2 Claims. (Cl. 20G-44) The present invention relates broadly to packaging and more especially to a display package for frangible food products.

'Ihe present invention comprises more par- 5 ticularly a container for a plurality of edible objects such as marshmallow chicks, rabbits, or the like, which are sold primarily due to appearance and shape of the molding, and. therefore, the element of display is a major factor in the sales thereof.

IAnother feature is that while the objects are displayed for view, they are of such nature as require protection from dust and dirt and also require sealing to retain normal moisture, and because of the price at which suchobjects must be sold, the cost of the package must necessarily be low.

The present invention provides a solution for the above problems by comprising a plurality of open compartments wrapped in a sealed film of the type known to the trade as cellophane. More especially, the preferred formlof the invention comprises an open frame in which a partition unit member is set with the merchandise arranged in cells provided by the partition unit and with the frame and partition unit completely covered with transparent cellophane or the like so that both sides of the package are open for clear vision to permit the purchaser to have a. complete view of the goods, while the goods are thoroughly protected from dust and dirt and the normal moisture and aroma of the goods are sealed in the package.

Another feature of the present invention is that the frame which may carry advertising and ornamentation is preferably collapsible and the partition unit adapted to be mounted in the frame is likewise collapsible so that the package materials may be stored,in a relatively small space. When the frame is expanded and the partition unit set in place therein and the goods placed in the compartments or cells and the whole sealed in cellophane, the cellophane covering resists forces tending to distort the package so that the complete package becomes' a suiiiciently rigid unit capable of withstanding shipping and handling stresses without danger of collapse.

Other and further objects of the present invention will in part be obvious and will in part be pointed out hereinafter by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the disclosure herewith. It is to be understood that the disclosure is illustrative and not to be con 5 siderea in the limiting sense.

The preferred form of the package comprises a cardboard open frame member which, when expanded, comprises a rectangular frame A having top and bottom members 1 and side members 2. A partition unit B is adapted to set into said g5 frame A and preferably, the partition unit comprises strips of cardboard forming shelves 4 and other strips of cardboard comprising partitions 5. The strips of cardboard are each slotted one half of their width in order that the shelf members may be telescoped over the partition members until the edges of both members lie substantially in a common plane. When the shelf members 4 and the partition members 5 are interlocked and set in expanded relation, cells or compartments 6 are formed to hold merchandise 7. The merchandise 7, in the present case illustrated as marshmallow chicks, are placed in the compartments and a iilm of cellophane C is wrapped around the entire package in such manso ner as to provide two transparent sheets, one on each side of the package to comprise windows 8 through which the goods may be viewed for either side of the package, while at the same time thoroughly sealing the goods against contamination and retaining the moisture in the package. The ends 9 of the shelves 4 and the ends 10 of the partitions 5 contact with the frame and provide spaces ll and l2 around the merchandise cells so that the goods are protected from extraneous shocks delivered to the frame A during shipping and handling.

The frames and the partition members are so constructed as to fold fiat when stored and to be expanded when ready for receiving the merchandise. The cellophane wrapper around the package sustains any stresses tending to distort the correspondingly opposite sides, means carried by compartments open on correspondingly opposits,` sides, the ends oi' said strips of said filler extending beyond said compartments and into engagement with the inner side wall of said frame to form spaces between said compartments and said frame, and a sealed transparent wrapper forming a complete covering for said package whereby said goods may be viewed without breaking said wrapper.
