This invention relates to improvements in smoke eliminators for boiler furnaces, v and it consists of the matters `hereinafter 'dev-v scribed and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. l
The primary object of the invention isi to provide a simple and eilicient device disposed in one of the `walls of a furnace and opening at one end into the iirebox thereof, to insure complete burning of all products of combus tion7 whereby a saving in fuel is attained and the discharge of smoke to the 'atmosphere with its attending objections, is avoided.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this lkind embodying. inner, and outer conduits that open at one end into the firebox and communicate at their other end and employ in connection. therewith a jet nozzle that discharges into one of said conduits so that products of combustion kare drawn into the other conduit and there mingled with the steam issuing from saidnozzle and atmospheric lair to provide a mixture that is discharged back into the'rebox and completes combustion therein.
Still another yobject, of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which is applicable to locomotive boiler lireboxes as well as to stationary boiler i'lreboxes and which device may be made-andk sold at va low cost and may be installed in boiler fireboxes now in use in but a short time.-

will belherein described, as embodied in a suitable manner while the corresponding end Se of the vother conduit opens into a fitting which in turnI opens at one end'to atmosphere and has a steam jet nozzle therein that discharges into said other conduit. Under the action of the nozzle, an'aspiratingaction is established in` saiditting, whichcauses an inrush of atmospheric -air thereinto that mixes with the steam and is discharged under pressure into said-last mentionedconduit. As this mixture is established, between saidconduits, a suction action is produced in said conduits.
Products of combustion from the rebox are thus drawn into, said first mentioned conduit to passinto the secondone, where they mix withthe air and steamto further raise the temperature thereof and be discharged at a relatively high temperature,.pressure andy velocity into thefirebox.- The combinedmixture thus introduced into the firebox, insures complete combustion of the products ofcom-` bustion in the rebox and thus eliminates the formation of smoke andvits objectionable l .discharge out of the stack connectedto the virebox. n
Referring .now lin detail to that embodi-y ment of the invention, illustrated' in the' acn companying drawing: 1 and 2 indicate respectively, the inner and outer spaced sheets of a locomotive firebox defining a side water leg'g. Extendingbetween said sheets is a tube 4, suitably securedv at its ends in said sheets in a pressure tight manner. In certain locomotive boilers, such tubes known as y ico present, I make use of the same to apply other parts of my invention thereto. `When such a tube is not already in place, a suitable opening is made in said sheets and such a tube is applied in position therein.
In the outer end of said tube, I secure an internally threaded ring and preferably said ring is welded in place as indicated at 6. Within said tube 4, I provide a second tube 7 of smaller diameter and which is externally threaded at its outer end as best shown in Fig. 1 and in the diametrically opposite sides of said extremity of said end, I provide notches 7 a. Such a tube which is of' a length somewhat greater than that of the tube 4, is
so threaded through the ring 5 as tobe supported thereby and its outer end extends 'somewhat outwardly beyond said ring and its inner end extends a short distance beyond the inside of the inner sheet 1 of the fireboX.
By means of the notches 7a, any suitable device may be engaged therein for imparting a turning movem-ent to said tube from-outside the firebox as when assembling said tube in position or when removing the same therefrom.
In the inner tube 7, near the ring 5 is provided a plurality of arcuately spaced, radially extending openings 8, each counterbored at its outer or inlet end as best shown in Fig.v 3. 0n the outer end part of the inner tube 7 beyond the ring 5, is threaded one endjof a "ii-fitting 9 and in the other end of said fitting is threaded abushing 10, the right angled branch 11 of said tting, opening to atmosphere and preferably facing downwardly to better preventthe entrance of foreign mate rial thereinto.
In the bushing is threaded a steam jet nozzle 12 so disposed that its inner end discharges axially into the outer end of the tube 7. The outer end of said jet nozzle receives the branch'13 of' a second T-iitting 14, into opposite ends of which are threaded pipes 15 constituting headers leading from a source of steam supply and to a second and companion eliminator device. In locomotive boiler work there will be a number of devices, along the side of the fireboX end of the boiler, and all devices on one side thereof, will be co'nnectedy to said headers as is apparent.
