This invention relates to improvements in locks.
It is a general object of this inventionto provide a simple and improved form of lock which is particularly adapted for use in connection with garage doors, and which is constructed in a ccmpact manner to limit the amount of projection of the lock mechanism from the inside of the door. This feature is particularly important where the lock is to be used on a door of the sliding, overhead type, as frequently the amount or" clearance for the sliding movement of the door is very limited, and any substantial projection of the lock mechanism is likely to interfere.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved lock in which a tumbler plate coop= eraole with a locking cam is utilized, and in which means is provided for accurately holding the parts in proper position to insure a positive locking engagement at all times and to minimize the possibility of the parts becoming loose and interfering` with the proper functioning of the mechanism.
A more specic object of the invention is to pro# vide a construction wherein the tumbler plate and locking cam are mounted and held against outward movement between two fiat plates.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved lock in which a stop disc is employed in connection with the locking cam, the said stop disc being rotatable'in an opening of the outer plate, and the locking cam being of larger diameter and rotatable in an opening in an intermediate or spacing plate, the saidlarger diameter or" the locking cam preventing outward movement thereof and insuring the maintenance of said cam in proper position. Y
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock in which the majority of the parts can be readily stamped out of iiat metal to thus render the construction simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of the improved lock and all its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating one complete embodiment of the preferred form of the invention in which the same reference numerals designate the same parts in all of the views: A
Fig. l is an elevational view showing the inside of a garage door of the sliding, overhead type with the improved lock in connection therewith;
Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on line 3 3 of Fis. 4;
Fig. 4 is an Aenlarged view of the rear of the lock mechanism, parts being broken away, the dotted lines indicating dirierent positions of the parts;
5 is a similar view on a smaller scale showing the parts in a position when the door is unlocked; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail View showing the locking engagement between the tumbler plate and locking cam.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 8 designates the trame for a garage door, and within said frame is mounted the door 9. lhe said door, which it is selected to illustrate, of one-piece construction, but or" the type simu-v lating a pair oi the usual swinging doors. A door of this type is adapted to he opened cy pulling outwardly on the bottom thereof and by then pushing the door upwardly and angularlyV in the usual manner. In View oirthe fact that doors of this type are well known and do not form an essential feature or this invention, the specc construction foi-.guiding the door in its movement will not be described. i
The door is provided preferably at an-intermediate portion thereof with two cylindrical openings li) and ll (see Fig. 3). An exterior plate l2, having openings 13 and le therein, is utilized on the outside lof the door, the opening lll being adapted to' register vwith the cylindrical opening 1G of the door, and the opening 13 being formed withv an inwardly extending circumferential flange l5 and being adapted to register with the cylindrical opening ll. Within the openings l0` and Vle a cylindrical lock 16 of standard construction is positioned, the said loci: being operable by a key 17, and having a stem 18 projecting through the opening lil tothe inside of the door. A cam member 1S isjrigidly carried on the end ci said stem. A handle 19 is provided with a stem 2) having a peripheral iiange which engages the plate l2 adjacent the opening` 13 thereof, the stem extending through said opening and through the other side of the door and being oi Ysquared form. Within .the cylindrical opening ll ci the door is a washer 22 surrounding the stem of the handle'and held in position by a cotter pin 23.
On the inside of the door is an inner plate 24 which is formed with an opening through which the'stezn l7'of the cylindrical lock i6 projects, the cam 16 being movable adjacent the outside of said plate. The plate 24 is also formed with another opening 25 through which the stem 20 of the handle 19 rotatably extends. Adjacent the exterior of the plate 24 is an intermediate or spacing plate 2S, said plate having a vertical slot 2'7 extending downwardly from its upper edge or slidably receiving a tumbler plate 28. Said tumbler plate has its upper end formed with a ange 29 and has its lower end formed with a tongue 30. The tumbler plate is also formed with an intermediate opening 31 within which the cam 18' is movable to raise the tumbler. The spacing plate 26 is also formed with a circular opening 32 within which a locking cam 33 is mounted, said locking cam having an edge formed with` a, recess 34 of a shape to receive the tongue 30 oi the tumbler plate. The said locking cam has a central square aperture through. which@ the squared portion oi the stem 20 of the handle 19 extends.
Positioned adjacent the exterior of the intermediate plate is an outer plate 35 having an opening 36rfor receiving the outer end oiithe 18 of the cylindrical lock, and also having acircular opening 37 which is concentric with. the
opening 32 oi the spacing plate but which is o less. diameter. Within the circular opening 27 of. the outer plate a stop disc 38 is rotatably mounted, said disc being secured to the lccking cam and having a square centralopening through-which, the stem 20 of the handle 'i9 extends. Saidstop disc is provided with a peripheral recess forming stop shoulders Z39-ande() which are engageable with a projection lil depending into the opening 3'? of the outer plate.
An inner handle member 42 has a squared opening 43 through which the inner end of the stem 20 of` the handle 19 extends. Pins 44 whichhave their inner ends in rigid connection with the stop disc have their outer ends extending loosely through apertures in channel shaped arms. 45, and are riveted as at 46 to the inner handle member 42. The outer, ends of the arms45extend slidably through brackets 47 on thesides of the doorand are arranged to be moved outwardly. through saidvbrackets to the positionshown in Fig. 1 so as to prevent outward movement. and opening ofthe door. When` thelocking mechanismis manipulated to draw the arms inwardly. sc as to clear theframe 9 of thedoor, then of course the door can be .opened in theusual manner. All of the plates .are effectively held together by` nutsiand bolts 48 which extendthrough the plates and the door. In;use, when the doors are locked, the arms 45 .are engaging the frame of the do0r,-and the tumbler plate 28is in a lowered position with its tongue4 30 engaging the recess 34 in the locking cam 33. With the tongue in this position, rotation of the locking cam and attachedstop disc 38 is positively prevented and the .arms 45 cannot therefore be moved. To unlock thedoor, the key'l'? is turned and the cam 18 onthe inner end of the stem 18 is rotated withinthe recess 31 of the tumblerplate 28 to causeraising of said plate to disengage the tongue 30 from the recessin the locking cam. Thehandle 19 on the. exterior of the door can then be turned to cause rotation of the discs and movement of the arms to the position shown in Fig. 5 so that the outer ends thereof clear the door frame. and permit raising of the door.
If it is desired lto open the door from the inside Whenit is locked, this can be done by merely pushing up on the ilange 29 on the upper end of the tumbler plate and manipulatingthe inner handlemember 42. l
From the above` it is apparent that the construction is positive and fool proof. In View of the fact that the locking cam is of greater diameter than the recess in the outer plate 35, outward movement of said locking cam is prevented and it is effectively maintained at all times in proper position between the outer plate 35 and the inner plate24. Likewise, the tumbler plate is retained in proper position at all times between the two plates, and thus proper engagement of thel tongue on the tumbler plate with the recess in the locking cam is insured. Due to the use of the fiat plates, a very compact construction has been provided and the amount of projection from the interior of the door is minimized so that proper clearance is insured during sliding and upward movement; Itfis further apparent that the majority of" the, parts, particularly the plates and discs, can be quickly stamped from metal, thus rendering the manufacture of the device simple and inexpensive.
Although the invention; has.. been. shownv as being particularly adaptedffor use-inA connection with garagedoors, it-,.is apparent` that the im'- proved: lock` may be -used inf. many.- other connections. Itv isfurther to be understoodzthatia'll: changes and modicationsare contemplated: as mayv come withinthe scope of: theclaimsz.
