BACK HAIR CONFINER Filed April 29, 1935 IMQ/2% www w @WM wf wi 20 device shown by Figure 1.
Patented July 25,` 1933 CAROLINE CASrER, or- Bos'roN, MASSACHUSETTS QBACK HAIR coNFINnn y vApplication inea Apri; a9,
The object of this invention is to provide a simple confiner for use with hair which has been bobbed, and lafterward allowedto grow, so that-a fringe of back hair, usually '5 curled or waved, depends atlthewback of the neck, the function of the coniiner being to vary the width of saidfringeand maintain it at any desired width, and somewhat compactlyV against the back of the head and neck,V Of the accompanyingvdrawing forming' a part of this speciicatioml Y '1 Y.
Figure 1 Shows the elements of myimproved conineras conditioned for application to a fringe of back hair. f
Figure 2 shows the eonfiner partly engaged 'witha fringe. v y
Figure?) shows'the conliner completely engaged with the'fringe.
Figure Llshows 1n perspective the take-up Figure 5 shows the takeup device in section, and engaged with the loopedgcord shown by Figure 1.V` Y j Lv Y The Same reference characters indica-te the same parts in all of the figures. Y y v 12 designates a fringe or layer of back hair depending from the back of the wearers head and neck. p j
, The'confiner comprises two resilient Wire hair lpins eachv including'two legs 13 con# nected by a neck 111 at one end of the pin, the legs being normally close to each other, as indicated by Figure 1, and adapted to be sprung apart Vby hair interposed between them, as indicated by Figure 2.
One leg of each pin includes a bent portion orminga recess 15V having a closed end 16 adjacent to and facing the neck 14.
The pins are insertable alignment with 40' each other in oppositeedges of the'fringe 12,l with their necks 14 in compressing Contact with hair constituting edge portions of the rfringe.
' The confiner comprises also connectingv 45 means adapted `to confine -the'inserted `pins with their necks 14. variably spaced apart Y' to determine and maintain any desired Width of the fringe 12. I
Said connecting means includes a Substantia11y'straight fiexible cord :17 having atene and maintainingv differentoperative lengths i end stretch 21 endw'isefin the sleeve, the/close members forming their meeting ends. l this in'stance,1`one yof said coupling members 75.' is a metalmember 25 fixed to thecord-l, and
having a screw-threaded terminal 26.. They member 25. .K
The conner is applied by lirst :inserting the pins in the iingewithout connecting theV 1,
Vnecks 14 andv thus cause 'anyj desired des.

`end an eye 18 Separably engageable with the closed end i one pin recess, and a `looped cord having an eye 2O separably engageable with the closed end 16 of the otherpin recess, Said cord including a main stretch 19, and anY end kstretch 21, said stretches forming a bight with which the eye 20jis`engaged. l g
.The connecting means also includes a takeup dev'iceassociated with ,theV looped cord thereof, said device being inthis instance" embodied in a metal sleeve including a tubular end portion 24v and a flat sided endpor` tion 22 having anoriiice The stretches 19. and'A 21 of the looped cord extend through,
j and closely fit, the lbore of the end 'portionv 22 and the .orifice 23. The operative length of Y the looped cord may be varied by pulling the fit ofthe stretches in thesleeve preventing accident-al end wise movementof v, either stretch;
The cords have compleliuental coupling other coupling member is composed of ametal member l27having` a threaded socket 29 rel ceiving the terminal 26,`r and aswiveled eye so' 30 connectedfwith `the cord `stretch v19, the
'member 27v being rotatable independently to f engage it with, Land. Separate it from, the
coupling'members, as lshown by Figure 2, and
then interengaging the coupling `members fas shown by yFigur-e 3. Beore thef coupling' vmembers are connected the Vloopedv cord is p lent-hened,. and after theconnection` of; the
A,coupling members the looped v`cord lis short#v ened to decrease the distance between the pin crease of ythe width ofthe'depending fringe.
The free outer ends of thefring'e hairs `may beftucked vinto the space vbetween'the pins and the connected 4cords so thatA all portionsof'theconin'er excepting the'pin necks- The free end of the cord stretch 2l is pref` erably provided with an eye 32 loosely embracing and slidalole on the stretch 19 to prevent said free end from swinging outward from the stretch 19. Y
Vv I claim:
A back hair confiner comprising in combination two hairf pins, each including two legs connected by a neck at one end of the pin,one leg of each pin including a bent portion forming a recess having' a closed end adjacent tov and facing th-e neck of the pin, said pins being` insertabl-e in alignment Awith each other 1n a fringe of back hair with the necks in compressing Contact with hair constituting opposite edge portions of said fringe, and connecting means adapted to confine the -pins with their necks variably'spaced apart to determine and maintain a desired width of the fringe, said means including a substantially straight flexiblecord having an eye separably engagea'ble with the closed end of one pin recess, a looped cord having an eye separably engageable with the Vclosed end of the other pin recess, and a take-up device associated with the looped cord, and adapted to maintain diii'erent lengths thereof, said cords having` complemental coupling meinbers forming meeting ends of the cords and separably interengageable to connectY the cords end to end! y CAROLINE CASPER.
