Patented Apr. 1, 1930 UNITED" STATES PATENT ol-"rlca SAMUEL BALIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO UNITED AUTO TRUNK CO., 01'
I NEW'YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK wannaonn na'rao'x Applicatigi filed April 20,
This invention relates to hand carried luggage with special reference to such as are used by women in travelling for the convenient and safe transportation of hats, wearing apparel, toilet articles and like impediment, not readily carried vin a conventional suit case.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a container designed specifically for the purpose of carrying such articles and in such manner as to avoid injury to the same even when subjected to the hazards of rough handling during travel.
A further feature is in the provision of'a series of clothes hangers arranged within the container and having means whereby arments draped thereon are held closely against the inner surface of the box cover, elastically restrained along their length and their lower ends held in a compartment in the main portion of the box ad acent a hat compartment.
Another aim is to produce means whereby any of the hangers may 'be removed without disturbing the others. 7
These and other important features which will become apparent as the description progrosses, are attained by the novel design, construction, and arran ement of parts hereinafter described and s own in the accompanying drawing, constituting a material part of tlns disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention shown in an open position.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of one of the hangers as supported in the cover.
Figure 3 is a front view of one of the hanger support brackets;
Figure 4 is a similar View of the mating bracket.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure 3.
V the bracket Figure 7 is a plan view showing the method of fastening one of the hanger pintles.
A sturdy rectangular case is shown in the drawing, consisting of two main portions, which may be considered respectively body 10 and cover 11 connected by hinges at the rear 1928. Serial 1%. 271,500.
and provided with the usual latching or locking devices. t
The body is shaped to present its side walls as inclined downwardly from the rear to the front and the cover is complementary, both being provided with a carrying handle '12.
A transverse partition 13 in the body forms 4 a front compartment 14, substantiall square in cross section and adapted to provi e ample space for one or more -ats without damage to their brims, the interior walls being provided with cushion linings 15 behind which small articles may be disposed.
Rearward of the compartment 14 is a rela- I tively narrow chamber 16 extending from one side to the other of the receptacle in its deeper portion and into which garments supported by the cover may extend.
Secured on one of the inner sides of the cover 11, at its deeper front portion is a bracket 17 provided with a series of openings 18 l8-18" and on the opposite side is a similar bracket 19 having a slot 20, open .at the front end of the bracket and from limit of the slots, to a position just above the niches 23 by a bowed flat spring 26.
The clothes hangers 28 are of conventional pattern arranged to support flexible articles on a bar 29, as entered through an opening in the hanger, and also to receive goods disposed over the top bar, these hangers extending substantially the full length of the coIitainer cover.
At the ends of the upper bar 29 are secured .clevises 30 having central extensions 31 and i set in'these extensionsare' th'stemsof rectangular pintles 32, either of which are pressed upward therein by the spring supported bar 24.
As the pintles are square in cross section, as are also the openings and passages in the brackets, it will be obvious that the hangers 28 may be reversed and in whatever position they may be entered in the brackets they will be prevented from swinging being held parallel at all times with the outer wall of the cover.
In addition the articles suspended on the hangers are further held against the inner surface of the cover by means of elastic straps 33 one or more of which may be used, these straps being fastened at one end to the inside of the cover and connected by catches 34 to the opposite side, permitting the articles, if of considerable length to enter the chamber 16.
F romthe foregoin it will be seen that a number of articles 0 personal wear may be safely and surely retained in good condition while travelling, and that several robes may be readily disposed upon the hangers in such manner as to retain their shape and neatness of appearance until required for use.
Although I have described my improvement with considerable detail and with respect to a particular form of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to such detail since many changes and modifications may well be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention in its broadest aspect.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A travellers case comprising a rectangular container having a body and cover portion hingedly united, each being provided with handles at the front, the side edges of said body and cover being inclined upwardly from the front to the rear, a transverse partition in said body forming a main forward compartment and a narrow rear compartment, brackets fixed to the inner side walls of said cover at its deeper front portion one of said brackets having rectangular openings and a slot having downreaching recesses in the other bracket, the recesses terminating in raised niches at their forward ends, clothes hangers having square pintles at their ends to enter the openings in the first named bracket, their opposite ends adapted 'to pass into the slot in the other bracket to eventually engage in the niches, resilient means to retain the pintles entered in the niches, and elastic straps in said cover to confine articles on said hangers against the inner surface of said cover, the lower ends of said articles entering the narrow compartment in said body.
2. In a traveller's case having a body and cover foldable thereover, a pair of sheet metal brackets fixed in the ends of said cover, one of sald brackets having a series of rectangusaid cover. This specification signed this fifth day of April, 1928.
