My invention relates to improvements in metal furring strips which provide for attaching metal or wire lath thereto so as to provide a sufficient space between the wire lath and the sheathing or other wall structure, to allow the plastic material to enclose the metal lath securely, whereby the wall structure when the plastic material is dried, will not crack or break. I accomplish these objects by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a detailed view in perspective of my improved metal furring strip shown on a wall with a metal fabric placed thereon in position to be attached thereto, and showing the mode of such attachment, and
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of a plaster or stucco wall and sheathing showing my furring strip mounted 011 the sheathing in said wall and the metal fabric mounted in the furring strip. Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My invention consists of the member 1 which is provided with the portion 2, portion 3, and the portion at.
The member 1 is made of a metal strip of such a gauge and width as may be desired and it is shaped by longitudinally bending or folding the portion 2 at a right angle to the portion 3 and similarly bending or folding in the opposite direction to the portion 3, the base portion 4.
The portion 2 is provided with a plurality of cleats 5 made by cutting a segment of said portion 2 therefrom and from the portion 3 so as to allow the said cleats 5 to be bent to a position perpendicular to the edge of said portion 3.
The portion 3 is of a width to provide the desired space between the metal fabric 6 and the sheathing 7 to permit the plastic material when applied to properly enclose and surround the metal fabric 6 and fill the space between said metal fabric 6 and the sheath- 7 The said portion 3 is also provided with openings 8, spaced apart throughout its length which are adapted to further reenforce the wall structure and to provide for contraction and expansion of the wall structure.
The portion 4 is provided with a plurality of holes 10 spaced apart throughout its length whlch are adapted to receive nails or other means for securing said member 1 to the said sheathing 7 or to the studding in case sheathmg is not used in the construction.
In use, the desired number of members 1 are placed on the sheathing 7 or studding in a vertical position so that the ends 9 of said members 1 will be at the top, thereby allowing the metal fabric 6 to rest on the cleats 5 when they are projecting from the member 1, and said cleats 5 are then bent back by use of a hammer or other means to their former position on the edge of the portion 3 J so as to hold said metal fabric 6 securely 1ggagnst the edge of portion 3 of said mem- It will thus be noted that my invention provides a continuous spacing portion between the mctal fabric 6 and the sheathing 7 or other wall structure, thus providing a rigd support for the metal fabric 6; that by means of the cleats 5 the metal fabric 6 is securely held in position against the member 1; that openings 8 provide for better re-enforcement of the structure, and reduces the possibility of cracking or breaking through contraction or expansion of the plastic structure. r
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A furring strip comprising an elongated flat base adapted to be secured to a sheathing or studding of a wall structure, a rib or web extending forwardly from the base for the entire length thereof and arranged at one edge of the base, said rib or web being adapted to support a wire mesh reinforcing fabric on its outer edge in spaced relation with respect to the sheathing or studding, said rib or web being formed at spaced intervals with plastic receiving openings, a flange extending laterally from the outer edge portion of the 9 rib or web and disposed in an opposite direction with respect to the base, said flange being slotted at spaced intervalsto form bendable cleats for securing the wire mesh fabric in position on the furring strip.
2. A furring strip comprising a flat elongated metallic base adapted to be secured to a sheathing or studding of a Wall structure, a rib or web extending forwardly from one edge portion of the base and disposed at right angles thereto, vertically spaced segments extending laterally from the outer edge of the rib or web and disposed in opposite directions to the base, and pliant cleats extending forwardly from the upper ends of the spaced segments to provide supporting means for a reinforcing metal fabric, the fabric being secured against the outer edge of the rib or web when the cleats are bent over the adjacent portions of the fabric.
3. A furring strip comprising a flat elongated metallic base adapted to be secured to a sheathing or studding of a wall structure, a rib or Web extending forwardly from one edge portion of the base and disposed at right angles thereto, vertically spaced segments extending laterally from the outer edge of the being formed at spaced intervals with plastic 8 receiving openings.
