Be it known that l, JOHN P. WEIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nyack, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful improvements in lhooper Mechanism for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sewing machines, more particularly to the looper mechanism thereof, the object of the invention being to provide an improved looper mechanism which is simple, durable and positively actuated, and which may be located entirely below the cloth plate and derive all its movements from the main rotary shaft and yet occupy as small space as possible, thereby to permit various attachments to be employed in and around the stitching position. while having such mechanism at all times accessible for threading, adjusting, lubricating, etc, one of the objects of the present improvement being to provide improved means for actuating the loopers in transverse direc: tions or in paths at right angles to each other,

The forward bearing 5 terminates in an upstanding portion 7 providing a rest for the cloth plate 8, while the extended portion 9 of the top arm 2 provides a rest for the other end 10 of the cloth plate. This cloth plate has the usualthroat plate 11 and suitable slide plate, (not shown), which may be removed for the purpose of threading the loopers, etc. feed actuating means for actuating suitable feed dogs, the whole designated in a general way by 12, see Fig. 12. The feed lift eceen tric 13 carried by the main shaft adjacent to the forward bearing 5 has a flange. it, which isdrilled to receive a pin 15 carried by an eccentric cam 16 for the purpose of driving the feed lift eccentric. The foregoing supporting means, usually in'the form of a "direct connection, however, wouldwnotbe practical in the organization shown unless the main driving shaft extended lengthwise of the machine andfthe looper supporting slide transversely thereof. Each end of the slide is slotted through a portion of its length, as at 24, and drilled to receive adjusting screws 25, which are provided with a reduced portion 26 and a conical end 27 which fits a corresponding seat 28 at the inner end of the slot, thereby to'expand a part of the slide for the purpose of taking up wear and restoring the fit between the groove and its slide. This slide 21 is providedwith a pair of hubs 29 drilled to re-' ceive conical studs 30 adjustably secured therein in any suitable manner for pivotally supporting the looper carrier'31, provided with an upstanding flattened portion 32 tapped to receive screws 33 on the front and rear faces thereof. These screws adjustably clamp theloopers 34, provided with elongated slots 35 so located as to permit adjustment of the loopers one with respect to the other, thereby to position the ends of these loopers to properly cooperate with the needles 36, which in this type of machine are so adjusted that one is set lower than the other according to the space between the needles; that is to say, when the needles are set a quarter of an inch apart the ends of the loopers are set a similar distance one from the other so that the point of each looper would meetits respective needle at the same time when making twin needle stitches. As the various classes of work this type of machine is called upon to produce require theneedles being set oblique, one slightly behind the other and at the same height, it frequently occurs that the right or the left needle must be in front to suit the conditions and character of work, which makes ita difficult matter to provide loopers of different shapes to meet these conditions. Heretofore looper carriers were drilled to receive the loopershanks and the spacing of the holes represented the spacing of the needleaandwhen necessary to change the needle gage or the position of the needles it was necessaryfto substitute other parts to suit the conditions.- This is entirely overcome by the present improvements, as each looper is so constructed as to meet the exjustable right and left screw threaded connecting rod 41, provided with the usual lock nuts 42 to maintain its adjustment. A split balljoint 43 operates on a ball stud 44 carried by a hub'45 which is provided with a ball race groove 46 and a beveled driving gear 47. This gear meshes with and is driven by a similar gear 48 secured to the main shaft 6, which has integral therewith a triangular cam 50 hereinafter'described.
A casting 51 is secured to the machine base by screws 52, and the upstanding part thereof, see Figs. 1 a'nd-4, is internally threaded, as at 53, to receive an adjustable ball race ring v54 having apertures 55 to receive a wrench for ad'usting the same. The
companion ball race ring 56 is identical with the ring 54 and confines the balls 57 in the groove 46 to properly position and control the gear 47 and the hub 45 and direct the ball stud 44 .in its rotary movement. This construction constitutes a right angle driv ing means for reciprocating the looper positively to and fro across the path of the feed and permits of the highest speed without heating, noise or undue wear and affords a simple means of adjustment for taking up wear, etc. This adjustment is maintained by the clamping screw 60, see Fig. 1, which is tapped into the castin 51, a saw cut 62 permittin the rim 63 o the casting to clamp the bal race rings by reason of the screw 60. The position of the gear 47 to and from the gear 48 may be regulated by adjusting the ball race rings 54 and 56, and by drawing the rings together the ball bearings 59 will be forced down nearer the bottom of the grooves 46 of the hub 45 so that it will turn f eely and without shake.
