Oqymmaw m@ llaterited duly l, i933 Unirse STATES GEORGE HENRY WEF-BABY AND BENJ'ABEIN llLEjI-IAILIN, OF `RACINE, WISCONSIN, AS# COMPANY, RACNE, WSCONSN, A CORPORATION SIGNOR-S TO THEARY TRUNK OF WISCONSIN PAT raises ENT orion Application led November With the above and other objects in Viewv which Will appear as the` description proceeds, our invention resides in the novel construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly deiined bythe appended claims, itbenig understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of ther hereindisclosed invention may be made as come Within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, We have illustrated tWo complete examples of the physical embodiment of our invention constructed according to the best modes vve have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view oi' a hand luggage embodying our invention, said view illustrating the same in open position.;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary detailvievv of the cover illustrating the manner of drap.- ing the garment-s over the garment carrying frame; v
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating a slightly inodii'ied form of our invention; v l
Figure d is a side view of the cover orf-the modiiication shown in Figure 3 With a portion thereof broken away and shown in section to illustrate the means for maintaining the garment carrying frame in normal position; i
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail view of said means; and
Figure 6 is an enlarged cross sectional 2, i929. semi No.' 404,297.
Referring noW more particularly to theaccompany drawings, the numeral 5 represents the main section of a luggage carrier of the case type having a cover 6V `liingedly connected thereto along one ina-r- `ginal edge. The case lis further provided With a handle 7 and locking devices comprising main section carried parts 8,andl
cover carried members ,9.
The main section ofthe case is preferably divided into tWo compartments 10V and 1l by a partition Wall 12 detachablymounted in guideways 13 secured to the opposite side Walls 14 of the case. 'The compartment 1l provides ka receptacle for smaller pieces ot Wearing apparel andrits Walls' "which are formed by the section side Walls 14, the partition 12, and the front Wallv 15 of the case, preferably have pockets 16 i'or the reception of other articles. p The compartment 10, Whichis considerably narrower than the compartment l1,
forms a Well into Which the ends of garments draped over a garment carrying frame 17 hang. Thel garment carrying frame is mounted Within the cover' 6- and consists of side bars 18 hingedly connected at their lower ends to the cover side Walls, as at 19,
, adjacent the hinged'connection of the cover with the main section and have their outer ends connected by a bar 2() Which is preterably padded to prevent vvrinlrling'foitl the garments draped thereover.
Being mounted. in this manner, the nient carrying traine may be readily swung toward and from a positionV Withinv the cover, and to limit the Aoutward movement of the, frame, the side arms 18 are connected with the cover side Walls by pivotally ,conlnectedlink members 21y and 22, themeiny bers 21 being secured to the side arms and the members 22 being pivoted tol the v.side Walls of the cover.
lNith the cover 6 in its open position,v asv illustrated Ain i'igures `1, and the garment carrying frame swung outwardly, the bar 20 Vis disposed substantially over the Well formed by the compartment 10, and-inasmuch as the cover 6 is held against movement in either direction by a pair of pivotally connected or knuckle jointed links 23 and 24, which, when the cover is in open position, move slightly beyond dead center, the draping oi' garments over the bar 20 is greatly facilitated.
After the garments have been suitably draped over the garment bar, anelastic stra-p 25Vis connected across' the side mem-kv bers 18 outwardly ofthe garments to hold them in the plane of the frame and against the cover, by engaging hooks 26 carried by its ends in suitable apertures formed in the side members. The garment carrying trame may then be moved inwardly toward the cover to its position illustrated in Figure 2, where it may be secured by a second elastic strap consisting of separated sections 26 and 27. The inner ends of the sections 26 and 27 are secured to the cover and cooperating buckle members 28 and 29 are fixed to their outer ends bywhich they are connected.
To remove all strains from the strap sections 26 and 27 when the case is closed and the garment carrying frame is disposed over the main section, stops 30 are provided upon which the side arms 18 rest. y
To insure the proper angular movement of the link sections 21 and 22 during movement of the garment carrying trame over the main section, stops 31 are formed on the members 22 to prevent the passage ot' the point of pivotalconnection beyond dead center.
In Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 we have illustrated a slightly modified form of our invention in which the sectional strap 26 and 27 is dispensed with and a second strap 25 is connected across the outer ends of the frame sides 18.V Y
In this formof our invention the garment carrying frame is readily releasably held in its normal `position within the cover by interlocking means carried by the pivotally connected links 21 and 22 and consisting of an aperture 32 formed in each link 22 into which a tit 33, struck from a lateral extension 34 on the links 21, engages when theL garment carrying frame is moved to its position within the cover. Y
WVth this construction the garment carrying frame need not be separately moved within the cover, for the stops 30 arrest the downward movement of the frame during the closing of the cover and automatically move *the frame to its position withinthe cover. f z
It is noted that like in the aforementioned (3o-pending application, the bar 2O in both modifications, is directly adjacentthe tree edge of the cover when open, so that the removal of one of the innermost garments from thel frame is greatly facilitated by throwing back the outer garments over the adjacent free edge vof the cover from where they may be conveniently returned to the bar 20 after the desired garment has been removed, without disturbing their arrangement.
rying frame including side members having their inner end ,portions pivotally connected with the cover adjacent its hinged connection with the main section, whereby the'garment carrying frame may be swungto and from a position within the cover, pivotally connected link members connecting the garment carrying trame and the cover tor limiting outward movement of the garment carrying frame, and means carried bysaid link members for readily releasably securing the garment carrying frame within the cover.
2.v Hand luggage of theV character describedl comprising a main section, a cover hingedly connected thereto, a garment carrying trame including side arms, and a garment supporting member connecting 1 the outer ends oi? the side arms, means to pivotally connect the inner ends ot the side arms with the cover for swinging movement about a/fiXed axis adjacentthe hinged connectionv of the cover with the main section, said side arms being of such length as toposition the garment supporting member near the outerfree end of the cover, whereby the garment carrying frame may be swung to and from a position with its garment supporting member within the cover and near the outer free end thereof, means connected to the side arms adjacent their hinged connection with the cover to support the depending portions of' garments draped over the supporting member, means connected with a side arm for limiting outward movement ofthe garment carrying frame with respect to the cover, and means carried by said limiting means for readily releasably maintaining the garment carrying iframe within the cover.
