HEDGE TRIMMER OR CLIPPER 1 .Filed Nov. 17, 1932 -2 Shets-Sheet 2 Patented July 25, 1933 UNITED STATES I I 1,919,516 PATENT OFFICE HERBERT KOCH, OI WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T JOHN SLABY, O1
' v i WISCONSIN HEDGE TRIMMER OR CL1PPER knives to clean, sharpen or repair the same and provide means whereby wear may be taken up.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved trimmer or clipper with the cuttmg head in section;
Figure 2' is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the lower plate of the cutting head showing the fixed knives.
Referring to these drawings, designates generally an electric motor of any suitable character and having any desired voltage and 11 a handle therefor fastened to the casing of the electric motor by the bolts or screws 12 and from this handle extends the cord 13 having the usual terminal 14 at one end whereby it may be connected to a source of electricity. The conductors within this cord are connected to the motor in any suitable manner, a switch 15 of any suitable character governing the passage of current to the motor. The armatureof the motor is mounted upon a shaft designated generally 16 and disposed within a casing 17 forming part of the gearcase 18. This shaft carries u on it a 100 worm which engages the worm w eel disposed within the casing 18, this worm wheel being mounted upon a shaft 19 carried by suitable bearings disposed in the vertical depending portion 20 of the gear case 19. The
105 lower end of the shaft 19 carries upon it the crank 21 having the depending wrist pin 22. The cutting head is formed by a plate 23 approximately triangular in plan view, this plate having upon two sides of the triangle the 1 downwardly depending flange 24 as shown in Figure 2. extending neck 25, which surrounds the lower portion of the shaft 19 and has a chamber enclosing the crank 21.- I
Opposed to the under faceiof'the plate 23 is the plate 26 as shown in Figure 3 which is so formed as regards its rear edge that it fits within the depending flange 24. The forward margin of this plateis formed with the fixed teeth 26a which are sharpened in the usual manner of cutting teeth. This plate 26 is held in place upon the plate 23 by means of the screws 27 or in any other suitable manner.
Disposed between the upper face of the plate 26 and the under face of the plate 23 is a reciprocating knife 28 having the forwardly extending cutting teeth 29 of the same character as the teeth and operating thereover. The rear edge of the plate 28 at its middle is provided with a nearly circular re cess 30 within which is disposed a wear plate 31 having the form of a lunette. The rear edge of this wear plate 31 is formed with a,
recess for the reception of an oscillating arm 32 which at its rear end is pivoted upon the screw 27a which is one of the screws holding the plate 26 in conjunction with the plate 23. These screws 27 and 27 a are shouldered as illustrated for the screw 27 w in Figure 1 so as to hold the plate 26 properlyspaced wears or as the upper face of the plate26 wears, the spring 35 will urge the knife downward, thus taking up wear.- 1
It will be obvious that as rotated by the motor 10, the wrist in 22 will be given a circular motion which t rou h the slot 33 will be translated into an oscil ating motion of the arm 32 and this will give a reciprocating motion to the knife 28, the wear plate 31 oscillating within the recess 30, the
This platehas an upwardly .a' take-up'spring 35. This take-up spring is normally flat and bears against the knife 28 1 and against the plate 23 but as the knife 28 the Shea 19 is movable knives traveling over the fixed knifes, of course, performing the cutting action.
Preferably the entire casing is of aluminum and preferably the plate 23 with the section 25 is stamped out of one piece and threaded to connect withthe section 20. The bottom knife plate 26, the sickle knife 28, the rocker arm 32. the half-moon shaped wear plate or hearing 31 and the crank 21 are made of hardened steel so as to reduce wear. Preferably, the motor will be a standard built motor of 110 W for about 1/20 horse power geared down to 700 R. P. M. This machine is adapted to be used for trimming hedges, lawns, borders, flowers, etc.
I claim 1. A clipper of the character described, comprising a supporting frame having a handle, an electric motor carried by the frame and having a shaft and a casin enclosing the shaft and forming part 0 the frame, a gear casing forming part of'the frame and extending downward therefrom, a vertical shaft disposed within the gear casing and having a gear operatively engaged.
with the gear on the motor shaft, the lower end of the vertical shaft having a crank provided with a wrist pin, the l0wer.end of the casing terminating in a plate provided along one edge with cutting teeth, the gear casing terminating in a plate confronting the first named plate but spaced therefrom, anarrn disposed within said space and pivoted at its rear end and formed with a longitudinally extending slot into which the wrist pin engages, a knife disposed between the upper and lower plates and reciprocating transversely thereof and having teeth coacting with the teeth on the first named plate, means for guiding the knife for rectilinear move-' ment, the rear edge of the knife having a circular recess, a wear plate disposed within said recess and oscillating therein, the slotted arm at its forward end engaging in said wear plate.
2. A clipper of the character described, including a motor casing, a handle engaged therewith the motor having a shaft, a casing for the shaft, a gear casing formed as part of the motor shaft casingv and depending therefrom, a vertical shaft having a gear disposed within the gear casing and operatively engaged by the motor shaft, a cutting head engaged with the lower end of the gear casing and including an upper plate approximately triangular in form and having its rear edge formed with a depending flange, the head including a lower plate confronting the upper plate but spaced therefrom and fitting within said flange, one of said plates having fixed cutting teeth, an arm disposed between the two plates and longitudinally slotted, a screw engaging the two plates with each other but holding I them spaced apart and passing through one end of the arm whereby the arm is oscillatably mounted, a crank mounted uponthe lower end of the vertical shafta-nd having a wrist pin engagin in the slot of said arm, a transversely reciprocatablecutting knife disposed within the cutting head and having teeth coacting with the teeth on the toothed plate, the knife being longitudinal ly slotted, screws extending'through said slots throu h the upper plate and through the lower p ate spacing the plates from each other, the rear edge of the knife being formed with a circular recess, and a wear plate disposed in said recess oscillable therein and having a recess in which the forward end of the oscillatable arm is engaged.
3. A clipper of the character described, including a motor casing, a handle engaged therewith, the motor having a shaft, a caslng for the shaft, a gear .casing formed as part of the motor shaft casing and depending therefrom, a vertical shaft having a gear disposed within the gear casing and operatively engaged by the motor shaft, a cutting head engaged with the lower end of the gear casing and including an upper plate approximately triangular in form and having its rear edge formed with a depending flange, the head including a lower plate confronting the upper plate but spaced therefrom and fitting within said flange and having its forward edge formedwith fixed cutting teeth, an arm disposed between the two plates and longitudinally slotted, a screw engaging the two plates with each other but holdingthem spaced apart and passing through one end of the arm whereby the arm is oscillatably mounted, a crank mounted upon the lower end of the vertical shaft and having a wrist pin engaging in the slot of said arm, a. transversely reciprocatable cutting knife disposed within the cutting head and having teeth coacting with the teeth on the lower plate, the knife being longitudinally slotted, screws extending through said slots through the upper plate and through the lower plate spacing the plates from each other, the rear edge of the knife being formed with a circular recess, and a wear plate disposedin said recess oscillatable therein and having a recess in which the forward end of the oscillatable arm is engaged, and a spring disposed between the upper andthe lower plates of the cutting head and bearing against said knife, screws which pass through the knife passing through said spring.