In order that the looper mechanism may perform its functions properly, improved means for handling the looper thread must be provided for in this type of machine so that sufiicient thread or threads will be drawn from the supply for each stitch, as well as means for clampin the thread while it is drawn and means or taking up the slack of the thread asthe loopers are leavmg the needle loops and while the looper threads are clamped. I accomplish this by means of an eccentric 64 on the shaft 6 opcrating in a strap 65, the other end 66 of which has a bearing on a conical stud 67 clamped in an arm 68 secured to a rock shaft 69 operating. in a bearing 70.carried by the casting 51. A thread pullod finger 71 is ad]ustably secured to the shaft 69 and operates between an arm 72 and a thread guide 73. A thread take-up finger 74 is secured to the other end of the shaft 69 adj acent to the bearing and cooperates with the looper thread passing between the arms 75 of the thread leader 76 which is secured to an upright 77 by screws 78 under the thread clamp spring 79, (see Fig. 4). A nipper plate 80 has projections 81 and 82 located on each side of the clamp spring 79 in staggered relation to control the threads as they pass between the two and the clamp spring. The plate 80 extends back and is adjustably secured to the arm 84: of the clamping rocker, which has a hub 85 journaled on the shaft 69 between the bearing 70 and the arm 68 and the end 86 thereof terminates in an arm overhanging and cooperating with the triangular cam 50, and the bottom thereof carries two flat leaf springs to coact with the cam 50 as a fork to give positive movement to the thread clamp 80 as the main shaft itself rotates. In its operation the timing of the thread handling parts is such as to cause the thread clamp to grip the threads at the time the thread pullod finger 71 is acting on the thread to draw from the supply. Simultaneously with this action, the thread take-up 7 4: is acting on the thread leading back from the loopers as they move backward and gives thread as they move forward at the point where the loopers have entered the needle loops and additional thread is required as the loopers go forward for the succeeding stitches, at which time the thread grip has released the threads, the finger 71 and takeup 7 4 giving up the thread as required by the length of stitch being produced.
The operation of the looper mechanism is as follows: As the main shaft 6 rotates in its bearings, the gear 48 transmits motion to the gear 17 and the ball stud 4A which reciprocates the rod 11 and the looper carrier 31, rocking it on the conical studs 30 into and out of the needle loops. At the same time the eccentric cam 16 on the same main shaft 6 is also rotated, giving movement to the block 17 operating in the fork 20 and reciprocating the slide 21 in its way 23, ex-
tending across the bed of the machine at right angles to the main shaft 6. or substantially so, (as it is obvious that the groove in the bed of the machine may be at a slight angle with respect to the main shaft, the ball joints provided for connection at each end of the rod 4-1 and the block 17 being shaped to suit). The angular portion of the fork 20 gives movement to the loopers from the front to the rear of the needles as they are rocking to and fro on the conical studs 30. The mechanism described is for making chain-stitches of the well known two-thread type, yet it is obvious that other loopers with a slightly different blade may be pro- Y vided for making the single chain-stitch,
such as shown in Fig. 10, or as shownin at 101 and support upstanding inclined looper carriers 102, to each of which a looper is adjustably connected in a similar manner to that hereinbefore described. To these linkage connections the pitman rod 41 hereinbefore referred to is adjustably connected, whereby the loopers, one or more pairs thereof, are shifted into and out of theloops during the movement of the slide from one side to the other of the needles. The lower connections of the links may be set the required distance apart so that the loope-rs may be interchangeable and may be used with various arrangements of needles, and by this means very wide twin needle stitches can be obtained. If an eccentric such as shown in Fig. 7 be used with the .block 17 the looper movement from front to rear of the needle will be continuous, while if a cam such as shown in Fig. 9 be employed the looper movement from front to rear of the needles will have a dwell at each side thereof. Such a movement is of advantage where each looper must cooperate with two or more needles in the formation of orna mental stitches, as it permits the looper blades. to operate parallel to such needles while taking and leaving the needle loops.
The looper blades are provided with the usual thread eyes and grooves 87 to carry the threads which pass through the thread eyes 89 and the arms 72, 75 and 77 directly to the supply.
It will be seen from the drawings that the location of the looper mechanism, and especially the mechanism for handling the thread, is-accessible from thefront of the machine without removing covers or guards, yet the thread is entirely out of the way so as not to be interfered with by the handling of the goods and has a direct line of travel, is easily adjusted, and other advantages will be obvious. The looper mechanism is so located as to give ample space for the various devices such as feeding, trimming, rufiing and other devices. parts for operating the loopers is not confined to a stitch mechanism for making the single or double chainstitches, but may be employed with equal facility for other types of stitching mechanisms.

merely substituting one form of sliding block for another, atandem arrangement of loopers maybe used as occasion may require, and that furthermore, in the present improvement a looper shaft carrying the loopfacilitates the useof the various arrangements of loopers hereinbefore described.
In conclusion, it will be observed that the means for handling the looper thread enables such threads to be handled from the front of the machine, thus obviating the necessity of such threads passing over the main shaft and also very much facilitating the threading of the parts as well as rendering the thread handling means more accessible.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the various details may be more or less dles may be set very close together, such as vamping or tip stitching shoes, where the needles are say one-sixteenth of an inch apart but spaced a quarter of an inch or thereabout between the respective twin needles.
