The nishing of soles of `shoes requires the use of various scouring,` polishing and `burnishing tools which are commonly mounted on a single rotating shaft, thevarious tools frequently being `used in succession by one'operator, only one tool of` a plurality on a shaft generally being used Tat anyifone time. This .latterv movement is limited by the link 52 the crookedportion of which is arranged to engage the upper part of the boss which thereby provides a stop which, in
`conjunction with the link 52, lever edand spring 36, holds the friction shoe in retracted position, or in its proximal position with respect to the support 20 as illustrated in Fig. 2.
As used in a finishing machine of the type referred to, the device is normally held in retracted position'as aboveV described'but when it isl desired to use the burnishing tool 16 theoperator merely turns the bell crank lever 46 in a clockwise direction, when looking at the machine as indicated by Fig. -thereby allowing the spring i136 to urge the friction shoe against the tool.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byrLetters Patent of United States is: Y

In a'nishing machine having -a. moving burnishing tool, a support, means for heating the tool mounted on said support formovement toward and away from said tool', means mounted to swing on said support for retraeting the heating means from the tool, and yieldingnieans arranged alternatively to urge the heating means against the tool and to cause the retracting means to'hold the heating means in retracted position..
2. In a iinishing machine having a moving heating the tool mounted for slidingmovement toward and-away rtherefrom, means for yieldingly holding the heating means against the tool, and means for opi'erating said heating means having Ya limited movement in one'direetion, saidyielding'means' being arranged also to hold the said operating proximal position with respect to the support.
4. A heater comprising a shoe adapted for frictional engagement with a moving tool, a support for* said shoe, the latter being arranged to slide in the support, yielding means tending to cause said shoe to move in one direction with respect to the support, and means for moving said shoe in the opposite direction comprising a lever having limited movement and connections between the lever and shoe cooperating with. said `yielding means to hold the lever` at one extreme of its movement.
- 5. A heater comprising a support, a friction shoe carried said support and mounted for movement with respect thereto, means for operating said shoe comprising a lever and link, and a spring arranged alternatively to urge the shoe away from the support and to cause the lever and link to hold the shoe in its proximal position with respect to the support.
6. A heater comprising a support, a friction shoe carried by said support andl mounted for movement with respect thereto, means for operating said shoe comprising a lever having limited movement in one direction, and a spring acting upon said shoe and arranged to hold said lever in the extreme position of its limited movement.
7. In a nishing machine having a moving burnishing tool, vmeans for heating the tool adapted for frictional engagement therewith and mounted for movement toward and from the tool, yielding means arranged to urge the heating means toward the tool, and means for retracting the heating means from the tool comprising a lever having limited movement and a member connecting said lever and heating means utilizing said yielding means to hold the lever at one extreme of its movement.

In a iinishing machine having a moving burnishingY tool, means for heating the tool by frictional engagement with said tool, means for urging the heating means towardsaid tool, and mechanism comprising a lever and a link for V,retracting the heating means from the tool convstructed and arranged to cause said second-menburnishing tool,.heating and cleaning means 'arranged for movement toward and away from the tool7 means for moving the heating and cleaning means between its operative and inoperative positions, and means constructed and arranged .alternatively to urge said heating and cleaning the tool, resilient meansfor urging the heating- `and cleaning means towardsaid tool,` and conmeans against said tool and to cause said moving means to hold them apart. a i
