Description

0. 0. WILDER.
'PLOW-CLEVIS.
No. 191,629, Patented June 5,1877.
mulzillinll' W WW I I Ft/8% UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES O. WILDER, OF MONMOUTH, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-CLEVISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,629, dated June 5, 1877 application filed April 7, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHARLEs O. WILDER', of Monmouth, in the county of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Glevises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in securing clevises to plow-beams and consists in journaling the clevis on a bolt removably attached to the forward end of the beam-plates in either of a series of holes provided for the purpose, the rear ends of the clevis being extended to form lugs which engage with studs projecting laterally from the beam-plates, and hold the clevis from swinging on its fulcrum below a horizontal position, while they permit of its outer end being raised and oscillated from a horizontal position upward.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a construction embodying my invention. Fig.2 is a perspective viewa modification of the construction shown at Fig. 1.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the end of a plow-beam, having projecting beam-plates B B secured thereto. The outer ends of the beam'plates B are perforated with a series of holes, 0, arranged in a vertical line, and have each a series of laterallyprojecting studs, D, also arranged in a vertical line, and with a stud, D, coincident with each hole 0.
E is a clevis, its outer end flattened and pierced with holes 0, by which a double-tree, :10, may be attached thereto, as shown at Fig. 2, or otherwise. The rear part of the clevisE is formed of two limbs, E E, which receive the beam-plates B between them, as shown at Fig. 1, or are received between the beamplates, as shown at Fig. 2, and are pierced, each, with a hole, 0, through which and through either of the holes 0 a bolt, F, may pass, for securing the clevis in a higher or lower position on the beam-plates, as desired. The rear ends of the limbs E are extended to form lugs e, which lugs, when the clevis is adjusted in higher or lower planes by the bolt F in the series of holes 0, will engage with the stud D, which is immediately in rear, and hold the clevis in a horizontal, or nearly horizontal, position, as shown in the drawings, while it at the same time permits of oscillating the clevis in an arc upward from a horizontal position.
I prefer placing the limbs E exterior to the beam-plates, and projecting the studs D outwardly, as shown at- Fig. 1; but they may be placed interior thereto, and the studs D project inwardly, as shown in the modification at Fig. 2. In either method the operation and results are the same, permitting of adjusting the clevis at difierent heights on the beamplates, and holding it ill a horizontal position to prevent the draft bars as falling to the ground when the draft is not applied, and permitting limited oscillation of the clevis, as hereinbefore described.
I claim as new 1. The beam plates B, having laterally-projecting pins or studs D, arranged to operate in combination with a clevis, E, pivoted to the beam-plates, and provided with lugs or pro jections e, which come in contact with the studs D, substantiallyas and for the purpose specified.
2. The beam-plates B, having a series of bolt-holes, 0, and series of projecting studs or pins, D, arranged to operate in combination with an adjustable clevis, E, having rear lugs or projections e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES O. WILDER.
Witnesses W. B. BOYD, W. S. WEsT.
