11 Claims.
'I'he invention relates to improvements in ad justable safety razors and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide a safety razor in which double-edged blades are to be used and which does not need to be taken apart when changing the blade; second, to afford facilities for rapid setting and proper adjustment of the blade; and third, to give a simple and convenient way to open, close and set the razor for any cut and to lock it automatically with one hand.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is an elevation, partly broken away and shown in section, of a safety razor constructed in accordance with the present invention, the
parts being in the position assumed when the razor is ready for use;
Figure 2 is a similar View taken at right angles to Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary end elevation of the razor shown in the position of Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the razor with the parts shown in the position ready for the removal and replacement of a blade;
Figure 5 is a view taken at right angles to Figure 4; and I Figure 6 is an end elevation with the parts in the position of Figures 4 and 5.
The razor is shown as comprising a hollow handle l provided at its inner end with a reduced portion 2 in which there is formed a T-slot 3, the purpose of which will appear n the course of the description. At the inner end of the handle 2 there is provided a cross-bar 4 which may, if desired, be formed integrally with the handle, or may be a separate piece attached to said handle in any preferred manner. Extending from the bar 4 and suitably mounted adjacent its ends are two guide pins 5 which slidably support a guard 6 so that the latter will be capable of movement toward and away from the bar. In order to move this guard, there is mounted for sliding movement within the handle 1 a rod 7, one end of which extends through the bar 4 and is provided with screw-threads 8 for engaging in a threaded opening in said guard 6. To manipulate the rod 7 the same is provided with a iinger piece 9 which projects through the slot 3 in the handle and is so situated with respect to the grip of said handle as to enable the operator to move the nger piece in the longitudinal and transverse portions of the slot with the thumb of the hand which is used to hold the razor. piece in the longitudinal4 portion of the slot 3 moves the guard 6 back and forth with respect to the bar 4 and a rotative movement of said nger piece, when the latter is at the inner end of the slot contiguous to the transverse portion thereof, will move said nger piece into either branch of said portion and thereby lock the guard in position. In order to prevent the nger piece from becoming accidentally disengaged from one of said branches, small raised portions 10 are provided at the juncture of the longitudinal and transverse portions of said slot. Also, a small depression or notch 11 is formed in the edge of the transverse portion of the slot directly opposite the longitudinal portion thereof into which the shank of the finger piece will engage as the latter is turned to align it with said longitudinal portion, thus facilitating the operation of moving the finger piece from its locked position of Figure 1 to the unlocked position of Figure 4.
The razor further comprises a blade-clamping means in the form of a pair of complemental sections 12 which are adapted, under the influence of the movement of the guard', to move to operative and inoperative positions, or, in other Words, to covering and uncovering positions relative to the blade 13 which is mounted upon the pins 5 and supported by the guard 6. The adjustment of the sections 12 under the control of the guard 6 is accomplished by providing each section at its ends with laterally extending arms 14 which converge toward each other and have a` common pivot formed upon the adjacent end of the bar 4. Each arm 14 is provided with a slot 16 which receives a pin 17 formed upon the adjacent end of the guard 6 so that, as said guard is moved back and forth relative to the bar 4, said pins 17 will move along their respective slots and thereby swing the sections 12 about their pivots in opposite directions relative to each other.
When the parts are in the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, the blade 13 is held between the guard 6 and the outer edges of the sections 12, as best shown in the latter gure, and the inner edges of said sections are in abutting relation. Should it be desired to remove the blade 13, the operator need only engage the finger piece 9 With the thumb of the hand in which the razor is grasped and impart a rotative movement to said nger piece until the shankvthereof engages in the notch 11. Said finger piece is then moved into the longitudinal portion of the slot 3 and, in so doing, the guard 6 is slid along the A reciprocation of the nger swings the sections or elements 12 outwardlyV away from each other to uncover the blade which is resting upon said guard. The movement of said sections to this position is sumcient to permit of the withdrawal of the blade 13 from off of the pins 5 and between said sections without any possibility of contacting the latter. Upon replacing the blade preparatory to again using the razor, the movement of the inger piece 9 is reversed. When the shank of said finger piece is aligned with the transverse portion of the slot 3, said nnger piece may be moved in a rotative direction either to the left or right, in either case passing over the raised portions 10. The initial or longitudinal movement of the linger piece brings the guard 6 and sections 12 into cooperative relation to grip the blade 13 therebetween and slightly flex the same as is customary with razors of this type. By reason of the fact that the rod 7 is screw-threaded into the guard 6, the secondary or rotative movement of the finger piece, although only small, has the effect of imparting a very slight movement to the guard 6 in either direction, depending upon that in which the finger piece is moved. This very slight movement of the guard is utilized to regulate the grip upon the blade 13 in accordance with the desire of the user of the razor.
