Description

E. K1HOLLEY.
CARRIAGE-WRENCH.
Patented June 12,1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ELI K. HOLLEY, OF LOGKPORT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN B. HOLLEY, OF SALEM, NEW YORK.
- IMPROVEMENT IN CARRlAGE-WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,761, dated June 12, 1877; application filed May 7, 1877.
' tom view, and Fig. 3 represents a partial section through the outer casing of the wrench,
showing the interior arrangement.
The object of this invention is to furnish a cheap adjustable socket-wrench for carriages or other similar purposes; and it consists of a tapering or bell-shaped hollow casing, a crank and handle for turning it, and two jaws of the proper shape for forming a socket wrench when combined, the upper part of the same being jointed together and provided with a screw which projects through the top of the casing to receive a thumb-nut, by which the wrench is operated, as will more clearly hereinafter appear by reference to the drawing, in which- A is the outer casing; B O, the crank and handle. D D represent the wrenchjaws.
They are angular at the bottom, so as to form a square socket when put together, as shown in Fig. 2. E is a joint at the top by which they are connected. (See Fig. 3.) F represents a screw, connected with the jaws at the joint E. A spring, G, is placed between them to keep them apart.
The sides of the jaws are made to taper, as shown at H H, Fig. 3, so that they are drawn up by turning the thumb-nut I in one direction, and forced together so as to tightly gripe the nut, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3, and so that by a reverse movement of the thumb-nut the spring G will expand or open them.
I claim as my invention- A carriage-wrench consisting of the hollow casing A, provided with the handle B 0, in combination with the wrench-jaws D D, having the tapering or inclined sides H H, and provided with a joint, E, screw F, thumb-nut I, and spring G, as specified.
E. K. HOLLEY.
