10 to engage the post of the batter and the principal Patented July 4, 1933 PATENT OFFICE Y THOMAS -HILL, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN STORAGE BATTERY TERMINAL Application filed December 26, 1930. Serial No. 504,793.
" This invention has reference to battery terminals and it is my intention primarily to provide a terminal of this character that presents an entirely new originandpurpose, and
5 the outstanding purpose of the invention is v the extremely .simple method of construction and operation. I My invention is composed of a body hav? ing the customary clamping portion adapted anda sleeve portion integral with this b0 y adapted to engage one end of the electrical circuit cable, advantage is that the clamping bolt. emplo ed remains perma- .nently fixed with the attery post connecting portion of the invention, thus ehminatmg any possibility of the bolt becoming disengaged therefrom or entirely lost. Theoperation of the bolt is identica with that of any other type of terminal, thus preventing any diificulty or confusion in its normal use.
The invention possesses further advantages all of which will be brought out during the course of the following detailed descri tion, illustrated within the accompanying ing, and more fully pointed out in the appended claim. With. reference to the drawing}: Figure 1 is a plan view of t e invention clearly showing the same norm connected to the battery, the latter being shown in part, as indicated. Figure 2 is a plan view of the invention with part thereof in section, and the bolt omitted. I
Figure 3 is a side elevation. of the invention with a portion thereof in section, and with the bolt omitted. Figure 4 is an elevation of the bolt of the invention. Figures 5 and show a modified form of my invention in part elevation and sectional views.
The invention comprises a body 1 which is preferably of asuita le cast metal and having formed thereon projecting sleeve ortion 2 which is adapted to en age one en of an electrical circuit, as clear y seen in Figure 1. Integral with body 1 is portion 3 which .is
complete provided inner tapering surface 4 to raw- 4 conform to the post of the battery, and
a novel feature of my invention is the plurality of recesses 5 and countersunk upper portion 6 employed as shown in Figures 2 and 3, and thepurpose of portions 5 and 6 being to admit of a suitable lubricating paste which is disposed to liquefy upon the application of a slight heat, thus permitting the terminal to turn sufliciently to admit of perfect ease in the removal thereof from the post when desired.
Bolt 7 is provided=with reduced shank 8 thereon, and with reference to Figure 2 it is clearly observed that threaded hole 9 is pro- .vided and also plain-hole 10, andboth of thesaid holes being in perfect alignment. Bolt 7 having similarly threaded portionthereon to engage hole 9 and shank 8- adapted to pass through hole 10 and permitted to freely rotate therein upon the turning of bolt .7 in either direction, and in Figure lit is clearly seen that washers 11 are employedand to engage shank 8 of the said bolt, the end of the said shank slightly riveted as at 12, thus it is now understood that when bolt 7'is reversed within threaded hole 9 and the end of the said bolt being operatively re-' tained in portion 13 of the invention portion 3 thereof will be released from the attery said bolt will draw portion 3 firmly upon the said post. In this manner the terminal is quick y released from the battery and likevwise attached with bolt 7 ever available for instant use.
The modified form of my invention as indicated in Figures 5 and 6 embodies a bolt similar to bolt 7, body portion 3, recesses 5 and. countersunk portion 6, sleeve portion 2, washers 11, holes 9 and 10.
While I have hereinabove set forth a major form of my invention in a precise embodimentthe same is nevertheless susceptible to minor changes in the details of construction.
the same for the market, however in this event a departure from the general principle as disclosed would be consistently avoided.
