My invention pertains to rotary pumps, and is an improvementrelating ,tothe type and kind of pump shown and described in my application for patent, Serial Number 243,810, filed Dec. 31, 1.927 now Patent No.`
1,827,088, of October 18, 1931. Thus, in the present pump my general object is to vsimpli?` fy the interior construction of the pumpand its manufacture, especially the structure in volving the intake anddischarge portions of the pump and the movable abutments` inend view of the pump with the face plate removed, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view vertical-- ly and longitudinally through the pump. Fig. 3 is a cross section vertically through the pump on line 3-3 of Fig; 2, and Fig. 4' is a similar view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5
is a plan View and horizontal section through the upper part of the pump on line 5--5 vof Fig. 2, and 6 is a sectional view in perspective of the pump body. Figs. 7, 8, and 9, are perspective views of the central division wall for the pump, one of the circular pistons, and one of the slidable abutment members, respectively.
The pump comprises a main body 2 having flat end faces 3-3 to which separate covers or closure plates 4 4 are removably secured by bolts 5. Bosses or extensions 6 6 on the plates 4-4 provi-de bearings for the driven shaft 7 of the pump, and one of these bearings includes packing rings 8, a gland member 9,
and an adjusting nut 10. Closure plate 4 includes a fluid passage 11 drilled at an inclina-y tion through its seating face to the closed end of the shaft opening in bearing 6, whereby the fluid or liquid passing through one of the pump chambers may be utilized to lu-` n bricate the enclosed end 7 of the shaft.
A single round opening extending through body 2 is divided into two circular working I chambers 12-12 by inserting a separate wall or partition 14 therein, and this partition or division wall 14 is in part of ring shape, to permit shaft 7 to pass therethrough, and includes a straight extension 15 adapted to sub-Y divide a vstraightslot orpassage 18 which I y extends 'radially' outward in the body fromA the working chambers 172-12@ Thus two separate rectangular l,shapes are provided above the two vworking chambers 172-12..,in vwhich twoV l abutment. members. or slides 17-,17 .may reciprocate inriding r.contact with theperipheral surfaces-of two round pistons 18k-18V on shaft 7. These pistons kare eccentrically related tothe aXis of the circular working chambers 12-12, anda sealing contact is'eccted by a small sector 13v of each i pistoni where curved on the sameradius as the, circular Wall of4 the working chamber. within which it rotates. Y The two pistons are also disposed one-hundred-and-eighty def` grees raparton the shaft to counterbalance y each other and effect a substantially continuous pumping action or flow of liquid through the pump. v l
The liquid to be kpumped is drawn intoy bodyV 2 at one side of the slides or abutments 17-17 and transferred by the'rotating pistons through the working chambers to the oppositeV sides of the slides or abutments Where it is discharged. The vpresent pump is particularly distinguished in that the inlet 19 and outlet 2() for the pump are axially aligned on opposite sides ofthe body, and in that their inner reduced ends intersect and communicate with rounded channels-21-21 formed in and extending transversely of the fiat side walls of vertical cross passage 16 in body 2. These channels l2121` may be produced ink one operation by reaming or drilling a round opening in the body rom face tofface -on a straight line' or axis eX- asy tending centrally through thestraight pasplate 4 to cover plate 4', and thence to theA circular working chambers 12-12 by way of grooves 23-23 milled vertically or length-` wise in the opposite faces of each slide or abutment member. However, the upper end of each slide is not milled or grooved, so that the liquid is barred or checked `from flowing upwardly into the upper end of cross passage 16, wherein an equalizing lever 24 is pivot-V ally confined in rest position" upon the flatV top edges of the slides or abutment members.
This lever is notched or grooved centrally p the only gap or space in vthey circular wall of the working chambers to be bridged by the rotary pistons in their rotary travel, is
Ithe relatively narrow slot orpassage 16,
whiclris only as wide as the slides orabut- Ament members 17 are thick, and the sector portions of the pistons where they Contact with the wall are of correspondingly small 1,917,524' jj L area and need not be much larger or wider than the slot or passage 16 to be bridged, thereby permitting a Working chamber of maximum size and capacity to be obtained in this type of pump. fManuacturing operations may also be expedited and costs reduced by constructing the pump body and abutment slides as herein described, land it.x has also been found advantageous to provide the extension 15 ,on partition ring 14 with shouldered osets or a slightly enlargedeX- tremity 30 to permitthis key-shaped partition member to beiitted readily within the key-shaped opening in the body.
WhatI claim is: f f Y ,I
In a rotary pump as described, a main body having la circular opening extendingl therethrough and al'sllot extending outward ly yfrom said opening, and a ring-shaped di!-v visionl wall adapted to fit within said circular opening, having a straight extension adaptedto occupy said slot, the extremityl of said straight extension being slightly en'- larged and adapted to engage the side Walls? of saidy slot to promote a centering lit ofthe f ring portion of said division wall 'within said circular opening. In testimony whereof I aliX my signature."
