Description

Drawing.
This invention relates to motor fuels and more particularly to a fuel which will effectively suppress knock in an internal combustion motor. a
The fuel of the present invention is formed by mixing with the ordinary low compression gasolines on the market a cymene comound which will effectively adapt the fuel or combustion in high compression engines without knocking. This fuel acts to prevent knocking, to maintain the engine cooler during its continued operation and to thereby produce more power by givlng the engine more ideal workmg conditions.
The cymenes, particularly ortho, para,
meta cymenes and the amino compounds of oymenes when added in small quantitles to gasolines or low boiling point hydrocarbons act effectively to produce a gasoline motor fuel which will suppress knock. Para cymene is obtained from wood digestion, particularly the digestion of spruce pulp, and is commonly known as spruce turpentine. Para cymene also is obtained in comparatively large quantities from high flash naphtha from coke oven oil. That fraction'in coke oil boiling between 165 and 190 G. contains approximately 20-35% of tetra methyl benzenes and 20-35% of cymenes. Tetra methyl benzenes are composed largely ofdurene and iso durene. Para cymene and meta-cymene constitute a proximately 20 to 35% of the fraction, an have the formula C H lara Cymene Meta Cymme By nitrating the para cymene and then reducing nitrocymene it is possible to obtain two amino cymenes, namely 2-amino- -pcymene called cymidine or carvacryl amine and 3-amino-p-cymene or thymyl amine. Gymidine' is ortho amino para cymene having the following formula:
Application fledAJune 18, 1981. Serial No. 545,372.-
C midine is a li%iid having a boiling point 0 240 to 242 and a melting point less than 16 C. Thymyl'amine is meta amino para cymene having the following formula:
I I-(cm),
Thymyl amine is normally a liquid with a boiling point of 230 C. and a' melting point below 15 C.
By the nitration and reduction of metacymene two amino compounds of cymene may formed5 amino-m-cymene and 6- am1no-m-cymenewhich' are normally liquids and have the following formulae:
cm on:
an CE(CH:4): 011mm),
All of the amino cymene compounds above referred to are directly soluble in the normal gasolines that are found on the market and act as knock suppressors.
As the example of knock suppression it has been found that a solution of 20% of cymene and 80% Standard A gasoline in the standard knock testing engine will give the same knock effect as the mixture of 31% pure benzol and 69% Standard A gasoline. The anti-knock value of one per cent by volume of ortho amino para cymene in reference fuel B having 67.6 octane number when tested in standard knock testing engine having a compression pressure 140 lbs/sq. in. With spark advance 15, was equivalent to 0.4 of a cubic centimeter E of tetra ethyl lead, and 4% of ortho ammo para cymene in standard fuel B gave the equivalent anti-knock effect in the of the aromatic nucleus and do not have any other elements connected with the aromatic nucleus except carbon and hydrogen. The
compounds which have a molecular structure such as outlined above are entirely consumed in the proper combustion of the motor fuel in the engine and do not produce poisonous compounds which are injurious to health.
Having thus described the above invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An anti-knock motor fuel comprising a mixture of low boiling point hydrocarbons and a relatively small proportion of an amino compound of cymene wherein the amino group is attached directly to the carbonof the benzene nucleus.
2. An anti-knock motor fuel comprising a mixture of low boiling point hydrocarbons In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