I claim:
1. In a safety razor, a handle, a guard movable with respect thereto, blade-clamping means cooperating with said guard and including pivotally connected sections movable to covering and uncovering positions relative to a blade on said guard, and means controlled by the movement of said guard for moving said sections to and from said positions.
2. In a safety razor, a handle, a guard movable with respect thereto, blade-clamping means cooperating with said guard and including pivotally connected sections movable to covering and uncovering positions relative to a blade on said guard, the relation of said sections, when in uncovering position, being such that said blade can be withdrawn from said guard and from between said sections, and means carried by said guard and engaging said sections for movingA the same to and from said positions when said guard is actuated.
3. In a safety razor, a handle, a cross-bar supported thereon, a guard movable relative to'said bar, blade-clamping elements pivoted to said bar and engaging said guard, said elements being adjustable to covering and uncovering positions relative to a blade on said guard, and means to move said bar to adjust said clamping elements to their different positions.
4. In a safety razor, a handle, a cross-bar thereon, a guard movable relative to said bar and having pins thereon, blade-clamping elements having arms pivoted to said bar and provided with slots to receive said pins, and means to move said guard to eiect, through said pin and slot connection, the movement of said clamping elements to covering and uncovering positions relative to a blade on said guard.
5. In a safety razor, a handle, a cross-bar thereon having blade-receiving pins, a guard slidable on said pins, a pair of blade-clamping elements pivoted to said bar, and connections between said elements and guard for moving the former about their pivots when said guard is reciprocated on said pins.
6. In a safety razor, a handle, a cross-bar thereon having blade-receiving pins, a guard slidable on said pins, a pair of blade-clamping elements pivoted to said bar, connections between said elements and guard for moving the former about their pivots when said guard is reciprocated on said pins, and a rod slidable in said handle and connected to said guard for reciprocating the same.
7. In a safety razor, a handle, a cross-bar thereon having blade-receiving pins, a guard slidable on said pins, a pair of blade-clamping elements pivoted to said bar, connections between said elements and guard for moving the former about their pivots when said guard is reciprocated on said pins, and a rod slidably and rotatively mounted in said handle and having a screw-threaded connection with said guard.
8. In a safety razor, a handle having a slot adjacent one end thereof, a cross-bar supported upon said end of the handle, a guard movable relative to said bar, a rod slidable in said handle and connected to said guard, said rod having a finger piece projecting through said slot, and blade-clamping elements pivoted to said bar and connected to said guard for movement to covering and uncovering positions relative to a blade thereon when said guard is moved under the control of said rod.
9. In a safety razor, a handle, a guard movable with respect thereto, blade-clamping means cooperating with said guard and including sections movable toward and away from each other, and means controlled by the movement of said guard for moving said sections.
10. The combination with a movable guard, of a pair of blade clamps over said guard and movable in and out of operative position, and means for simultaneously moving said guard and said clamps into clamping position, said means including a ilnger operated device for moving the guard, devices connected to the guard for moving the clamps as a result of the movement of the guard, said devices comprising a cam xed to one element of said guard and clamp, and a pin fixed to the other element of said guard and clamp and engaging said cam.
11. A safety razor, comprising a. blade-supporting member having a blade-receiving face, cooperating cap sections mounted for movement from contiguous positions above said face to spaced positions, in which saidface is uncovered, and a handle having an actuating member which has an operating connection with the cap sections for shifting them selectively into either of the beforesaid two positions with reference to the .blade-receiving face.