The two tubes 4 and 7 coact to provide inner and outer conduits or chambers 16v and 17 respectively, both of which open at the inner end into the fireboX, the outer end of the conduit 17 being closed by the ring 5, the outer end of the conduit 16 opening into the fit- "ing 9 and both conduits commi'n'iicating with each other by means of the openings 8. Thesaid tubes are so proportioned, that there is no possibility-of Icinde'rs and the like of such'size entering` the conduit 17 as would clog up the holes 8. f
In the operation of the device, with a steam jet being discharging fromthe` nozzle 12, into the outer end of the tube 7, a subatmospheric condition is established in the fitting 9 so that air rushes into the same from below, through the branch 11 to mix therewith and enter the outer end of the tube 7. In the passage of this mired air and steam throughy the tube under high velocity as induced` by the jet nozzle, it passes the openings 8, and an aspirating action is produced in the outer conduit 17 so that the products of conlbustion are drawn from the fireboX into said conduit. Said products of combustion then pass to the rear end of said conduit and through said holes 8 into the conduit 16 and mingle withthe already mixed air andy steam to produce' a combined high temperature mixture of air, steam and products of combustion that is discharged back into the iireboX from the inner end of the conduit 16 and which mixture promotes and completes combustion so as to insure an absence of a smoke discharge.
In the discharge of the mixturedescribed from the inner end of the conduit 16 into the firebox, a: vacuous annular zone is establishedy about the inlet end of the outer conduit, thus creating a suction draft for theproducts of combustion in entering said chamber tol completely' fill the same. All cinders that `are capable of entering the inlet end of this conduit are capable of passing out of the same through the holes or ports 8 toI enter the inner conduit for a discharge back into the fireboX so that the device at all times is self-cleaning.
Again, asthe conduit 17 is completely filled 'with products of combustion at high temperature, the tube 4 acts .to heat the water surrounding the same and said high temperature is also transmitted to the inner tube so that there' is no Cooling effect by the combined mixture to be discharged intov the lireboX, and upon the products of combustion therein, and there is no cooling effect imposed upon the water in the side water leg surrounding the tube 4. y
By the construction described, with respect to the jet nozzle 12, the same may be adjusted longitudinally to bring its discharge tip into that position' providing the best operation of the device for its intended purpose` While in describingthe-invention, I have referred in detail to the form, arrangement and constri'iction of the' various par-ts thereof, the same is to be considered merely isillustrative so that I do not wish to be limited thereto except as may be specifically set forth in the appended claims,
I claim as my invention :-l
1. In combination with the wall of a fire'- boX and means therein providing inner and outer conduits, both opening at their inner ends into the irebox and communicating with each other .near their outer ends and vone of said/conduits being closed at ysaid outer tioned conduit. Y

3. In combination with thev wall vof alfineboi; 'and means providing a conduit therein which opens at its inner end into thek lireboX, means closing the outer end of said conduit, a tube arranged in said conduit and opening at one end into said ireboX and supported in position near itsouter end by said closing means, said tube having'openings therein -near said closing means and establishing vcommunication between vsaid conduit and tube, means providing an air inlet communieating only with the outer end of said tube,
and a jet nozzle arranged to discharge axially into the outer end of said tube.
4. In combination with the wall of a lireboX and means providing a conduit thereinv whichopens at its inner end into the firebox, means closingvthe outer end of said conduit, a tube arranged in said conduit and opening at one end into said ireboX and supported in position near its outer end by said closing means, said tube having openings therein near said closing means and establishing communication between said conduit and tube, means providing an air inlet communieating only with the outer end of said tube beyond said closing means and a jet nozzle supported in said air inlet providing means and adapted to discharge into the outer end ol said tube.
5. In combination with the wall of a lirebox and means providing a conduit therein which opens at its inner end into the fireboX, means closing thev outer end of said conduit, a tube arranged in said conduit and opening at one end into the lrebox and supported in position near its outer end by said closing means, said tube having openings therein near said closing means and establishing commuifiication` between said conduit and tube, a member secured tothe outer end of Y said tube and having an air inletarranged at an angle to the axis of saidtube andcommunicating only with said outer end of said tube, and a j et nozzle supported in said memand steam arranged to discharge at one end into the lireboX, means associated with the other end of said tube for discharging air and steam thereinto, means yproviding a conduit surrounding' said tube and having its inlet end opening into the lireboi; and having its other end in communication with said tube near said `first mentioned means and out of communication with said air and steam discharge meanssaid tubeoperatingwhen air and steam aredischarged into its said other end to create an aspirating action on that end of the conduit in communication with said tube' and draw into said tube products of combustion for mixing with the air and steam and raising the temperature oi said air "firebox f7.