When the machine is used for making these ornamental or twin needle covering stitches, one needle is set higher than the other according to the space. On the other hand when the machine is used for making separate rows of single needle stitching the needles are set at the same height and the loopers are spaced in accordance with the width between the needles.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a sewing machine having a base provided with a slideway therein transversely thereof the combination of a driving shaft extending lengthwise of the arm of the machine, looper mechanism comprising a slidingly supported plate mounted in the slide way of the ,b'ase, one or more loopers carried A thereby, and means for shifting said -plate transversely relatively to said shaft.
2. Ina sewing machine, the combination of a driving shaft extendingiengthwise of the arm of the machine, looper mechanism comprising'a slidingly supported plate, one or more loopers carried thereby, means having a part thereof secured to the top side of said plate for shifting said plate transversely relatively to said shaft, and means for shifting said looper or loopers transversely relatively to themovement of said plate.
3. In a sewing machine, the combination of adriving shaft extending lengthwise of the arm of the machine, looper mechanism comprising a slidingly supported plate, one
or more loopers carried thereby, said slide plate having secured to its upper side an upstanding, rigid bracket, means carried by said bracket for shifting said plate transversely relatively to said shaft, and means .for shifting said looper or loopers trans- .versely relatively to the movement of said plate, both of said shifting means having connection with the driving shaft.
4L In a sewing machine having a base providedfwith a slideway herein transversel thereofthe combination of a drivin sha t extending lengthwise of the arm of t e ma chine, looper mechanism comprising a slidingly supported plate mounted in the slideway of the base, one or more loopers carried thereby, said slide plate having secured to its upper side an upstanding rigid bracket, means carried by said bracket for shifting said plate transversely relatively to said shaft, means for shifting said looper or loopers transversely relatively to the movement of said plate and means for adjusting said loopers relatively to the plate.
5. In a sewing machine,-the combination of a driving shaft extending lengthwise of the arm of the machine, looper mechanism comprising a slidingly supported plate, one or' more loopers carried thereby, said plate having secured to the top side thereof an upstanding rigid fork, means located in said fork for shifting said plate transversely relatively to said shaft, means for shifting said looper or loopers transversely relatively to the movement of said plate, both of said shifting means having connection with the driving shaft, and means for adjusting said loopers relatively to the plate.
6. Looper mechanism for a sewing machine, comprising a slidingly supported plate, one or more loopers pivotally carried thereby, means for operating said vplate, means for rocking said looper or loopers relatively to the slide plate, said rocking means including gears, and means for ad justing one of said gears relatively to the other.
7. In -a sewing machine, the combination of a driving shaft, looper mechanism comprising a slidingly supported plate shiftable transversely to said shaft, one or more loopers pivotally carried by said plate, eccentric mechanism connected with the driving shaft for shifting theplate, means including gears earners one connected with the driving shaft forfork secured to the top side thereof, means carried by said driving shaft and located in said fork for shifting said plate at right angles to the driving shaft, and means also connected with the driving shaft for shifting the looper or loopers of the looper mechanism in the same direction as the driving shaft extends.
9. in a sewing machine, the combination of a driving shaft, feed mechanism operatively connected therewith for movement thereby, looper mechanism" comprising a slidingly supported plate, one or more loopers p1votall carried thereby, mechanism connected with the driving shaft for shifting the plate trai'lsversely to the driving shaft, and, ears one connected with the shaft for roc 'ng the looper or loopers relatively to the plate.

Looper mechanism for a sewing machine, comprising one or more loopers, a sliding plate for supporting said looper or loopers, means for shifting said sliding plate in one direction, and means for shiftin said plate, one of said means including means for imparting a dwell to said looper or loopere at a certain te.
15. In a sewing machine, the combination of a driving shaft extending lengthwise of the arm of the machine, looper mechanism comprising one or more loopers located sidewlse to said driving shaft, means for shifting said looper or loopers si'dewise relatively tosaid driving shaft, and means for shifting said looper or loopers in the direction of the length of the driving shaft, one of said shifting means including a slide plate having means secured to the top side thereof for the reception of an eccentric carried by said driving shaft. 1
16. In a sewing machine, the combination ofa driving shaft, looper mechanism comprising one or more loop'ers located sidewise to said driving shaft, means for shifting said looper or loopers sidewise relatively to said driving shaft, means for shifting said looper or loopers in the direction of the length of the driving shaft, oneofsaid shiftiiig r'fieaiis including a slide plate and eccen trio mechanism carried by the driving shaft and cooperating directly with a rigid part secured to the-top of said slide plate for operating said slide plate and the other of said shifting means comprising gearing partly carried by said driving shaft.
