My invention relates toa burial vault.
. The essential objects of my-invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a concrete burial vault formedof a series of separate units capable of being readily assembled when .occasion requires and with the units comparatively light in weight to enable conveniently handling them when assembling the vault; having the J inner face of each unit p'rovidedwitli a series of panels to reduce the weight thereof and the amount of material required less than would .be' the case with respect toa full thickness unitof equal dimensions; rein, forc
ing the units to provide Y for superior strength; forming one of the units with knockout portions for-drainage when desired; having. a bottom,a top, a pa r of sides and a pair of end :units capable ofbein'g -assembled together in a waterproof vault and with each panel having its inner face formed with transverse and lengthwise extending, spaced, intersecting ribs having the'transverse ribs of each unit reinforced to increase the strength of the latter; and to attain these ends in an unusually strong,
durable, compact, thoroughly eflicient and comparatively inexpensive structure.
e To the above ends essentially, and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention. consists of such parts and such combination of parts which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed] 'In the drawings: i
Figure '1 is a perspective-view of 'a burial vault in accordance with my invention, and with the top unit raised and spaced from the vault body.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal viewof the vault; p Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view of the vault. V v I F'gure 5 is a fragmentary View in -sec. tional plan of a unit.
7, The vault includes a top unit 1 providing the lid or closure, a lower unit 2 forming the bottom, a pair ofside units 3, 4 providing the side wallsand a ,pairof end units 5,-
Figure 2 is a sectional plan 'of thevault 4 ody- 1932. Serial No. 596,840.
6 forming the end walls of the vault. The units 3, 4, 5 and Gare superimposed upon unit 2. The unit 1 is seated upon the units 3, 4, 5 and 6. Each unit is constructed I from: reinforced concrete. The units '3, 4 are of like construction, but oppositely disposed with respect to eachother. The units 5, 6 are of like construction, but oppositely disposed with respect to each other. The units 1, 2, 3 and 4 are of rectangular con tour. a The units 1, 2 are of equal lengthf The units 3 and 4 are of less lengtli and width than that of units 1, 2. The units 4, are rectangular and the width thereof corresponds to that of the units, 1, 2. When the vault is set up the height of units 5, 6
par-allel transverse ribs 8 merging into the ribs 7. The outer ribs 7 of the set of lengthwise extending ribs are spaced from the side and end edges of unit 1. The outer ribs 8 of the set of transversely extending ribs are spaced from the end edges of unit 1. 30 Each rib is of tapered cross section. The
inner face of unit 1 is recessed to provide panels 9 and the ribs 7 and 8 form continuations of the walls of the recesses. The outer sides ofthe outer ribs 7 and outer ribs 8 are of less height than the inner sides thereofas indicated at 10. The side and end marginal portions of the inner face of unit 1. exteriorly of and in proximity tothe "outer ribs 7 and 8 are formed with length- 96 wise and transverse grooves 11, 12. The outer sides ;10 of the outer ribs 7 and 8 provide shoulders, abutments or stops for the side and endunits. Each side edge of unit 1 in proximity to the end edges thereof is'formed with pockets 13 to receive a removable lowering means for unit 1.
The upper or inner face and side edges of unit 2, are constructed in a manner similar to that of unit 1, with this exception. 100
i The unit 5 as well as The unit 3, as well as-the unit {1: has the,
inner face thereof constructed in a manner snnllar to that of unit 1, but with this exception,'the outer ribs have their outer sides flush with the edges ofthe unit. Thelengthwise ribs, transverse ribs and panels of each sideunit are indicated at 1'8, 19 and 20 respectively. The ribsof the units 8, at other than the outer of such ribs are of tapered cross section. The outer of said ribs have beveled inner sldes. The edge of each unlt 3 or lwhich isto oppose unit 1 is formed witha lengthwise extendlng groove '21 for re istration with a groove 11 to form a channeT of circular cross sectionfor the reception of a sealing compound 22. y
the unit 6 hasthe inner face thereof formed with horizontally and transversely extendingribs23, 24 respectivelyand recessed-t0 provide panels 25.
The ribs 23, 24 forin c'ontinuations of thewalls of the recesses. The outer of the ribs 23 and of the ribs 24 have their outer sides flush with the edges of the unit. The ribs of units 5 and 6 other than the outer of said ribs are of tapered cross section. The outer of said ribs having beveled inner sides. That edge of unit 5 or unit (3 which .is-to oppose unit 1 is formed with a groove 26,which,
registers with a groove 12 to form achan nel of circular cross section to receive .a
sealing means 26. i v
p The grooves'll and 12 merge into each other. The grooves 21 and 26 inergexinto each other. The units 3, 4:, 5 and 6 have coacting grooves to arovide channels 22" to receive sealing 1neans23 for sealing the corhereof the vault and connecting s'uclrunits together.
Each transverse r b of eachunit has ein bedded therein a reinforcingrod 27 extend ingthrough a plurality of spaced chairs 28, each consisting of a flat body having concave edges 29 to provide points 30 at the corners thereoffl The pointsat the outer corners of each chair 28 are flush with the periphery at the point of joinder of the sides with the front of the rib. Each-chair 28 has an axial openingBl for the passage of the reinforcing rod. p,
Each unit between the transverse ribs of,
the latter has its body reinforced by spaced opposed parallel bars 32 extending transversely thereof. Each bar 32 passes through a set, of spaced chairs 33 of the same. construction as the chairs 28. Each chair 83 has its points flush with the outer face of a unit and with a panel.
The length of each reinforcing bar is less than the transverse length of that unit in which it iseinbedded and has its ends spaced from edges of the unit adjacent such ends.
