The present invention has to do with a machine of the above type, and has for its object to provide a loop retainer which cooperates. with the looper for holding the needle loop back on the looper, and which loop retainer is shifted laterally of the line of feed with the looper in order to maintain the cooperative relation between the two for all shifted positions of the looper.

The invention is directed to a sewing machine for forming and laying stitches so as to ornament the surface of the fabric. It includes a needle which is mounted in a needlegate so that said needle can be shifted to different set positions in a direction lateral F ly of the line of feed. Cooperating with the needle is a thread carrying looper which moves in a plane at right angles to the feed, and this looper is so controlled that its oscillating position, may be shifted so as to 0 maintain its cooperative relation to the needle. This shifting of the needle and the oscillating position of the looper are accomplished by a pattern cam operating through a common lever. Thelever is connected to the needle gate, and. is also connected, through devices to the link which oscillates the looper and which is made in two parts so as to vary their angular positions for changing the oscillating position of the looper. Cooperating with the looper is a loop retainer which is of the four mo-, tion type, and the purpose of this 100 i retainer is to hold the needle loop well back on the looper and out of the way of the needle as it enters the thread triangle in the stitch formation. This retainer is moved across the upper face of the looper and longitudinally of the looper. The means which moves the loop retainer longitudinally is in the form of a link made in two parts,- and the angular positions of these two parts may be varied through the common lever which inv turn is controlled by the pattern cam. Thus-it is that the reciprocating position of the retainer may be shifted to maintain its cooperative relation to the l0oper..
' Referring more in detail to the drawings, the invention is shown as embodied in a sewing machine which includes a supporting bed 1 carrying an overhanging armi2. in, which a needle bar 3 is mounted. The needle bar is carried by a gate 4 which is pivoted to the needle head at the outer end of the overhanging arm2. The needlebar is reciprocated in the supportinggate 4 by. means of a lever 5 which is connected to an eccentric strap 6 cooperating with an eccentric on the main shaft 7. The needle bar carries a needle 8.
Cooperating with the needle beneath the work support is a thread carrying looper '9, which is mounted on a looper carrier 10.
The looper carrier 10 is. pivoted at 11 to a support 12. .The support 12 is oscillated by means of. an arm 13 cooperating-with a, cam 14 onthe main shaft 7. This gives a needle avoiding movement to. the looper. The loopercarrier is oscillated by a sectional link. The section 15 is pivoted to the looper carrier at 16, and the section 17 is of the machine.

The link 21 is pivoted at 22 to an arm 23 carried by a. yoke 24 mounted for oscillation on a fixed shaft 24 Said yoke carries an arm 25. The arm 25 is provided with a supporting pin 26 carrying a roller 27 which runs in a groove in a. pattern cam 28. This pattern cam is detachably connected to a supporting disk 29 which is rotated by an internal gear '30 which meshes with a gear 31 attached. to a stub shaft also carrying a gear 32. The gear 32 meshes With a gear 33 on the main shaft 7.
The arm 25 is connected at 34 to a link 35, which in turn is connected to the needle bar gate 4. As the pattern cam rotates it will shift the arm 25. The extent and direction of the shifting of the arm 25 depends upon the shifting of the groove in the, pattern cam. By changingthis pattern cam various ornamental figures may be produced through the changing of the direction of the laying of the stitching threads. When the arm 23 is raised or lowered it moves the link sections 15 and 17 toward or from a straight line, and this will change the oscillating position of the looper so to maintain the cooperative relation between the looper and the needle for various shifting positions of the needle.
Cooperating with the looper is a loop retainer 36. This loop retainer is mounted in a carrier 37 which is fixed to a shaft 38 mounted for oscillation and for reciprocation in a bearing lug 39 carried by the bed 1 Said retainer carrier 37 is provided with an arm 40 which cooperates with a cam 41 on the main shaft 7. This imparts an oscillation to the supporting shaft 38 and moves the retainer in a direction laterally of the looper. The shaft 38 is moved endwise by means of an arm 42 mounted for oscillation on a support 43 carried by the bed 1. At the outer end of the arm 42 is a head 44 which is forked so as to straddle a pin 45 carried by a head 46 attached to the outer end of the shaft 38. The
head 44 is mounted on a pin 47 which has a sllding engagen'ient with the arm 42. By this arrangement the shaft 38 can be moved endwise in its supporting bearing and is also free to be oscillated. The arm 42 is fixedly connected to an arm 48 carrying a ball stud 49. Mounted on the shaft 7 is an eccentric or cam 50 and cooperating with this eccentric is an eccentric strap 51 carrying a ball stud 52. A link 53 is connected to this ball stud 52 and to the ball stud 49.
