion 19 and is provided intermediate its ends with a projection 20 defining a shoulder at the end of the portion 19. The guide roller 11 is provided with a keyway adapted to receive the portion of the key 13 which extends from the projection 20 toward the end of the shaft 12. The composition covering lion the shaft 12 extends substantially to the projection 20 whereby when the roller 11 is positioned by the key, it will be adjacent the end of the shaft 12 is provided with a shallow keyway such composition covering. It is to be understood that the keyway 15 may be omitted in this modification.
In the modifications of Figs. 4 and 5, the openings 21 are positioned nearer the end of the shaft 12 and the key 13 is received entirely or substantially entirely within the guide roller 11. To this end, the guide roller is provided with a keyway which is deeper at one end than the other provided with a keyway 22 whereby to receive the projection 20 up to a certain point and there having its shoulder 23 adapted to abut against said projection 20.' The keys are of identical construction in both modifications and the only differences are, as is clear from the drawing, those already pointed out. It is to be understood that a keyway corresponding to that 15 may be provided in the modification of Fig. 4. a
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. An inking roller construction including, a shaft, a key associated with said shaft, said key and said shaft including means whereby said key is held against motion with respect to the shaft,
a guide roller on said shaft and provided with a keyway adapted to receive said key, said key being provided with means adapted to abut said guide roller for positioning the same, said key being received substantially entirely within said guide roller. r
2. An inking roller construction including, a
shaft of substantially uniform diameter, an open- 5 ing extending transversely through said shaft, a key having a projection extending into said opening and being of a size to be frictionally held therein, a guide roller onsaid shaft and provided with a shouldered keyway adapted to receive said key, said key being provided with means adapted to abut said guide roller for positioning the, same,
said key being received substantially entirely withinsaidguide roller. I
3. An inking roller-construction: including, a