Mounted on the yoke 24 is an arm 54 carrying a ball stud 55. .A link 56 is pivoted to the ball stud and is forked so as to straddle the link 53 and is connected to the shaft of the ball stud 52. As the main shaft 7 rotates the eccentric strap 51 will impart an endwise movement to the link 53 and the position of movement imparted to this link 53 will depend upon the position of the arm 54. Vhcn the end of the arm is raised the angular relation of the eccentric strap 51 and the link 53 will be more acute. This will draw the ball stud 49 to a position nearer the shaft 7, and will shift the position of the shaft 38 carrying the loop retainer 36. Thus it is that the pattern cam shifts the working position, of the eccentric strap 51 and the reciprocating position of the re tainer 36, and maintains said retainer in cooperative relation to the looper for its various shifting positions of oscillation.
It will be noted that the needle and the looper and the retainer as to their positions of cooperation are controlled by the one arm 25 cooperating with the pattern cam.
It is obvious that other means may be provided for maintaining the cooperative relation of the retainer and the looper, and it will be obvious also that various changes in the details of construction andthe arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully desc 'ibed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a sewing machine, the combination of a supporting bed, an overhanging arm carried thereby, a needle, means for shift ing said needle late ally to various reciprocating positions on said overhanging arm, a thread carrying looper cooperating with said needle, moansfor shifting the oscillating position of the looper to maintain its cooperativerelation to the needle, a loop retainer, means for reciprocating said loop retainer in tin'ring withthe movements of the looper for positioning the needle thread loop on the looper, and means for varying the reciprocating position of the retainer to maintain its cooperative relation to the 1001 or for the various set oscillating positions of said looper.
2. In a sewing machine, the combination of a supporting bed, an overhanging arm carried thereby, a needle, means for shifting said needle laterallyto various reciprocating positions on said overhanging arm,
a thread carrying looper cooperating with said needle, means for shifting the oscillating position of the looper to maintain its cooperative relation to the needle, a loop re tainer, means for moving said loop retainer laterally and longitudinally of the looper, and means for shifting the operating position of said retainer for maintaining its co operative relation to the looper for various set oscillating positions of the looper.
3. In a sewing machine, the combination of a supporting bed, an overhanging arm carried thereby, a needle, means for reciprocating said needle, a thread carrying looper cooperating with said needle, means for oscillating said looper and for giving thereto a needle avoiding movement, a loop retainer, means for moving said loop retainer laterally of the looper and longitudinally of the looper for retaining the needle loop thereon, and pattern controlled mechanisms 'for shifting the position of the needle on said overhanging arm and laterally of the line of feed and simultaneously shifting the operating positions of the looper and the retainer for maintaining their cooperative relation with each other and the needle.
4. In a sewing machine, the combination of a supporting bed, an overhanging arm carried thereby, a needle, means for reciprocating said needle, a thread carrying looper cooperating with said needle, means for oscillating said looper and for giving thereto a needle avoiding movement, a lOop retainer, means for moving said loop retainer laterally of the looper and longitudinally of the looper for retaining the needle loop'thereon, a pattern cam, an arm shifted by said pattern cam, and devices connected to said arm for shifting the position of the needle on said overhanging arm and laterally of the line of feed and simultaneouslyshifting the operating positions of the looper and the retainer for ma ntaining theircooperatlve relation with each other and the needle.
5. In a sewing machine, the combination of a needle,a needle bar, a needle gate carrying said needle bar, a thread carrying looper cooperating with the needle, a looper carrier on which said looper is mounted, a sectional link for oscillating said looper, a loop retainer cooperating with said looper, a reciprocating shaft carrying said loop retainer, an eccentric, an eccentric strap, a link attachedto said eccentric strap, devices op erated by said link for moving said retainer support endwise, and pattern controlled mechanisms for shifting the needle bar gate, changing the angular positions of the links oscillating the looper and changing the angular positions of the eccentric strap and the link reciprocating the retainer supporting shaft for maintaining cooperative relation between the retainer, the looper and the needle for different set positions of the needle.
6. In a sewing machine, the combination of a supporting bed, an overhanging arm carried thereby, a looper, means for oscillatmg the looper, means for changing the operating position of the looper on said bed, a
loop retainer cooperating with the looper, and means for simultaneously changing the operating position of the retainer to correspond to the change in the operating position of the looper.
7. In a sewing machine, the combination of a supporting bed, an overhanging arm carried thereby, a looper, means for oscillating said looper, means for varying the oscillating position of the looper on said bed, a loop retainer for operating with the looper, means for reciprocating said retainer,
and means for changing the reciprocating of a looper, a sectional link for oscillating said looper, a pattern controlled cam, an arm shiftable thereby, devices connected to said arm and to said links, a loop retainer,
a shaft supporting said loop retainer, an
eccentric strap, a link connected to said eccentric strap, devices operatedby said link for reciprocating said retainer supporting shaft, and means connected with said pattern controlled arm for shifting the angular position of the eccentric strap and the link actuated thereby for varying the reciprocating position of the retainer and maintaining its cooperating relation to the looper.
